Re: Another Findmypast 1921 census discount
One thing that I found different and extremely useful with this census, is that if you have Irish ancestors, their place of birth is more specific. Up until 1911 census, my great grandmother’s birthplace varied between Ireland and Cork, Ireland. The 1921 census narrowed it down to Skibbereen Parish,...

Re: Media insert failed
Could it be you already have the file in your media? Also it strikes me that the part of the file name beginning with GBPRS etc, may be the name of the file actually downloaded from whatever website you got it from. To my mind, saving this detail may be a waste of your time, as it doesn’t allow for ...

Simon,
Thanks for that. IPressing a key doesn't close it immediately, but waits until file has loaded - good enough.
All I now need is for property box to float on opening as it is set up to do!

Re: Hide Startup Banner
Any updates on this? Now that I've got a new superfast PC, the wait for the flash screen to disappear before I can begin work is getting annoying. I want the proerty box to float on opening FH, something it fails to do, so I have to set it to Docked on opening, but then find I can't click the 'float...

Re: Step Son showing in Descendants
Miketate, It is an easy trap to fall into. and often occurs when you add children from censuses, not realising the father has married again between censuses, so some children end up hanging from wrong parents. Post 1837 it pays to check GRO entries for every child to confirm correct parents have bee...

Re: Privatise or Remove certain Media links from Gedcom Export
Whilst I understand your caution, I think that there are no copyright restrictions on certificates issued by GRO. 1. There is certainly no copyright markings on any of the certificates I own 2. I have seen lots of such certificate images in Ancestry trees. 3. Providing a copy of a certificate is oft...

Re: Relationship expression for a query
I think you have an error in your syntax. I just created a simple query as follows Col1: %INDI% Col2: =Relationship(Record(1,"I"),,TEXT,1) If 1 is the normal record ID of your root, this will always produces a list of individuals and their relationship to your 'real' root, regardless of you changing...

Re: Perhaps an Event with 2 date fields (plotting immigration)
Miketate, I am truly astonished that excel still uses such an antiquated system for dates.
Like Mark, I use Libreoffice, (anything but Microsoft
) which doesn’t suffer the same problem, so I had assumed wrongly that the latest excel used a similar system - my mistake

Re: Perhaps an Event with 2 date fields (plotting immigration)
Be aware that many general software applications, including Excel, do not deal with dates earlier than the 20th century very well, but if you are only plotting years, that is not a constaint. Mark, I think that only applies if you use YY format instead of YYYY. If you put full year in, there should...

Re: source template error message
I don't think that's the case here, Mike L. The error message says: Citation field code not valid in this context. FH clearly know the context (because otherwise how would it know?) and what's gone wrong, so could say: Citation field code not valid in Bibliography. That’s assuming they knew how the...

Re: source template error message
It would be nice if that was the error message generated, rather than one that just says (and I'm paraphrasing) "you're doing something wrong, but we won't tell you what". So many software packages do this, leaving the user to figure it out for themselves, or, in this case, ask for help on this for...

Re: Source Citation: Text from Source vs. Notes
Bev, I agree with ColeValleyGirl, but don’t get hung up on ‘doing the right thing’. At the end of the day, a source is merely the evidence you used to arrive at a particular conclusion. I.e. Q Why did you think he was baptised at a certain place at a certain time. A from the parish register image of...

Re: Order of 'existing sources'
Whatever the last sort order is used for sources in the Records Window, is the order they will be presented to the user when adding an existing source. Also, remember each source record is given an ID when created, so the most recent will have the highest ID, so sorting by ID in descending order, wi...

Re: Search and Replace setting to change custom ID text
Thanks Mike, it worked a treat. It prompted me to sort out my files, many of which also contained the custom ID as an identifier within the file name. I went back to good old MS-DOS, and used a similar technique using the REN(ame) command in the command line window i.e. REN T*.* J*.* It had been on ...

Re: Search and Replace setting to change custom ID text
Got it!
My mistake! i was searching for T%d+, and writing J%1, which gave TJxxxx, when i wanted Jxxxxx.
I realised I should have been searching for T(%d+), which then gave me Jxxxxx, just what I wanted!
Thanks for the plugin Mike

Re: Search and Replace setting to change custom ID text
Miketate, Thanks, my eyesight must be getting bad, I didn’t even spot that option. That worked, and I can now find all those with the T , but as I’m not too sure how LUA patterns work, what do I set the replace field to, so that the whole of the ID is copied with just the T being replace with...

Search and Replace setting to change custom ID text
My custom ID's are in the form 1. Prefix letter T or J 2. 5 Digit number (padded with leading 0's 3. Followed by an indeterminate number of lower case letters e.g T00245abcd or J00347 In an attempt to standardise them, the first step is to change all appropriate prefixes from a T to a J. I set scope...

Size of text in forum has increased
Whilst viewing the forum, I must have inadvertantly pressed a key or keys on my keyboard, which caused the size of the text on the page to increase.
What did I do? Is there any way to restore it to normal?

Re: A plea for Updated V7 Video Tutorials Please please…please
I agree with Adrian on the Lumper/Splitter mixing argument. I am a splitter when it comes to Census and GRO, where I have a source for each Census Image, and a source for each GRO Reference (B, M & D). However, when it comes to parish register entries for Baptism marriages and Burials I am a Lumper,...

Sounds very much like a programme restiction, (512 being an exact multiple of 2.)
I suggest you raise it with Calico, perhaps they can explain why and perhaps even extend the limit.

When you go to register your new copy, calico will spot your attempt to register a 3rd copy and list your existing copies and ask you which one you wish to delete. Hopefully you’ll recognise which one will need deleting😀 Quite simple really Sorry, I didn’t read your post in full. However if you dele...
