Re: Family Historian user perspective of the data structure - evidence and assertions
Hello, I must admit that I am not the best person to answer your query as for most of your post I did not follow what you were asking and in no way do I use all the technical tools within FH but from trying to understand it I have a couple of comments (Mike will put me right if I am in error) Everyo...

Re: Is FH As Good As We Think
I have had FH since it first came out so not really had experience of other programs but I am sure that they must have groups like ours to help users. If they don't then the users are left high and dry because there will always be people of a wide range of technical ability from those who have troub...

Re: Really Useful Show
Helen, At the moment I have downloaded the handout from Amelia Bennett's talk, "Hidden in Plain Sight". I haven't actually looked at it yet but her talk was very good. The talk on the Scottish maps site was helpful and really enjoyed Helen Tovey's talk "Mission Creep" an interesting way to get peopl...

Really Useful Show
Spent the day at the show. Actually just about managed the technology but anyone who wasn't really familiar with using the current communicating systems I think would really have struggled. There are lots of complaints on Midland Ancestors about not being able to access both the FFHS site and not ge...

Histpop
Good morning, In the past I have used the very informative site www.histpop.org but just recently it has let me in to the first page but when I try and search it says "the site is busy try again later". At first I thought it was just that particular time but this has been going on for quite some tim...

There are examples in the parish registers of very old men marrying young women and having children in their 70s.

Re: Occupation and Multiple references
Hi My suggestion would be to put your sources into categories, say newspapers/posters etc and preface the category with say letter A - then B etc. This would put your sources into order in your source list. Then for each record in the category give it a reference number say year, group he was in, pl...

Re: New Ancestry longest segment
Hi Helen I know Ancestry had said that the fact there may be a longer largest segment than the total match because of residual DNA but I hadn't connected that they have worked out the longest segment before the TIMBER algorithm - thank you. However the fact that every shared match contains exactly t...

New Ancestry longest segment
Hi I would appreciate members' thoughts on my Ancestry match. I logged on to Ancestry to look at the new longest match tool. Eventually, after searching, found it. Thought very interesting and could be helpful. At the same time I discovered a new quite high match - interesting. I emailed but par for...

Re: Ancestry Changes
Adrian Not sure if I am following you about DNA that you do not share with parents. On the DNA courses I have done it has been highlighted in capital letters that you cannot inherit DNA which your parents did not have. Those odd bits and pieces are what in simple terms they put down to DNA residual ...

I haven't found any "jiggery pokery" in our line and I have researched it very thoroughly. Our match is just within the 1st cousin range but at the highest part. It is the randomness of recombination that can throw a spanner in the works1

For information regarding statistics on DNA https://isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_statistics. When you get further back the amount on average of DNA shared with say 3xgt grand parents is 3.125%, 4x gt grandparents 1.563% and 5xgt grand parents 0.781% What you share on average with cousins: 1st = 850c...

Re: Ancestry Changes
Hi Evelyn (I think) According to Peter Calver from Lost Cousins the date of the Ancestry change has been moved to the end of August. This will give you time to either add low matches to a group, add a note or contact the match. A quick way to add the low matches might be to look at your main names. ...

Ancestry Changes
Hi From the Lost Cousins' newsletter, next month Ancestry are updating their DNA matches. This will lead to matches less than 8cms being lost. Matches at this level are not usually used in isolation as they can give false matches but if they appear in a group could help indicate a line of inquiry. I...

If the parents were regular adopters a children's society may have turned to them for help.
The address for the webinar on Aug 5th is https://familytr.ee/leonard It is about using DNA but it may give you ideas.

Re: Finding Adopted Children
Peter There are a myriad of problems when researching someone who was adopted. First how soon after birth was she "adopted"? - Reason, legal adoption did not come in until 1927. In the unofficial adoptions prior to this if the baby was adopted immediately after birth the name may have been changed f...

Re: Private Trees
Hi Some people have private trees because they are experimenting with "quick and dirty trees" to find where ancestors fit into different families (often to do with DNA matches). These trees are not necessarily accurate and so they do not want other people to see them. There are 2 ways of making tree...
