Re: Paste a 'New' Copy

Mike,
Just read my last post, which explains exactly what I am after.

You seem hung up on the semantics, calling it copy, paste or clone is immaterial.

Re: Paste a 'New' Copy

Mike, The original idea was to have a button on the create citation dialogue box, that would 'Paste' the contents of the the fields in the highlighted source, into the fields of the source creation dialogue box, to save user having to type them in. After the user has reviewed the information pasted ...

Re: Ancestry.com integration

Nick Like you, I was taught it was spelt 'mn' rather than 'mm', and have since always spelt it that way. However, following your comment, I immediately dived into my Dictionaries (Collins and Webster) and was flabbergasted to find there was no mention of Dilemna (not even as a footnote to Dilemma) i...

Re: Paste a 'New' Copy

Mike, You seem to be raising objections for the sake of it! If 'cloning' is justified elsewhere, why not here, when creating a new source? All I'm suggesting is to make it available in 'Source Creation' dialogue. You don't have to complicate it with options, the only option users need is whether to ...

Re: Paste a 'New' Copy

Mike,
My work around may work for me, but others may want to copy the other fields as well, so a full clone would be preferable.

All I'm just asking for, is a way for the 'cloning' to be made readily available from within the source creation dialogue box, rather than opening other dialogue boxes.

Re: Ancestry.com integration

Not forgetting 'Mahoney' pronounced Marney, or 'Mainwaring' pronounce Mannering, or if the TV programme is to be believed, 'Bucket' is pronounce boo-kay

NB Dilemma is spelt Dilemna, go figure.

Re: Paste a 'New' Copy

Lorna and Jane, For what it's worth, I have found a simple way to produce what I need (nearly), without the hassle involved in the cloning methods already discussed. After clicking 'add Citation', I find a near match from the list of sources, highlight it, then copy it using Ctl-C. I ignore the warn...

Re: Paste a 'New' Copy

Adrian, Sorry about the confusion concerning dialogue boxes. Like you, when I want to add a citation, I click the 'Add Citation' button, and up pops a dialogue box for me to a) Select a Source then b) add a citation. This is the dialogue box I wish to modify by adding a 'Clone Source' button, alongs...

Re: Paste a 'New' Copy

Lorna, Despite your fine explanation, there are still too many steps involved, jumping from dialogue box to dialogue box. What I am suggesting is one simple step, using a single dialogue box. What I think you and Mike are forgetting, is that before one wishes to add a citation to a record, one uses ...

Re: Paste a 'New' Copy

Lorna & Mike, One flaw with both your methods of cloning, is that once the record is cloned, you've then got to find it to open its property box for editing, then you have to find it again using the citation dialogue box to assign it to your record, clunky to say the least. My suggestion combines cl...

Re: Paste a 'New' Copy

Mike Although your way works, with many fields in a source, too cumbersone. Why not let computer do the copying for you, with one click of a button? Lorna, Your suggestion makes more sense, and perhaps makes my 'wish' somewhat redundant. However, a 'Clone' button on the 'Select Source' dialogue box,...

Paste a 'New' Copy

After moving to Method 1 , my sources now contain a lot more text in their title e.g Census 1901 RG13 Piece 1234 Folio 567 Page 89 . When I find a new Source, I need to A: Check source hasn't been used before B: Create a new source if it is a new entry, ensuring Title is in kept consistent with simi...

Re: Possible Bug in Copy & Paste Source

Lorna, I might well do that, but before I do, I want to make doubly sure it is not something I'm doing. In hindsight, it may not be pasting new source at all, as I only spot the error after 6 or 7 pastes, and have to go back to correct the previous 5 or 6. It could be that although I click the 'Copy...

Possible Bug in Copy & Paste Source

In the process of moving to Method 1 for source/citations, I have been creating new Sources, combing Source and Text from source . After successfully creating the new Source, I copy it, then replace all the original citations, by deleting the original source/citation, then pasting the newly created ...

Re: Changing source to Method 1

Lorna & Mike, Thanks, that was the post I was thinking of. Mike, media is not a problem, as I have yet to associate any media (census images for example ). I may start linking them once I have successfuly completed the conversion to method 1. I'll keep you both posted on the outcome, especially if I...

Changing source to Method 1

When I was an FTM user, I got used to having a 2-stage source e.g. Census 1851 + HO107 12345 F320 P40 , and being a unique source, I could link it a) to media image 1851 12345 F320 P40.jpg b) and other people on same census page. In moving to FH, the above was converted to one source Census 1851 , w...

Re: Locking Property Box

Lorna,
It don't obscure nothing, I have a new 40" monitor :D
I have FH6, Firefox and Windows Explorer open at same time, and there's still oodles of space!!

I recommend it, no more Alt_Tabbing between programmes!

Re: Locking Property Box

Mike,

That doesn't do what I want. If one clicks on Records, property box still closes.
I want property box to remain open, irrespective of which workspace I open.

It is not a major problem, just a niggle really, but if can be done, so much the better.

Locking Property Box

Now that I have a new Windows10 PC and a 40" 4k TV for use as a UHD monitor, there is plenty of space on the screen to have the property box open on screen all the time.
Does anyone know if it is possible to 'lock' it open?
Would it be a feature worth adding to 'wants list'?

Re: Getting the most from Family Historian

Following on from my previous post, may I clarify something. If you have the V5 PDF version, this (V6) edition adds very little, and I wouldn't recommend the additional expense. However, if you don't have the V5 PDF version, this edition would be a better buy, as it is more relevant to FH V6, but se...

Brian,
That's the point I was trying to make, the upgrade worked fine on my 'new' Windows10.
As you pointed out, if Peanuts has an 'upgraded' Windows 10, that could be the problem. ;)

In my case, it was a new PC that came with Windows 10 pre-installed, and upgrade to 6.2 worked fine.

Mike, could it be that peanuts went from 6.0.4? I upgraded from 6.1.? with no problem, and like peanuts, I am running Windows 10 home edition.
