Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
May I add my tuppence worth as a long time genealogist. (my, English equivalent of US phrase 2 cents worth  ) I have used many genealogical programmes over the years and find they fall into two distinct categories. 1. Easy to use, but inflexible, I think Family Tree Maker falls into this catego...

Re: Question re name displayed in Individual record
I think the extra comma between Mary and Ann is causing your problem. Looking at others in your list with two forenames, you don’t use a Comma! Try /Abbott/ Mary Ann, FH recognizes that the two //‘s enclose the sirname. For example if I know Peter Baker’s wife is Mary, but don’t know her maiden name...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
One thing that could be useful, and not a burden to moderators, is for a post to have [ Solved ] added to the original topic/ subject line when appropriate, with perhaps OP editing the original post to append the solution to it. Some threads become very long, and to spot the one contaning the soluti...

Re: Map Window - List Pane : meaning of the coloured check boxes
Some check boxes in the attached screen shot are coloured orange. Does anyone know why this is, I an find nothing in the help. Thank you Screenshot 2023-04-24 214514.jpg David, May I make a suggestion. If you put house number AFTER street name, you’ll find they sort much better, so both Pine Street...

Re: Suffolk and Huntingdonshire Parish Register Images
Helen, Nice to hear, look forward to looking through them, especially Stilton. I have a CD of their transcriptions, but need to see them with my own eyes, trusting soul thet I am :D I am currently researching throughout Devon, and the amount of registers available on FMP is a refreshing change. Next...

Suffolk and Huntingdonshire Parish Register Images
Suffolk and Huntingdonshire seem to be in a black hole when it comes to viewing Parish Register Images.
Can anyone recommend a site that has these images?
Stilton and Sudbury in particular.

Re: Chart Query. Why are apparently the same relationships shown differently in a Diagram?
The simple answer is that there is not enough room to show unidentified 2 and child 2 on the same line as Kenneth and Angela’s marriage, so FH duplicated the marriage on to the row below, and added the dotted line to show it has duplicated the marriage, so it had room to add unidentied 2 and child 2...

Re: Source & media naming
I use a system similar to laz_gen, but I differ in that I give everyone a unique Custom ID , which I then use to prefix all specific individual media files. ( NB Custom ID is stable and safe to use) Like J0256ab Christening of Fred Bloggs , or J0256ab service record for Fred Bloggs 1 of 6 . NB I thi...

Eh? I use google maps as a gazeteer all the time, and apart from logging in to my account, I don't have to subscribe or pay.
And as far as I'm aware I have never given it my credit card details - I'd draw the line at that!

Re: Having an issue getting full place name during Geocoding
Gary, Another way to apply geo-coding manually is via the map window. If you want to geo-code a new place or correct a wrongly geo-coded place, find the correct place location on the map (expanding map gives greater accuracy), find the place in the lisst of placenames to the left of the map, and sim...

Re: Having an issue getting full place name during Geocoding
Gary,
I don’t understand your comment that FH7 offers a choice of alternatives for a place name when geo-coding. Are you confusing this with the auto-complete function when adding a place against a fact, which has nothing to do with geo-coding.

Re: Having an issue getting full place name during Geocoding
As far as I’m aware, geo-coding simply adds the Lat & Long to a place record.
So if I have a place simply called “Machester, England”, I wouldn’t expect it to amend it to add the missing county, and to be honest, I wouln’t want it to.

Re: Travel
it would be nice if GEDCOM had a simple place or location fact with associated date, Like the Residence fact? Although you would still need to decide how long stopping in one place qualified as a residence. No, as you say, that implies they were ‘living’ there for a period. I was thinking more abou...

Re: Travel
Lorna & Helen I tend to keep it simple, and add notes when necessary. I really can't see point of adding more and more new fact types to cover specific situations, when existing facts seem to cover most situation quite well, albeit with a bit of imagination and tongue in cheek. Perhaps it would be n...

Re: Travel
Is this really necessary? The only way to get from A to B is to travel! I simply use a residence fact for each place visited, knowing the individual must have travelled from last residence to get there😀 For example, my dad travelled from Nigeria, via the Med, Suez canal and Aden, to get to India dur...

Re: Does one use multiple sources for same event?
Helen, I think we are talking at cross purposes. Of course I transcribe the images and add the relevant details into FH. What I no longer do is add another source that references another transcription from anywhere else! i.e. if I get a burial image, I delete the source that tells me I also found th...

Re: Does one use multiple sources for same event?
Helen, I was really talking about images and their transcriptions, which shouldn't contradict each other, but if they do, then image is deemed to be true and Transcription wrong (which I tend to report to relevant site). i.e why keep an Image and a transcription of the same image? I refer my learne...

Re: Does one use muktiple sources for same event?
I keep the GRO marriage index citation, as it is a separate source. (Listed in chronological order of event...

Re: Does one use muktiple sources for same event?
Nick, I just use generic sources, and don't actually cite/copy what is in the transcription into the source, simply that it exists in the specific dataset. As for the image, once the details have been copied into FH for the individual (from image or transcription), I rarely need to go back to view i...

Does one use multiple sources for same event?
I’ve been tidying up my research, and realised that if I have the actual image of the Parish Register entry for a Baptism, Marriage or Burial,, the other transcription sources for the event/fact are redundant, and not really required. I’m quite happy to quote these multiple sources if they are only ...

Re: Favourite Repositories
John, If you view them in the records window, you can sort them on any column. Then when you want one, they should be in the order you sorted them on, just like sources. For example I sort my sources in the order I use most often, then when I want one, the most likely candidates are always at the to...
