Re: Organizing photos.

Jessie, My solution relies on giving every one in my tree their own custom ID. Mine is based on the ahnetafel numbering system, prefixed with a J, using my grandsons as the root ( ie no J1). Direct ancestors would have a straight number like J256, J314 etc. Their children would have a suffix added l...

Re: Map window address bar

pwe,
Rest assured you are doing the correct thing, but for some reason the facility has stopped working. Like you, I have resorted to alternative means of finding places, such as google search, ipad maps app and my trustee gazeteer.
As you already know by now, Jane has reported this to Calico.

Re: Map Places doesn't work anymore

Thanks Mike, I thought the loss of the search function in maps was tied my changing maps. You've put my mind at rest, I thought that it was something I did. :D

Re: Map Places doesn't work anymore

I have also noticed this over the past few weeks and can't fathom the reason. Sometime it works, and sometimes it doesn't. To be honest, I've given up on it, and resort to iPad maps or my trustee gazeteer. I'm not at my PC at the moment to check, but isn't there a choice of mapping systems to use wi...

Mike, Bug report is #342499 Full reply is as follows: To: Mike Loney Thank you for reporting that. Re: Copy/Paste in the Property Box

Mike,
Sadly, when I did click the contact us button, nothing happened, so I just resorted to a link that did work.
Thanks for the advice.
Silly question, but could this be put in a 'sticky' post at top of forum? I did search FAQ's, but nothing came up!

Re: Copy/Paste in the Property Box

Mike,
I don't know if there is an official way to report bugs, I just e-mailed them via the e-mail link on their home page. Let me know if this isn't correct.

Re: Copy/Paste in the Property Box

Just to confirm, Alt-PrtScr does not use regular clipboard, and didn't interfere with FH copy/paste. Victor, I have used snipping tools in the past, but with a new PC, don't wish to clutter it to much, by adding unnecessary programs, especially ones that are already built-in to Windows. Capturing th...

Re: Copy/Paste in the Property Box

Victor, I've never tried it in this situation, but doesn't windows 'Screen Capture' Alt-Prtscn (which I generally use to capure a screen) also use the clipboard? I wonder if this too destroys FH copy (I'll give it a try tomorrow). Mike, I do appreciate it is my own fault that I lose what I copy by o...

Re: Copy/Paste in the Property Box

I partially agree with you Mike, but there ARE inconsistencies in FH! You can copy a source, AND copy a fact and use them independently. I.e after you have copied the fact, then copied the source, you can past the fact to other members of the household, then after entering occupations, one can paste...

Re: How to Handle People With Multiple Names

Ron, Like others, I always use a woman's maiden name wherever possible. The way I get round 'unknown' maiden names is to use the Nee suffix, e.g. Sally /Markham Nee ??/. By placing 'Nee ?? ' inside the slashes (/), FH treats it all as a single surname. It also comes in handy when I periodically hunt...

Re: GRO Research Flags/Expressions

Mike, The OP wanted you to explain the difference between the use of flags and expressions and you asked for a situation where you could explain the diference, hence my post. I offerd my example as a way for you to simply explain the diference! In that regard, I do object to you splitting it from th...

Re: GRO Research Flags/Expressions

Jane, There must be appropriate information regards Research Attribute somewhere in the Knowledge Base, but sadly, the Knowledge base, in my experience is extremely dificult to navigate and find anything useful within it! Despite your hint of 'Research Attribute', using that as a search term within ...

Re: Flags

If I may propose a suggestion for the demonstration requested in the 14337|Flags thread. I have a query that lists people born between 1837 and 1911 who do not have a Gro birth reference, which I use to correct the omission, moving through the resultset Individual by Individual. I do not wish to rep...

Re: Quantify quality of relationships

When I said flags were closest, I meant you could have a flag 'Parentage Certain', which, whilst associated with an Individual, actually refers to the relationship between the individual and their parents.

Re: Quantify quality of relationships

Mike, Whilst I don't object to you moving the post, this really has nothing to do with FH per se. The problem arises regardless of which method you use to store your data, whether it be FH, FTM or spreadsheet. There seems to be no recognised mechanism for rating the actual relationship between paren...

Quantify quality of relationships

How do others indicate the accuracy and reliability of the parentage of someone? One can mark the quality of information of most things, names, date of birth etc, but what about relationships? i.e. How do you indicate that the parentage you have for someone in your tree is100% accurate, and beyond r...

Jane,
But did you report the error to freebmd?

All sites have errors in one form or another, and they will only get better if we all take the effort to report them when we find them. ;)

Re: Displaying Occupation in Diagrams

Nigel, I was a long term user of FTM, before Ancestry pulled the plug. I bought FH at a genealogy fair, on the recommendation of a stallholder (My-History), due to its excellent charting abilities. So far, I am extremely pleased that I chose FH, as it gives me astounding access to the underlying dat...

Re: How do I copy a photograph to multiple entries

Mike, Following on from the OP, I have a 'brickwall' image, that I wish to assign to around 400 'End of Line' individuals. (See post re 14284|End of Line Marker for individuals). Whenever I group the individuals in the media list window, the 'assign Simple Link' is greyed out. How can one add this i...

Re: End of Line Marker

I too use a custom 'End of Line' flag, which I find very useful as a filter in a query to list these individuals. However, I do like David's idea of using a 'Brick Wall Ahead' sign, which would make the individuals plainly visible in so many diferent scenarios. :D
