Re: Space saving
I concur that the largest space consumers in FH are images. Modern digital images, photos, scans etc. are often several Mb in size which enables them to be printed in a large format without loss of definition. For images in FH screens, diagrams, reports etc. you only need small images 0.1Mb or there...

Customising Data Entry
I do not seem to able to get more than two flags in a single row on the property window (see attached). Is it possible and is there a trick to this? Any suggestions would be welcome.

Re: Search and Replace Plugin
Mike,
That sounds the sort of solution I was looking for. I think an explicit warning would need to be visible about the potential consequences of repeat runs if you haven't taken a GEDCOM file backup first, which I always do as it takes seconds before using this plugin.

Search and Replace Plugin
I make extensive use of this very helpful plugin, particularly because I use a number of unique abbreviations to speed up data entry and convert them at the end of each month before I update my website. A couple of examples are v: = volume: mmn = mother's maiden name. A very useful enhancement would...

Re: Insert today's date
I use Entry Date to record the date I entered or last updated details about a Fact . This because the Updated date is not fixed until you next manually update something to do with that record. For example I use the plugin Format Dates in Sentences and in order for records to get any updates I make t...

Re: My Father in 1939 register
I think you should do as Lorna suggests and submit a copy of the death certificate. 1939 register entries are not automatically opened following a death, although FMP have been doing some. I have successfully had several records opened even with evidence other than a death certificate.

Re: Sentence construct dilemma
Mike, Thank you, I am aware of the different reports but it just struck me as odd that the Family Group presentation, which I prefer for the web site, didn't pick up linked witnesses. I understand why and will just have to live with it as I only produce a few narrative reports for specific purposes....

Sentence construct dilemma
I have just noticed a difference in how a sentence is displayed between a report and a web site created by FH . (I have a funny feeling I may have mentioned something similar before.) This is a marriage and the sentence template includes a bit about witness roles. Capture.jpg The text in the note fi...

Re: Who should you add to your tree?
I also went through this torment. We used to add everyone including possibles and found that our 'tree' was getting far too unwieldy and the maintenance overhead was too great. So I made a decision to cull ancestors of people who marry into the family i.e. not blood related (unless siblings marry in...

Re: fresh start (ish)
I am in the process of doing something similar and one thing I found very useful was to add a Flag which I called "Of Interest" and added this to the Individuals record view. I populate this using the All Relatives query for any branch(pool) I am interested in as I am collating data for a number of ...

Sentence for a still birth
I have used the Stillborn option on the Death Fact but I don't like the way it just adds aged Stillborn to the end of the sentence. I can't see a way of improving this sentence using the Fact Type editor. A steer would be most welcome in case I have missed something simple. Is the only option to cus...

Re: Duplicated Source Text in Ancestor Report Footnote
A cause of this can be as simple as one letter different, I note the top one has double quotes, the lower one doesn't. Whilst the source record may be unique, if there is a difference in the text in Where Within Source or Text From Source fields apparent duplication will happen.

I agree completely with Mike's points, but what works for you is important. To have the actual co-ordinates is unusual. Here are a few examples of how I have done this for "approximate locations".

Mike,
Many thanks, that is what I thought. I have on some occasions used the witness note field but as you say the limitations of Fact Witnesses precludes common usage.

Emigration Fact witness age
I have used the Emigration Fact with a witness as a fellow traveling companion, but in the witness's sentence the age is that of the principal, which is clearly wrong. The sentence picks up the principal persons name correctly though. This is the sentence construct. Capture.JPG and this is the sente...

Re: Relocating Census Image files

In order to save disk space I use the snip tool to...

For each report there is an option to specify the number of images to show under options for the root of the report, spouses and others.
Hope that helps.

Re: How to notate missing first name
I must confess that I enter unknown full names as Unknown /Surname/ or Firstname /Unknown/. This works well for me and enables easy output from queries and ordering in lists. I'm not aware on any downsides to this approach. Down to personal preference.

Re: TMG Import into FH 6.2.7
I moved from TMG to FH about four years ago now and never regretted it. The import was 99% perfect I just needed to use the PlugIns Change Any Fact Tag and Search and Replace for a few things, particularly bespoke Facts , and amending sentences to how I wanted them. The hardest part was getting my h...

Re: Use of Correct tense in Property box sentence for living person.
The flexibility to edit sentence templates in FH is pretty good and I have made changes to most to get them to read the way I prefer. Automatically generated sentences will have limitations and can appear repetitive. As the vast majority of people in a family history will be deceased, most things sh...

GRO web site birth index extended
Noticed this morning that the GROs web site birth index has some additional years available now, 1919 and 1984 to 2004. However, 1984-2004 doesn't include the mother's maiden name which makes it of less value. GRO are certainly improving their web site which is most welcome.

Re: Whole record source question

I also do this when someone else tells me something, an...
