Possible conflict in research
Hello, Some time ago I contacted a gentleman who had my gggrandfather in his tree. This week he got back and told me to look at his tree to answer my questions. I looked. The birth, 1841, 1851, marriage 1860, 1861 census and birth of my ggrandmother, Mary, were the same. All well and good. All his r...

When looking at censuses and certificates don't dismiss witnesses, informants etc they may lead you to a proof that you are seeking. I had a rather far fetched theory about my great grandmother. In 1891 she was listed as having son born in 1881. She was not married until 5 years later and there was ...

Re: Project disappeared
Hi Don't know if the Windows Updates apply to everybody or just individuals depending on how long they have been using Windows 10 but a couple of days ago my computer had a major automatic Windows update. Insignificant to what has happened but I had notes on my desk top and they disappeared. Mysteri...

Re: Banns
Helen, I have a record exactly the same with the banns recorded and the marriage with witnesses on the same form. Date was 1807. Sorry spent 2 hours trying to add screen shot but being useless couldn't do it, but it is the same type of entry as Adrian's. Ann

I have received a message from Birmingham and Midland Fam Hist Soc. to say that there is a talk about the above event in Newcastle under Lyme. There was a large loss of life. There is lottery funding to digitize a map of houses of the dead and create a data base. It is at The Brampton Museum at 2.30...

Re: Banns
Hi, as I have said before I am not technical. When I find a Banns record I save it with it's own code, similarly for the licence and marriage. The images also have their own codes. I have a slight difficulty as has been suggested I have one document in Staffordshire Banns collection (not marriages a...

Re: 18th of Light Dragoon Guards
Thank you Jane. Already I am getting a clearer picture of what happened to my ancestor. I am really grateful to everyone for the help. To add to my questions, were there any records of births for army personal families?

18th of Light Dragoon Guards
Hello, I hope it is ok but actually this is not directly concerned with FH. When I registered with Find My Past and started using the hints I found a link to Staffordshire banns and think I discovered why one of my ancestors is listed in 3 census returns as "born in France, British Subject". This ha...

Re: Recording a Certificate with incorrect information
Elaine, just a thought, having Elizabeth and Eliza in the same family is not unusual, I have several instances. Also instances such as Mary Elizabeth and Ann Elizabeth. They probably had ancestors with both names or they just liked them!

Hi Mike, I hadn't actually considered the plug ins. It is certainly a good idea, the only thing is, with some people I have the event say from England and Wales Collection or some other source or index, from Ancestry or Freebmd, but on FMP I am able to get the image of the register so would the plug...

Hi, it is not such a problem having to click again if you are just dealing with one person but I am trying to download all the relevant birth, marriage, death and 1939 images for everyone in my project. I can get the censuses from Ancestry but I will probably only keep the FMP for the one year. So f...

Hi Lorna, I was also looking on the forum a couple of days ago and wondered why there weren't any posts I hadn't read. When I tried to reply I realized I had to sign in. I hadn't realized I wasn't logged in. Don't know why this happened as I am on usually twice a day. The only think was there was a ...

Thank you both for your advice. I will check out everything you recommend. I emailed FMP about constantly having to sign in and all they said was 'don't sign out' which I don't do anyway. I don't have the problem with Ancestry. Ann

Hints
Hi, not sure if it is my computer or FMP. When I click on the hints sometimes they appear perfectly clearly, sometimes they are partially greyed out and at others all I can see are the box outlines and the text is unreadable. If I return to the person and try again they often come up clearly. Also o...

Re: One Name Studies
PS, Just thinking about Custodian and allocating ids and One Name Study; if you have a parish register for example with several instances of a name, you don't necessarily know which family they belong to so you can't allocate a family id so you still have lots of instances of a name. In FH you can a...

Re: One Name Studies
Hello, I don't have a one name study but I also use Custodian 4. I must admit I only use it infrequently as it takes me all my time to get my head round FH! Custodian requires 2 different ids one to be allocated to individuals and one to families so that individuals can be allocated to the correct f...

Re: Pc and Mac
Dear Mike as usual thank you for your detailed options. I like the idea of being able to use FH. Will study the options and consult Gwil. He is pretty good with computers as he uses a program called Sibelius for his composing and I think that is fairly complex. Thanks again. Ann

Hi, our son, Gwilym, is a busy musician so doesn't have time to do family history research but he is always interested in my researches. Gwil uses an Apple laptop and I use a Windows one. Re: Entering Media for citations
Hi, I'm probably not helping as I'm not technical with where things end up in the workings of a program but the way I am able to find any census fairly easily is to assign my own file name. 1841 censuses start 'X4 (Name of head of household) census 1841, Christian name'. 1851' X5 (as before)', 1861 ...
