Re: Items to include in boxes
If you right click on a diagram and select Diagram Options , then select the Text tab in the dialogue box you will see a whole range of predefined options, which you can edit or even create your own. You can see in the image I am using one I have customised which shows Birth, Marriage, Death and Occ...

Re: Change census date from Year to full date
Thank you all for your help, filtering on census records and using LUA pattern matching (which I was not familiar with) with ^1841 etc. did the trick perfectly. Only issue was with a few 1911 Canadian census records which were easily fixed.

Re: Change census date from Year to full date
I thought this would be a useful way of correcting incomplete census date entries where historically we have only entered the year. But as we now have 000s with the full date this doesn't help. See attached image. Is it possible to add to the search criteria "ignore 6th June 1841"?

As simple as that, and I was thinking there should be an Add New button, silly me!
Many thanks Mike for the prompt help.

Is it possible to add a new Source Type
I can see how to edit a Source Type, but not how to create a new Source Type, is this possible? I have tried searching for this but the forum search engine ignores the word Source and doesn't seem to allow phrases.

Re: The Theory of Eight
My eight are Wilkinson, Palmer, Bowtle Oakley, Gillingham, Boulter, Edwards and Payne.- two photos, one reliable the other possibly dodgy.
My wife's eight are Ransome, Hines, Butcher, Norman, Overett, Stevens, Simpson and Green - three photos all reliable

Re: Creating a website options
The spans put a nice dividing line in the menu bar in between each item (see image), so they are not redundant, they are also in fact the default that FH generates. I could use padding in the CCS file but just haven't bothered to do it.

Re: Creating a website options
In case it is any help I use Notepad++ to replace lines of html to tidy up my menu bar. As long as the following is done in order it works fine and only takes a few minutes for 1800+ files. I have to do each line replacement separately. Original <li><span><a href="index.html">Home</a></span></li> <l...

Re: Living "over the brush!"
I have had exactly this situation several times and I agree with Helen, enter as a spouse and set the marriage status to Never Married. When children have a temporary surname I record it as an alternative name with the census citation and include in the census text something like "unmarried son as J...

Re: What will we do with our research?
My father started our research and he asked me to look after it when he was failing, which I did and became hooked. My younger son has said he would like to look after it when I get too old, but as that is a bit off yet (hopefully) who knows? With respect to alternatives, I did wonder about giving i...

Re: Find My Past appears to have the new GRO Index
I too have noticed this and FMP is incomplete, I only record what is in the GRO entry as this is more likey to be accurate, but the FMP entry is helpful when searching as GRO indexing isn't 100% correct (but a fantastic free tool).

Re: I Quit FH for TMG
I too am of a higher age and came to FH from TMG . Whilst there are a few things that were better in TMG , such as a structured places and relational citations, I think FH offers much more and I have no intention of going back. I agree with everything that Gowermick says and endorse that perseveranc...

Re: Change map locator symbol
Mike, I agree with you, the cross at the center of the screen can be very difficult to see especially if the background map has a lot of detail. In addition it would be nice when FH auto- geocodes it places the marker in line the cross as well, it does when the co-ordinates are present, so why not a...

Re: Mapping Issue
I make extensive use of the mapping facility and find it gives mixed results. Sometimes it finds the place down to street level and close to the house number on occasions (that might just be luck though). On about 10% of occasions it is way off, sometimes in a completely different part of the countr...

Re: Advice Needed from TMG Users Who Switched to FH
Don, We are all free to choose what software we prefer. I used to think that nothing was better than TMG, which was the market leader in its day. FH isn't perfect, but no package is. I think a few statements in your last post are incorrect:- in FH you can create what ever Fact tags you require you h...

Re: Advice Needed from TMG Users Who Switched to FH
I switch from TMG nearly two years ago. Regarding your specific point about citations (and other reports options) FH is very flexible and I place my citations at the end of each person. It might be that in the trial version all the options possible are not present. I think overall FH is better than ...

Re: Is there a simple way to incorporate BMD data?
As you will find from reading around this forum there are many different ways of doing this. It is a matter of personal choice. My way is to use a 'lumped' source such as 'EW Birth Index 1837-2007' then record the date of data entry in the Entry Date field, set an Assessment , input the reference in...

Re: Apostrophes
I think this is a non-definitive subject as you will always find variations, even within official body documentation. Also, some place names have changed over time. For example the Isles of Scilly Registration District was called Scilly Islands until 1903 becoming Isles of Scilly thereafter. Persona...

Re: database engine
I migrated from TMG about 2 years ago and I think FH was the best choice. Whilst FH doesn't have a few features that TMG had, it has much more and I don't miss those features. You do have to get used a different way of working though, for example in TMG places/addresses are stored in a structured wa...

Re: harmonizing TMG9 tag types with FH6 fact types
I migrated from TMG about 28 months ago and made extensive use of "Change any Fact Tag", I ended up only having to manually 'redo'' a small number facts. The key of course is to take regular back ups during the process in case it goes horribly wrong. I have no regrets switching to FH , whilst it doe...

Re: Reducing the size of the source list in reports
Mike, My database goes back many years and contains many old citations that do not conform to my current standards, and I am slowly tidying them up. The duplicate 1901 census has now gone in this example and I do prefer lumping for things like census, birth index, death index records where you can c...

Re: Reducing the size of the source list in reports
I felt the same and I have reduced the settings to what I think is the minimum needed, see attached image. You need to be diligent to ensure a single reference used multiple times for a person/family are identical, if not you get multiple entries. I do this using the Copy Citation button. Enabling A...
