Showing census information

One of the things I am very keen on is following my families through the censuses. I can do this very easily in my paper files as at the bottom of each individual sheet is a list of all the people who appear with the individual in given censuses, with the address and reference of course. Those who o...

Re: Ancestry search hints

Thanks for the explanation. I got the wrong end of the stick and thought a "shaking" leaf was something else as well as the hint leaf. Thanks Ann

Re: Potential user

Hi, I agree with Ann, I have had FH since it first came out. I am not technologically competent and because of the flexibility of the progam I am able to use it at a basic level and as I also have paper files I am quite content. Like you some of the posts are way above my head but any problems you h...

Re: Sorting Source Citations

Hi, Not sure I am following what you want but when I assign a name to the file I use a set title eg. The 1841 census for Cain Mayer would be " x4 Mayer census 1841 Cain", for 1851 "x5 Mayer census 1851 Cain" and so on 1901, 1911 and 1939 get a y01 etc. In this way all the 1841 census entries appear ...

Re: Using the media folder

Hi I have categories for my media, including census images and birth marriage death, parish registers etc. I assign a short code at the beginning of the file name and then the images can be easily located, For example a 1841 census entry would be x4 Mayer 1841 Cain. The x puts the census images at t...

Re: To enter or not to enter

I did have a notion for people who work with diagrams which they could possibly use. I will possibly try it, I work with diagrams a lot on paper, although I don't work with diagrams on the computer much, as by the time I get it far enough reduced the names are illegible and I don't like the wizzing ...

Re: To enter or not to enter

Hi
Thank you all for your thoughts. I will check the link Mike gave and experiment with the type of tentative information I wish to enter. Ideally I would like to enter it in say red and at a glance I can see if I am building on "rock" or "sand".
Thanks again, Ann

To enter or not to enter

Hi, I have been researching for 20 years. By now on several branches I am beyond 1837. For this era sources and proofs become thinner on the ground. I run FH along side my paper files. I have only ever had FH since it's early days. When I was certain (as one can be!) of my facts I enter them into FH...

Re: Death certificate

This discussion just shows that you can use FH at your own level. When I started this thread I just wanted the information that A had been the person to report the death of B. Also I wanted the death cert image to appear on both person's record as that was where they were mentioned. The informant is...

Re: Usability of FH with/without the Book

I too have only ever had FH. I purchased it when it first came out. I read about it then but after that I have experimented. I did take a couple of years off when I was not well and it did seem to get a bit more complex. I have the current book, however, I still experiment as I might look up somethi...

Death certificate

Hello, I am wondering if I am entering something incorrectly or is it meant to be. I am entering death certificates via AS. I fill in the details for the informant usually as a family member and add the image, save and go back to FH. When I look at the details for the informant on the date of the de...

Re: Research Advice for a Newbie

Hi, Hopefully this will appear today! My ideas for starting out: Commercial sites; they allow you to post your tree and to view some others. Beware, because they are on line they are not necessarily correct. Carefully check their sources, they are often other member's trees (this just perpetuates mi...

It is also very satisfying when things are not working or when you find people on Ancestry who have attributed your relatives to the wrong people without any proof!
