Even more Internet savy

Modern genealogy can't do without Internet. FH6 supports this already in a neat way (web search window, drag and drop to sources etc.). I think a few small extras might make it even more "modern times". The following suggestions assume usage of the internal browser. 1. The web address is known, plea...

split notes delimiter options

I use the note field to enrich my narratives (ex TMG :) ) and I use it split in parts in the sentences by means of the TextPart function (like {=TextPart(%FACT.NOTE2%,1)} etc.). This works fine but I think 2 small improvements might make it even more wonderful: 1. Make the delimiter any character ch...

Re: Web drag text with CR preserved

Hi Mike, Yes, I have the Web Search window on the left and the Source property box open on the right. When I copy lines from an external browser window everything works fine; but when I do it from the internal Web Search window everything gets concatenated together. And that's just too bad; the inte...

Web drag text with CR preserved

When I drag text from a webpage into "Text from source" field in the Source property box, the carriage returns get lost. That's a pity since it's such a handy feature.

Is this a bug (I hope so!)? If not, a small setting somewhere to preserve the CR's would be great.

Re: Recording a Family's Residence

Hi Mike, I had not been experimenting with the query feature enough. I think I am now getting a feeling of data references and functions; very powerful! About the shared residences. My memory and the rich feature set of FH6 is playing tricks on me. Years ago I tried to share residence fact in TMG as...

Re: Recording a Family's Residence

I agree with "is the problem as soon as the family members are actually mentioned"; that is why I won't mention them. :) I agree also with "if you add all the Children"; that's why I don't add them all, but only the ones that were (at that time) to (be likely) to live at the family house. If I have ...

Re: Recording a Family's Residence

Hi Mike, Yes, I did read it and that's why I wrote that I was trying a simpler approach. The difference being: - I intend to use the "Family" witness to trigger a piece of text: "family" or "spouse" in the Individual's sentence and something accordingly in the one for the Family witness. I use the "...

Re: Recording a Family's Residence

I am trying a simpler (I hope) approach but am still working on the sentence. The idea is to use a witness named Family and when using the standard Residence fact add all family people (spouse and children) as family. Then test in the sentence if family is single or plural and have it print "and spo...

Re: Non-English sentences

Well I've gone back to English and indeed, the best thing might be to send an email to Calico Pie. a) Translating a report is an option, but it is at the very end my my option list (it's 2015!) :) b) The low number of votes is easily explained; all the users are English speakers, so they have no pri...

Re: Non-English sentences

Hi Mike Returning to the topic of non-English sentences after a few days of trying to get a comprehensive set of Dutch sentences. To start with my conclusion: I regard it as impossible to build a fact set for another language (e.g. Dutch) without a set of built in features in FH. Reasons: 1. Even th...

Thanks for the very clear explanations Mike. FH keeps getting better and better in terms of flexibility and ease of use. One just needs to know how and where. ;)

As an add on... can I also change the wording of facts on the main tab? They seem to stick to English.

Re: Sentence translation for residence adds field?

I am now using the standard fact types in my project.

When I clone the standard and rename it Dutch and change the sentences (and do the other thing...), I still need to change the existing Birth, Marriage etc. facts to the Dutch fact set, don't I?

Mike, impressive as allways!

I'll go for a Dutch set. Thanks for all your help!

BTW I'm using your plugin to make the necessary changes. Works like a charm.

Re: Sentence translation for residence adds field?

Hi Mike, I did the cloning, but also created a new fact Woonplaats (because I couldn't change the Name :)). I then copied the sentence from the Residence sentence and modified it. So the special nature of Residence as an Attribute Fact is the problem. Indeed I also found the workaround by changing t...

Sentence translation for residence adds field?

I started translating expressions to Dutch. I created a copy of the standard fact set (and named it "Dutch"). The translation of events like Birth, Death and Marriage went smoothly. But, when I translated "Residence" to the Dutch name "Woonplaats", an extra field "Woonplaats" appeared in the propert...

Re: Auto-text Repository Keywords

Thanks Mike,

I forgot about the system date. Works fine for me (as it is the date I access the website and enter the data).

Let's hope Nick agrees with the Repository also.

Cheers, Joop

Auto-text Repository Keywords

I use a pretty simple sourcing "template". A birth certificate would look like "Rep CR-birth year, cert.nr., extra ref. info (www date)". Here Rep is a short reference to the repository, CR is Civil Registration and www means I got the info from the website of Rep on date date. Ancestral Sources is ...

Double persons after merge

I did a merge of a husband and a wife (2 merges). They were from different sources, but the same persons. Family 1 had a daughter and family 2 also (a different one). After the merge I have 1 husband record and 1 wife record, but they seem to be married twice and have 1 daughter from the first marri...

Hi Mike, Yes, I have your plugin installed; good work. I hope Nick can expand the program a bit; it deserves to be used outside English speaking countries also. Non-English entries

Hi Nick, Downloaded and installed your program and I am very impressed. You created a view on genealogy that (as I see it) every quality genealogy software should have built in: start with the source and work from there. I live in The Netherlands and there we have lots of data (database records and ...
