Re: Getting The Most from Family Historian 6 now available
I just saw this book on Amazon - I see there was a flurry of interest here when it came out, I wondered if, now time has passed, people would recommend it to someone with some experience of FH but still only scraping the surface, or is FHUG enough for me to learn from?

Re: How to Enter Place Data for England?
A parish is the relevant smallest unit of place, with parishes being collected into hundreds (something to do with area I seem to remember) and hundreds make up a county. In general in the UK, a place is city/town/village , county, country, so Reading (where I live) is Reading, Bershire, England. In...

Re: Internal server error
I've seen that sort of error on hosted blogs when they crash and reboot for reasons known only to themselves, or when a cloud provider needs to flex capacity too quickly. If they go away I tend to put them down to serendipity

Re: Show Project Statistics question
So, it turns out the delete option from the menu doesn't work but if I use Fn + Delete on my keyboard it does the trick. I'll put that mostly down to user inability to use their Macbook keyboard, but also a confusing interface - there's no obvious way to (eg click right in the all tab) to delete an ...

Re: Show Project Statistics question
That's what I thought I'd tried and got the error message about nothing to delete! It's as though the focus hasn't moved into the property/ all tab. I'm using Wine on a Macbook, I'll try later under Windows 10 / Parallels / iMac.
I'm sure it's something really obvious I'm missing!

Re: Show Project Statistics question
Mike, I should have said I have read the help, looked on the All Tab and that's why I posted. When I select the item on the All Tab it has a Birth item and when I expand the + the exception is with the last line "Parents Family". When I select the line highlighted (Parents Family) and try delete fro...

Show Project Statistics question
So, while I've had FH for some years, I've only recently come back to my tree and started looking into plugins. I've run Show Project Statistics, and while I understand most of the reasons why records are identified, I get an error with the first dozen or so people in my tree: Event has Link to Pare...

Re: Advice needed with handling fields on importing
Thanks Mike. I have read a number of things on the site, but I'm one of those who needs to fiddle with software to get the hang of it, as well as just reading.

Re: Advice needed with handling fields on importing
I did, indeed use %s%s to match two white spaces! Coming from MS Word, I was used to %s just meaning the space character, so I originally tried to swap %s%s for %s!
I'm just beginning to scratch the surface of what FH can do under the hood, so expect lots of questions!

Re: Advice needed with handling fields on importing
I found I had a few dozen date fields in quotes from an old import and recently use the Search and Replace plugin to sort them out. I'm sure there's a clever way to do it, but I just did it in several simple stages. The hardest was converting double space to single space - I figured out %s meant any...

Re: How we are all descended from Royalty
I was given the Adam Rutherford book for Christmas; an interesting read but he does spend a lot of time debunking various myths. He seems very scathing of DNA tests for family history, and I got the impression he wasn't too impressed with genealogy at all. I suspect he is used to thinking in 10s of ...

Re: Upgrading FH to 6.2.3 on a MAC with wine
Thanks Tony, but exactly what Wine / Crossover / PlayOnMac /etc, configuration are you running on your Mac ? I've never heard of Crossover or Play on Mac. I installed last October by following the instructions on this forum and paid no attention beyond 'install wine and do x/y/z'. It worked first t...

Re: Upgrading FH to 6.2.3 on a MAC with wine
Tony, could you be more explicit than: " just ran the process inside the application ". What process and what application ? Please specify explicitly what commands and programs you used. Do you mean you ran an earlier version of the FH application program and used its Help > Check for Updates proce...

Re: Upgrading FH to 6.2.3 on a MAC with wine
I would be interested to find what @Tony did. I have a test version of FH under Wine and could not do the install from within the FH bottle with FH running. Doing the upgrade in Crossover works without issue. As somebody else said I just ran the process inside the application. As it happens my enti...

Re: Upgrading FH to 6.2.3 on a MAC with wine
I just saw this and thought I'd fire up my Mac version (I happen to have just upgraded my wine installation). I was on version 6.2.2; it asked about an upgrade, downloaded and installed. It all worked, no issues and I am now on 6.2.3. I think 6.2.2 was the first version I installed, following instru...

I currently used version 5 and have a lot of media added to my tree, pictures of ancestors and copies of certificates and dowload,s from other web pages such as Ancestry. I am thinking of upgrading to version 6.2, there has been upgrades to the media section how will 6.2 deal with my current media ...
