Re: How can I perform bulk changes on source citations
Mike, Sorry, remiss of me not to reply sooner. Yes indeed it did work very well, and I have been busy using it to tidy my GRO references! Originally I had them all under a single GRO source, but wanted to break them down into manageable sizes, by splitting them into three (GRO B, GRO M and GRO D). Y...

Re: Using a laptop or notebook for Family Historian
For what it's worth, I have contacted FFHS, producers of the Burial CD, and whilst they recognised the problem with CDless laptops, they couldn't offer any way round it. They are currently looking at ways to overcome the problem for their next update, without jeopardising the security aspects of the...

Re: How can I perform bulk changes on source citations
Mike, Many thanks, I'll give it a look when I boot my PC. As for the 'entry date' and 'assessement', the answer is no at present, but to make it more generic, perhaps they ought to be catered for. I'll leave it up to you. What IDE / editor do you use for coding? I found Geany can read lua code, and ...

Re: How can I perform bulk changes on source citations
You are correct in your assumption, the 'where within source' field contains the phrase "Probate Calendar" somewhere within the field, which may contain additional text! I think it would make the plugin more useful/universal if the user was given the option to delete certain fields, rather than dele...

Re: How can I perform bulk changes on source citations
Mike, In this case, there is nothing of significance in the source, literally the title Ancestry and 'where within source' containing "National Probate Calendar......" so can safely be deleted. Doing it manually, I replaced the link to Ancestry[6] with Probate[42], then deleted all the subsidiary fi...

Re: Using a laptop or notebook for Family Historian
I should point out that one piece of software I know you can't install this way, however, is the National Burial Index! As part of a piracy protection scheme, the program checks for presence of CD in CD Drive on startup. Without CD, program won't run. (FFHS, the authors, are looking at ways to overc...

Re: Using a laptop or notebook for Family Historian
Genie15, I have a similar setup and needed to install FH6 on a similar CD less laptop. I can't remember how I installed it exactly, but 1 of 2 methods were used successfully: 1. Access your PC's CD drive over a network, and install it remotely from there. Obviously it can't be autorun, but if you lo...

Re: How can I perform bulk changes on source citations
Mike, A plugin could work if one assumes the new Citation contains all necessary data, and nothing needs carrying over from old citation. The old citation is known (Ancestry[6]), and the ones needed to be changed to new citation (Probate[42]), all have same text in 'where within source'. In pseudo c...

Re: How can I perform bulk changes on source citations
Mike, Sorry, you have it the wrong way round. Ancestry[6] is used as the source for around 1200 citations, and I wish to change only some of these citations to the new Probate[12] Source, leaving Ancestry[6] for the remainder. I know I can change these manually, by right clicking the source, Ancestr...

How can I perform bulk changes on source citations
I have multiple uses of a citation:-
Ancestry[6] "England & Wales, National Probate Calendar".
I have created a new citation Probate Register[42] and wish to use this to replace the above citations.
Is there a way to do this in bulk?

Re: Listing/Editing Citations for a Source
Jim & Mike, Thanks, your suggestions did provide a solution of sorts. One can't edit the citation directly from the resultset, but I can live with that! NB FTM does do some things useful - when working with sources, clicking on a source automatically opens a list of citations, and with a right click...

Listing/Editing Citations for a Source
Is there any way I can get an 'Editable' list of citations associated with a particular source? I was thinking along the lines Tools/Working with Data/Addresses, where one can see all the Addresses and can edit/merge them as required. I wish to do the similar thing with Citations, as over the years ...

Re: UDFs from FTM Import
Mike,
Thanks for that. I knew they must have been imported somewhere, just couldn't see where.
As the data that is 'unknown' is important, I won't be going down the bulk deletion path, but will be correcting and deleting them as I go.
Thanks

UDFs from FTM Import
I have only just started using FH and slowly getting to grips with its excellent features. Exploring a newly generated UDF report, it seems most of the problems involve the use of CONC fields associated with SOUR data e.g. In FTM12, my citation detail: reads " London Metropolitan Archives, Saint Joh...

Re: Version 6 tutorials
Annibeth, I too have recently moved to FH (2 weeks ago) after 6 or 7 years using Family Tree Maker, and must admit FH does things differently and seemed strange at first. However, after browsing 'Getting the most from Family Historian 5', I found it most informative and an excellent introduction and...

Re: Addresses - Suggestion for Best Practice
Mike, Following on from my last post, I have come to the conclusion that entering the house number/ name is best done in separate columns/fields as you suggest. That way, it gives you more options when working with the address data. To sum up, to keep things consistent, I have decided (my) best prac...

Re: Addresses - Suggestion for Best Practice
Mike, I realise one can view the columns in any order as you say, but I was more concerned on the inputting side of things, and making best use of the predictive text feature. I feel it is more useful whilst inputting new addresses, to discover that the street already has potential relatives living ...

Re: Addresses - Suggestion for Best Practice
Steviesteve, The length of the street name is immaterial, you will have same problem whether street name is long or short. The question is whether to have 'House Number/Name' before or after street name! My proposal means you get to the meat of the address (street name) quicker if you place it befor...

Addresses - Suggestion for Best Practice
When one addresses a letter in UK (other places differ) it is usual to use 'House Name/Number' followed by Street, followed by Placename. This works well for the postman but not necessarily for us when entering them into FH. If I wanted to enter '39 Zanzibar Street' as an address, predictive text st...

Re: Changing place names
Mike, Perhaps I'm being picky, but when you open a context window (by right clicking), one of the more common Windows standards is to have the 'Delete/Rename' function shown as an option, where this is appropriate. Surely when looking at a list of places, the same Delete/Rename could have been made ...

Re: Changing place names
I've come to this post a bit late, and can only agree with Original Poster, Roger! Use and editing of placenames needs some serious work doing on it. Being new to FH, I was going through the process of Geocoding all the places in my tree. When I came across a typo in one of the places, but when I tr...

Re: Problems Importing FTM Gedcom to FH
Mike, Thanks for the explanation. I'm not too concerned about the note problem, which as you say can be fixed by a plugin. I'm more concerned about the Address being placed as a note. Is there a 'simple' way to move these to an address field. I did look at a plugin to tidy up places, but to be hones...
