Re: Getting the most from Family Historian
Amazon delivered my book yesterday, and have spent the last few hours browsing through it, and at first glance I am sad to report I'm disappointed with it. Very little has been added over the V5 version, and despite its promise to be for new AND advanced users, as a Computer Graduate, found little '...

Re: autofill places
I hadn't considered reports, because I haven't got round to them yet. Another way round the problem, which might please both sdes of the argument, is if, as one typed, a drop-down list appeared showing next three or four closest alphabetical matches from the list. This is a method used in FTM, if me...

Re: autofill places
I must admit, I never thought of that, thanks for the explanation. I'll now ensure I enter an additional space before the comma wherever it causes a problem like this. EDIT Just changed 'Stepney,Middlesex,England' to 'Stepney ,Middlesex,England' and problem resolved, it now appears before 'Stepney G...

Re: autofill places
I think I disagree that in a new session, Place names are alphabetical. Every time I try to enter 'Stepney', it autofills with 'Stepney Green'. If it was aphabetical, Stepney would come before Stepney Green. This example is particularly annoying, as I have far more entries using Stepney, than I do f...

Re: Getting the most from Family Historian
Version 6 of this book is available on amazon uk for £14.95. (Mine ordered this morning!) Whilst it is nice to have a PDF version, I personally think having a proper book to refer to is far superior, (and for £14.95, quite reasonably priced). One can dip in and out of the book, make notes in the mar...

Re: Possible Bug when Editing Notes
Peter, As far as I can tell, Ctrl-c works correctly everywhere else on my PC. The problem has only manifested itself within PH to date, but to be honest, I'm getting to the point where I can't rule anything out. I'm tempted to get a keystroke capture program, just to see where the problem lays. PS a...

Re: Possible Bug when Editing Notes
Jimlad, I can happily copy facts and citations at same time, so as Mike says, FH must have its own clipboard built in. My problem is that the fact gets lost somewhere, and I don't know why. I can happily paste fact 10 times, and it works fine, then move to another family member and find the fact has...

Re: Possible Bug when Editing Notes
Further to my last post on this, I notice that one can copy a fact AND a citation at the same time, but their usage is a bit hit and miss. Which leads me to believe FH has it's own clipboard mechanism, contrary to what MikeTate has said. The following scenario highlights a problem there too. I enter...

Re: Possible Bug when Editing Notes
It happened again yesterday, and I was taking extra extra care of my keystrokes this time. I wrote a note for an individual, which also applied to his sibling, so I tried to copy it, rather than re-type it. I carefully highlighted the text, using 'Shift' and 'left' arrow key (i.e. not mouse). Then V...

Re: Renaming Flags
Lorna,
Thanks for your reply, but I was looking for a 'simple' way
I do realise you can play with queries to achieve it, but I was hoping they'd make it a bit easier for us!

Renaming Flags
Is there a simple way of renaming flags, once they have been assigned?
I have one called '1939 Checked' and wish to rename it to '1939 Entry Not found', so that its use is more meaningful.

Bug in 'Map all Places' screen
When I click on 'Map All Places', the Map opens with all places 'Ticked' and shown on Map. Occasionally, when I then untick 'Check all', not all are being un-checked! A couple, mainly those recently visited/added in previous sessions, remain ticked. Q1. Is this a known problem, or a possible bug? Q2...

Re: Possible Bug when Editing Notes
I agree Mike, weird doesn't describe it. You begin to doubt your sanity at times. I'll persevere, and double-double check my actions next time. It has happened again this morning, but when I tried to clarify my actions, it wasn't reproducable, and all follow up attempts worked fine. Worst type of er...

Re: Possible Bug when Editing Notes
Nice try Lorna, but no. I was taking special care and used Ctrl-X only, followed by Ctrl-V in the new note. The correct highlighted text was cut, but wrong text was pasted!

Re: Possible Bug when Editing Notes
Mike, It has happened again, and have attached a screen shot of the result. Last piece of text of 1841 note, originally ended with 'William 1833, Ann 1838 & James 1841 Living at 25 Pitts Place' The text 'Living at 25 Pitts Place' was from 1851 census, so wishing to move it to a new note, I highlight...

Re: Possible Bug when Editing Notes
Mike, I stand corrected, I did mean Ctrl-Z. As for touch pads, I never use one, horrible things, I barely tolerate them when I'm using my laptop on my lap, with no room for a mouse! Wherever possible, I stick with just mouse or just keyboard, and try not to switch between the two. Thinking further a...

Possible Bug when Editing Notes
When I find large Individual notes, with multiple items, I am tidying them up, by splitting the notes into separate notes, adding a date to each where necessary. I found that if I highlight a section for cutting and pasting to a new note, when I use Ctrl-X to cut the highlighted text, the whole of t...

Re: Specifying Source ID in a query [Solved]
No, i found some rogue entries that used 'Ancestry' as the source. They appeared in the result set because they didn't use 'Census 1841'. I need to change these to 'Census 1841' as and when I find them. (I assume the same will apply to other years too).

Re: Specifying Source ID in a query [Solved]
I do understand now, and will try this tommorrow, as I've just found out that not all use the 'Census 1841' source citation. So looking for the actual census fact may be more sensible.

Re: Specifying Source ID in a query [Solved]
Thanks Mike, The first expression was what I was looking for. My list of potential individuals has now dropped from around 1800 to 693! I was aware of the plugin you suggested, but it seemed over the top for what I wanted. With the census source incorporated into the query, I can further modify it a...

Specifying Source ID in a query [Solved]
I have a query that shows me all individuals who were around in 1841, so could potentially appear in 1841 census. How can I exclude all those whom I have already found, who will all be using my source 'Census 1841' ( ID 19) i.e. Where do I find Source ID in the data list, so that I can add it to a C...

Re: Modify children view in focus window
Mike & BillH, The reason I suggested showing just birth year, rather than full birthdate in family view, is because: A) Christening and Burials aside, most documents we search, generally only show year of birth or age, so would not normally be required for searching. B) If we need the full birth or ...

Re: Modify children view in focus window
Mike,
I think it a bit over the top to have everything customisable. It would be simple to modify the current code to insert just the year of the date field Date. Likewise with place. The easier it is to implement, the more likely it is to be adopted.
