Re: English language across the pond
OK, please tell me why the Brits pronounce "Worcester" like the way we in the State of Ohio, USA, spell the city located in this state: "Wooster"? I always tell folks from Massachusetts that use the British spelling that by the time the settlers got to Ohio they were more into phonetic spelling. We...

Re: Ancestry.com integration
I can see how Denebaud might well have been pronounced Denbow. The latter part of the name has a Norman/French look to it, where the -aud would give you the 'oh' sound like, for example, 'chaud' (meaning 'hot', pronounced 'show'). Den[n]e would be consistentent with Middle English spelling. There ca...

Indeed, the amazon courier chap delivered my copy not half an hour ago.
For anyone wondering, the book is A4 size and 243 pages long (238 excluding the index).

Artefacts as sources
I have uncovered an old family bible containing BMD events, and need to create a source for it in FH. Clearly, the publication details for the bible are essesntially irrelevant – it needs to be treated as an artefact instead (you couldn't go and find any copy of this bible for the information it con...

Re: Transferring data from a CD
Your old computer is dead, but the data on it may not be irrretrievably lost provided the hard drive itself isn't damaged. Take the hard drive out of your old computer and stick it inside an enclosure/caddy. You can get one for around £10, maybe less if you shop around (something like this http://ww...

Re: Americanisms
The original spelling was -ize (something to do with the etymology being Greek rather than Latin), but the idea of a "correct" spelling was always a little more fluid until the later 1600s and -ise was a frequent alternative (a quick glance through parish baptismal registers shows that). Consequentl...

Re: Exclude citations from reports unless assessed as Primar
Ah - the output you see there isn't pure FH as I had further saved the report to PDF, which I then edited in Acrobat in the way I usually do to give myself a better idea of my final result, which is when a little of your capitalisation was changed out of personal preference. (I also dropped the foot...

Re: Exclude citations from reports unless assessed as Primar
Seems to work well, Mike. Even reporting just the four births and one marriage of a small family it has managed to tidy things up nicely, almost halving the number of references. By the time I run it on my main file it will probably eliminate three or four pages of superfluous footnotes. Before.JPG ...

Re: Exclude citations from reports unless assessed as Primar
I'll a play around with that and see how we go.
Is the plugin case sensitive - do I need to take care to match the capitalisation in the note precisely?

Re: Exclude citations from reports unless assessed as Primar
The advantage of this technique is that you don't have to change any Citations or their Assessments or their order if you don't wish to. All you need to do is add the text "Exclude from Reports" in the Note field of the few Citations to be excluded from Reports. Mike, that sounds like a good idea. ...

Re: Exclude citations from reports unless assessed as Primar
a given citation might be the "primary" one for some Facts/Individuals, but only "secondary" for other Facts/Individuals You're right that that distinction does need to be made. However a citation is the bridge linking one fact to one source, so that problem doesn't arise. My original problem was t...

Re: Exclude citations from reports unless assessed as Primar
Yes, there has been a little mission creep. And people wonder why government projects run past deadline and over budget! I see where you are going with your idea about matching the first and equally assessed subsequent citations. That might be a neat little trick. Thinking of the three or four thous...

[edited] Hi Mike, I wasn't aware the empty field would be deleted when the project was next opened - I didn't think to check for that. You learn something every day! You were working on the correct basis - you created what I had imagined. When I 'discovered' (as I wrongly thought) that the assessmen...

Exclude citations from reports unless assessed as Primary
Would anyone be willing to write a plugin to achieve the following? Unfortunately, I cannot code. I would like to use the citation assessment field (which I otherwise do not use) to mark which citations should appear in reports and which should not. This is in order to limit the number of citations ...

Re: Floundering in a flood of footnotes
That sounds like a great idea. I don't actually use the citation assessment feature myself, so being able to repurpose it to earmark which citations I want to appear in reports would be marvellous. If I were to bat my eyelids sweetly, would someone with the requisite know-how be willing to write suc...

Floundering in a flood of footnotes
For some events, there can be a preponderence of sources. For example, someone's birth date might be evidenced by a birth certificate, and by the ages recorded on their marriage certifcate(s), death certificate, burial record, half a dozen census returns... and so on. Now, of course, I want to retai...

Software MacKiev FTM: Changes to FTM Gedcom
Sofware MacKiev, the company who now own and develop FTM, have made some changes to the FTM Gedcom output that may (?) affect some of the plugins that have been written to import data from FTM to FH. A beta tester has published details at http://www.tamurajones.net/Ancestry.comAndSoftwareMacKievFami...
