Re: Female Married Name
I always use a person's birth name. If I have a female whose maiden name I can't find then I put their married surname in square brackets instead. e.g. [Smith] I also have various name attributes (Married Name,Confirmation Name, etc) where I can record different uses of names and can attach sources,...

Re: Custom Query - can I use GROUP BY like SQL
Mike - many thanks for the quick reply as usual. I'll probably remove the duplicate entries in Excel, I don't think I would need this information enough to warrant going through writing a Plugin for it. I just wanted to know which Facts I've used so I can check the narrative sentences, rather than g...

Custom Query - can I use GROUP BY like SQL
I am looking to create a custom query listing all Fact types that I have used in my Project. However, when I request just the name of a Fact I get a row for every use within my project (i.e. all birth entries, all census entries, etc). For example, if I have 100 separate birth facts, I get 100 rows ...

Re: Using a confirmation name instead of a birth name - advice/suggestions?
Mike Many thanks for the speedy response as always. Think I need to sit down and work out how I want to do this. Yes I have both birth and confirmation events for him (along with quite a few others) with respective source citations, etc. At present I'm leaning towards option 2, as I'm thinking that ...

Using a confirmation name instead of a birth name - advice/suggestions?
I have an ancestor who's birth was registered with the name Thomas Colebridge. Following his Roman Catholic confirmation he then used his confirmation name of Thomas Christopher Colebridge in all subsequent documents I can find (including his BMD death entry, 1911 Census, his WW1 enlistment document...

Re: Narrative Report - multiple facts in a sentence
Mike / Lorna Many thanks for the prompt replies - much appreciated. Thought it may have been a bit too much to ask :D I was thinking along the same lines as Mike, in that I use Custom Fact fields and include it in the sentence for the 'main' fact (i.e. Occupations recorded at a Census, etc), althoug...

Narrative Report - multiple facts in a sentence
Apologies if this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find anything after extensive searches. Is it possible to include multiple instances of a fact type into a single sentence for a narrative report? For example, I have collated a number of Occupation facts for a number of my ancestors from v...

BMD and Census Check query
All Firstly, apologies if this is the wrong place to put this, but it didn't seem to fit in elsewhere on the forum. I have created a quick BMD Census check query which, hopefully, some of you may find useful. This is not intended in any way to be a replacement for any other queries or plug-ins. Pers...

Re: Primary birth fact
What I've done in cases such as this is choose what I believe is the correct birth date based on the available evidence and record this as the Birth fact.
I've then created a custom 'Alt Birth' fact for other birth dates with the associated sources, etc.

Re: "Ancestors by Generation" - NOT in narrative form?
I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of narrative reports - but that's just my personal preference. Have you looked under the Miscellaneous reports group? Publish > Miscellaneous Reports > Individual Summary Report (for Web, CD or DVD) . I have customised this for my own individual reports, along...

Re: Gedstar Pro
All fixed now. Typical - post a message here and then realise where I've gone wrong. I was using the Export Gedcom Plug In - however, since I last loaded my Gedcom to Gedstar Pro, I must now have an entry that was causing Gedstar Pro to crash. My problem was that I was exporting as Standard Gedcom (...

I have this as my Gedcom viewer on my phone and tablet. Everything has been working fine upto last night. Tried to convert my Gedcom file to the Gedstar Pro format but it keeps crashing. Re: GRO Search facility - possible error
Mike I've been in touch with Peter who runs the Lost Cousins website and was heavily involved in the pre-Beta testing and he's told me that he suggested changing the results to Q1,Q2,Q3,Q4 to help avoid confusion - but this suggestion was rejected. Hopefully they will consider the alternative of usi...

Re: GRO Search facility - possible error
Apologies for potentially mis-leading you all as it appears I've got mixed up reading the quarters as J and M in the results - as Mike has already pointed out. It looks like I was reading J as January when it's really June. Doesn't help when you're looking for a birth in May!!!! Might have been more...

GRO Search facility - possible error
All I've have come across a possible issue with the GRO search facility. When I searched for a birth in 1888 for Q2 - the results came back for Q1. I tried again, using Q1 in the search, and the results came back as Q2. I tried again with other names and other years, and the issue appears to still r...

Re: All Relatives Diagram
I think I know what you mean by the Aunt's tree being inside the Uncle's tree. There is an option to keep all generations together on one line of the diagram as it where. However, off the top of my head, I'm not sure if that is available in the All Relatives diagram - may only be the ancestors/desce...

Re: How to Handle People With Multiple Names
Apologies - I know I'm late to this one, but I think the replies you've had Ron show that people deal with name changes in different ways. There is the option to add other 'AKA' names for a person (there is a greyed 'more...' next to the name on the Main tab of the property box), however, like other...

Re: ~Preferred~ Facts
Arthur As you will see in my previous post I also prefer the Alt Birth method - it certainly makes things a lot clearer to me in reports, etc. As has been said previously, a person can only be born once, which is why I prefer to have just one Birth event and an Alt Birth event for alternative possib...

There are also some other backup options available to you. If you have a GMail account, then you should get 15Gb (that's nearly 4 basic DVD's) of free storage to Google Drive (Google's equivalent to Microsoft's 'Cloud') - which can then be accessed direct from the internet. Another alternative, if y...

Re: ~Preferred~ Facts
In my tree I have an ancestor who has 2 separate dates of birth recorded in different sources (just a different day of the month - 24th and 25th). I simply created a custom event called 'Alternate Birth' to record the second date and put my preferred date as the birth event date. Doing it this way l...

Custom Attributes in Report

These name attributes are included in the "Main Section Items" group and removed from the "Individual Events ...
