Re: Importing Marriages from Legacy
Thank you for your patience! This has been, by far, the toughest software change I've gone through in many years of Ancestry research. I've obviously been very lucky until now. I think I'm nearly there... I did try to work through the "Beginners Guide", but something in my PC doesn't like it. Most o...

Re: Importing from Legacy
Yes, the notes are all present, in one great big batch in the GED file as displayed by FH6. What they don't do is display against the individual couples. FTM and Legacy both had the option to record data against a marriage, which was (to me, at the time), the logical way to do it. If the individual ...

Re: Importing from Legacy
Oh bother :( Not only the media, but the marriage notes seem to have unlinked, too. That's a few thousand entries gone :( Stuff like this (and some a lot more detailed than this): Name: Esther C Jillings Spouse Surname: Stammers Registration Year: 1915 Registration Quarter: Oct-Nov-Dec Registration ...

Importing Marriages from Legacy
I have just found that I have a variation on this problem. I suspect the cause is similar. The transfer from Legacy 8 to FH6 worked for most categories of data. I had to edit the Legacy GEDCOM 5.5.1 file slightly to point it at the correct location for the media, and to change "1 CHR" to "1 BAPM" (I...

Re: List names by place
Jim, GULP! That does all I was hoping for and a lot more! Many thanks indeed. The ability to keep it open and go to add entries is a major bonus. Being able to sort by fact, and click to see more, is brilliant. Mike, Yes, I was "exporting" the .GED file rather than trying to read the original, but t...

Re: Follow user instructions on file locations
I have, Mike. D:\Documents is the default documents folder, and most software recognises that. I only put in symlinks where specific software ignores the default. There are fewer than ten links in all, most for Apple (iTunes and related stuff), FTM, Legacy, and a couple of others. When a C:\Users\Ke...

Re: List names by place
Thank you, Mervyn. I'm over 90% of the way to where I wanted to be, so I'm happy. I'll look into setting up a Named List. Most of the time, the list is used to see who I don't have and who therefore needs to be added to the database. I just came up with a workaround which may supersede this: I copie...

Re: Follow user instructions on file locations
Interesting, Mike. There is indeed a Calico Pie folder on C:\Program Files (x86) but all the stuff in there is dated 2011 or 2012 and I didn't spot those when I moved the batch of FH6 stuff to D. It's using 4.2MB of space. There is also a Calico Pie folder in C:\Program Data, using 14MB. I can affor...

Re: Follow user instructions on file locations
It would be easier to"Move" the My Documents folder to a location on your D Drive (This is what I have done), then softawre will use that as the preferred default location for the data files. The "My Documents" folder on my PC is D:\Documents, and has been for the last couple of PCs I've had. Most ...

Re: List names by place
Thank you! That worked with no further ado. I can't keep that window open and go off and add data, but that's a minor niggle that I can cope with. I'm still "climbing the mountain" of how to drive FH6, after some years of fluency with FTM (until the "non-existent" memory leak bit me) and a few month...

Re: Follow user instructions on file locations
Yes indeed, Mike. The trial version was very well behaved, and installed where I told it - D:\FH6. There is nothing at all from FH6 (still) in C:\Program Data or C:\Program Files (x86). The trial version put the .GED, media and related stuff in D:\FH6\Family Historian Projects as instructed. The sof...

Re: List names by place
Thank you for the answer. I'm doing something wrong, because I can't see a "Places" tab. At the top of the screen I have "File - Edit - View - Add - Publish - Tools - Internet - Windows - Help", and under that "Save - Home - Focus - Media - Diagrams - Query - Map - Property Box - Find Record - Move ...

Follow user instructions on file locations
My computer has an old and delicate but very fast solid state drive as the boot drive C. Because of its age and small size, I do not use it for data storage, only for the boot system and a few selected files. When I installed the trial version of FH6, I told it to put all its "stuff" on drive D, in ...

List names by place
I've just switched to FH version 6.0.4 (running on Windows 7 Home Premium, fully up to date) after some years with FTM and a few months with Legacy 8.0. I won't go into the reasons for changing - I'm sure they are familiar! I've learned how to drive FH6, with one exception. Searching the Forum hasn'...
