Re: How to add Nicknames & Suffix to the names in this view
You can add Nickname . Right click on the column headings, select Configure Columns and a popup will appear, go to the bottom of the list and select <Other...> a pop up will appear, give it a heading then use Insert Data Ref and find Nickname (or enter %INDI.NAME[1].NICK% as the expression). You can...

Re: Engaged couples
Adrian is quite right, it is down to personal choice, and as he says there are consequences. The only time I have entered such a thing is when there was an entry in the parish banns and marriage registers, which were then crossed out indicating that the marriage was planned, but did not happen and m...

Re: Family Historian Census Event for UK 1939 Register
If it helps, I use a generic sentence for all census facts and my construct is <para>{individual} appeared in the census taken on< {%FACT.DATE:DAY_OF_WEEK%}>< {date}>< at {_place}>< {age}><, {note}>. I don't use witnesses for census entries as I wish the note to be specific to that person, an exampl...

Re: GRO Death Index now upto 2017
Thank you, it is good to know the reason for this. Whilst these recent entries only have the year of birth it is very helpful to be able to identify a death up to earlier this year. One of the joys of family history research is using a variety of tools and piecing the evidence together.

Re: GRO Death Index now upto 2017
A surprise this morning, GROs updated index does not include 1958-1983, no idea why. Already found the most recent years useful though.

Re: GRO Death Index now upto 2017
FindMyPast has death records up to 2018, but they are not complete and seem to be newspaper or other extracts (Ancestry has similar). These are however very useful in that the actual date and place of death are given. FMP s actual death index records go up to 2007. I believe GRO stated sometime ago...

Re: GRO Death Index now upto 2017
You are quite right, deaths go up to quarter 2 2019 which is amazing. Births have been up to 1918 since GROs on-line index was introduced.

GRO Death Index now upto 2017
I don't know if it has been mentioned before, but I have just noticed that GRO's on line death index now goes up to 2017. This is a really helpful extension. It would be fantastic if they added to it every year from now on.

Help with birth place Evertondp'l
In the attached 1901 census entry the birth place appears to be Evertondp'l . I don't understand what this might mean. The 1891 census clearly says Everton for the mother which is what I have recorded, and Old Swan and Wavertree for the daughters. The 1911 census says Liverpool for all of them. If a...

Re: Query on occupations
I know that approach doesn't work for other things like census that have to have dates. For multiple occupations I record them in the single record such that it forms a reasonable sentence in reports, which is my ultimate aim. I think having multiple entries for occupations (also separate Residence ...

Re: Query on occupations
As a matter of interest I have chosen to avoid this complication for occupations by just having one undated Occupation Fact per individual e.g. "agricultural labourer then a yeoman". The dates for these entries will appear in the Fact note sentence that gave rise to them, e.g. census, marriage, bapt...

Pop-up boxes font size
I have had to increase screen font sizes as I am finding smaller fonts increasingly difficult to read. The only thing I cannot seem to adjust is the font size for pop-up boxes such as Edit Place Name, is this possible?

You can recover the download button by moving to the next, or previous image, then returning, and it works fine. Also, the number of items returned under each heading has gone. Chat seems to have gone as well, probably got fed up with complaints. I reported the major issue to them yesterday and FMP ...

I agree that nickname is the wrong choice, I would enter Sister Bernadette as an Alternative Name . I believe people should be recorded by their birth name then if the name changes that becomes an Alternative Name , I reserve Known As for such as "John George X" always appearing as "George X". Hope ...

Re: Occupation - Date
I think that what to record depends upon your objective. If you are transcribing, then exact replication is critical. But if you are interpreting to make sense or to 'make a story', then some flexibility is essential, which is down to personal choice.

Re: Occupation - Date
I am with Mike in that I standardise occupations wherever possible, but sometimes you can't and have to go with what the source documents say. There is no right or wrong way to record occupations, there is a 'best practice' but at the end of the day it is whatever suits your purpose. This applies to...

Re: Occupation - Date
My personal choice is to use the occupation fact without a date to record that they were an x, y then z, and record in the note associated with the event whatever it says on the source document. I think that gives a nice summary of a person at the beginning of a report and in diagrams, and keeps the...

Re: Family Fact - Residence
I don't bother with Residence Facts for census data etc. as the details of the address are contained within the census etc fact itself, it seems pointless duplication to me. Others may disagree though.

Re: National Library of Scotland Map Images
Mike,
Just had a look at this, a very helpful resource. Another free map service I use all the time is the OS old map service which can be found at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/. When you want to change places just click on the blue Old-Maps.co.uk on top left.

Re: 1939 Register
Out of interest I cite my 1939 register entries like "class:RG101 piece:6610B page:18 line:32 letter code:TVOJ". Ancestry I believe didn't access the originals, gaining their images from elsewhere, hence they were probably reliant on someone else's way of citing. There are several different examples...

Re: Advice about my own FT
I would also recommend one tree. FH can handle very large trees without difficulty. As has been said reports can produce sub-trees as required. I also think if you went the way of separate trees you will have many problems in the future and be unable to produce proper ancestor diagrams.

Re: ‘Information Fact’
"He experienced" is a general way FH reports when no sentence structure exists. I had this for several bespoke Facts when I imported from TMG. What you need to do is go to Tools->Fact Types->Information and amend the sentence template to say {note} if you just want your text to appear. Capture.JPG
