Re: Adopted Line in Focus Window and Reports
You need to manually change the order of the parent families in the All tab listing. Select a set of parents and use the up/down arrows at the top left of the tab to change the order. Aha! That is quite the hidden little trick! It took me a minute to figure out that the "All" tab was on the individ...

Adopted Line in Focus Window and Reports
I'm wondering if there's a way to display a person's adopted line, either instead of or in addition to their bloodline, in reports and application windows. I have several people in my family who are way more interested in the history of their adopted parents than their biological parents. I have bot...

Re: How To Get Nicknames To Show In Reports?
Thanks, Mike. I think I'll play around with the different options. I don't think I've ever used Given Name, that was more of just an example, so I could definitely live without that. I'm definitely more interested in the narrative reports. Your suggestion of a heading-only approach sounds interestin...

Re: How To Get Nicknames To Show In Reports?
Mike, Thanks so much for that thoroughly researched and detailed answer. I must say, that is A LOT of work to workaround a bug in the program. On one hand, I think manually putting in the nickname in the primary field is light-years easier. On the other hand, the organizer in me says nickname should...

Re: How To Get Nicknames To Show In Reports?
The regular fields offered in the FH Names & Titles dialogue are: Primary Name Name Prefix Name Suffix Nickname Given Name Used So, for my example, let's say I've populated those fields as: Primary Name Matilda Susan /Smith/ Name Prefix Dr. Name Suffix Jr. Nickname Tillie Given Name Used Jane Doe 1...

Re: How To Get Nicknames To Show In Reports?
But please report your problem to Calico Pie, as the more they get hopefully the sooner it will get fixed. I will go do that now. It seems like the reports where Nickname is displayed as a separate field (i.e. "Record Detail - Individuals" and "Individual Summary Report"), the nickname is displayed...

Re: How To Get Nicknames To Show In Reports?
Thanks everybody for the helpful tips. It sounds like the easiest (although least satisfying) way would be to simply include the nickname as part of the name field, e.g. Matilda "Tillie" Smith . I think that would reliably give me Matilda "Tillie" SMITH in all reports, all locations, with no other c...

How To Get Nicknames To Show In Reports?
I have a nickname for a person, but there doesn't seem to be any way for it to show up in reports. For example, I have a "Matilda Smith" and I've entered her nickname of "Tillie". But in the reports, instead of seeing the Matilda 'Tillie' SMITH I would expect, I simply get Matilda SMITH . No nicknam...

Auto-Highlight Bloodlines
Automatically highlight all people that are in the bloodline of the root person on all screens. The current blue down arrow highlights bloodlines on some screens, but is not consistently shown on all screens, and on the screen where it does display is only for the focus person down, and not for ance...

Re: Can I Show Bloodline in Focus Window / Lists?
Mike, Thanks for the detailed explanation! That really helps. I know other programs will highlight the bloodline in some fashion (different color, background, or something), and now I understand how FH is doing it, and it kind of makes sense. I agree that having an indicator on ALL bloodline people ...

Re: Can I Show Bloodline in Focus Window / Lists?
I see that, now. Part of the problem was that I had my wife as the root, so it was saying "Great(x9) grandfather of husband of..." After I made myself the root, then it showed the blue down arrow. But it doesn't seem to be universal. For example, the person I have as the focus in the "Spouses & Chil...

Can I Show Bloodline in Focus Window / Lists?
Just wondering if there's a way to identify people (different color font, bold, etc.) in the focus window and/or person list that are in the bloodline of the root person. Sometimes I find myself working on a list of children in the "Spouses & Children" window, and forget which one of the children is...

I could try the VirtualBox, although I do agree it sounds like a longshot.
So what about this... instead of FamilyHistorian, what if I installed AncestralSources and my FH GEDCOM file on the flash drive, and ran that?

Re: Exported OBJE records
BUT 5.5 does say: " Industry standards will emerge in this area ... " Yeah, that's the problem! :) Industry standards have emerged in this area (e.g. video), but GEDCOM hasn't . In practice most products seem to ignore that FORM tag restriction. Good thing, too. Option 1: Only support official GEDC...

Sorry, yes! Thanks for the info and links - very helpful.tatewise wrote:Did the cloud storage FH synch technique make sense?
Between the laptop idea, and using Google Drive for syncing, and understanding that a single GEDCOM file is the master source for FH, I feel like I have quite a few options now!

Re: Virus threat
Personally I keep all my licence codes etc in a spreadsheet which is in my Documents folder which is backed up all the time. That way I can just cut and paste as needed. I do that, too, and also email myself a copy of the info via Gmail. That way it's in the cloud as well - searchable, cut-and-past...

What makes you think Ancestry cannot be used at home? I use it at home. Sorry if that was confusing. Our library itself has a license to Ancestry, so it's free for patrons (I just found out about this recently). You log into the library website, and follow their provided links, and it redirects you...

Re: Exported OBJE records
I'd agree with your diagnosis - the messages all describe the 5.5.1 format in relation to OBJ - which is quite different to the 5.5 format. Update: I emailed Chronoplex tech support (makers of the GEDCOM validator I'm using) to ask why it seemed like 5.5.1 validation was being done on a 5.5 file. T...

Re: Exported OBJE records
Don't know what you mean by " PDF isn't a recognized format "? That per the GEDCOM 5.5 documentation, the only valid choices for multimedia format are the 7 items below. Even "jpg" isn't valid - you have to specify "jpeg" (with an "e"). FH and other programs seem to work just fine in spite of that,...

Re: Exported GEDCOM Auto-Update
No, FH does NOT do anything with with exported Gedcom files. It only operates on the one Gedcom within the .fh_data folder that has the Project filename. I'll double check later - that may have been the one I was looking at. So just for clarification (and sorry if this is a newbie question)... If I...

Re: Portable FamilyHistorian?
Many FH users simply have a cheap laptop/netbook to take out and about, that works in many other situations than libraries. Hmm. That's not a bad idea. I think I have a spare laptop or two lying about. I could take care of manually syncing data to my desktop, that's no problem. The biggest downside...

Re: Exported OBJE records
Probably not clear in my post, but I was just saying the 5.5 OBJE stuff seemed like a mess, not the entirety of GEDCOM (for example, the MULTIMEDIA_RECORD doesn't allow you to point to an external file via FILE, but the MULTIMEDIA_LINK does.... huh?). But since you bring it up.... yeah. I suppose GE...
