Maximum note length?
I use Getparagrah in the note field of facts to use the different paragraphs in the fact's sentence. Something strange occurred: with long text parts the sentence was cut off. Anybody aware of there being a maximum to either the fact note field or the Getparagrah?

Re: New Pre-release: 6.1.1
Mike, Yes, sacrosanct is indeed the right word to describe the principal situation: backward compatibility versus innovation. Probably the best solution for the current implementation would then be a working version of Simon's residence example with suppression of the principal by e.g {blank}? If th...

Re: New Pre-release: 6.1.1
I haven't been using FH for months and was pleased to notice a new (updated pre-release). Reading through the discussions about 6.1.1 (and today about 6.1.2) there is one thing that I would like to add (or rather emphasize since Mike already has written something about it) and that is the extension ...

Re: Best way to cope with "objects"?
I have now come up with this solution: 1. I use a dummy unrelated person with the name equal to the fact type (in this case Sale). 2. The principal sentence is: Sellers: {role=seller}<br>Buyers: {role=buyer}<br>Neighbours: {role=neighbour, neighbours}<br><br> 3. The Seller sentence is: <para><{date:...

Re: Best way to cope with "objects"?
Hi Lorna, Thanks for your ideas. I also started off with the source record approach, but... It would be so nice to have e.g. a sale of some land as a sentence in the narrative of the people related to the sale. And, of course, dated and located correctly for all related people in their respective ro...

Best way to cope with "objects"?
A lot of older records record transactions between people involving property (land, houses etc.), hereafter called objects. Usually these objects are of serious interest to genealogy research (e.g. to determine relationships and find out if different names apply to the same person). Also the object ...

Using principal's note info in witness sentences
I've become a happy user of the note field in combination with "Getparagrah" to create sentences. But I now got stuck trying to create a "sell" fact type where one (or more) person(s) sell(s) a property to one (or more) other person(s). The sentence (1 to 1 version) is like this: {date} {individual}...

Re: Best practices
Like Shosh I was somewhat confused by the name Knowledge Base. What I've learned from this discussion is: - KB offers a lot and is worth delving into; - KB as a name is not synonymous to Best Practices (etc.) for everybody and that's a pity since it might lead to underuse; - I think Shosh suggests s...

Re: Best practices
I agree that every structuring (or indexing) leads to situations where arguments exist to include them in every index. Great examples are: in what folder to store your pictures, where do you archive your mail (gmail uses multiple "labels"). My suggestion for Best Practices (or Tips and Tricks) shoul...

Re: Residence with date on main property tab
Yes, I customised the Main tab to include Residence. But in the predefined way. I'll now change it to what you proposed. Thanks for your help Mike. It's amazing how flexible FH is when you know more about the internals.

Residence with date on main property tab
For some reason the (very handy) residence field on the main tab comes without a date field. It would be great if I could enter a date and a residence (as is often what one needs) and it would be even more great if some + sign was available next to it to clear the field for a next entry (so, keep th...

Best practices
Would a forum entry "Best Practices" or "Tips and Tricks" be something to share approaches of users in their research or publishing? I know of the Knowledge Base but in my view (and experience) a knowledge base is what it says (it's about knowledge) and BP/TT would not be about increasing knowledge ...

Re: Preserve find record settings
I saw some of the other request as well. I think the overall wish is (somewhat in line with the remember status request) to have a general remembrance of the past facility in FH. And, FH being software specialised in "the past", this must be child's play.

remember status
When doing research I am somewhere in my tree and usually have some workspace windows open. It would be (very) nice if FH would remember where I left off when quitting for the night and (optionally) bring me back there the next morning.

colour coding extended
Colour makes life beautiful. And since FH is part of my life I would like to have use FH colour as much and as functional as possible. 1. Make it depend on conditions like conditions/flags (e.g. all ancestors of my wife are red, and mine are blue or show all kids that died at an age of 18 or younger...

Preserve find record settings
I use find record a lot to quickly find a person. It always starts with all options (selections of what data to search) selected. That means I have to deselect them one by one before doing the "quick" search. For the first time, no big deal, but it doesn't remember my preference and after the tenth ...

Hi Mike, thanks very much! It works perfectly; amazing so few codes, such great results. And, I even understand your explanation of how it works (which does not mean I could make one up myself :)). If, only now IE would behave a bit different for the other website (www) then that major part op copyi...

Re: cleansing source text
Hi Mike, it's fantastic how powerful these tools are. Your solution is near to perfect, there is however one small snag that I can't explain. I've attached a text file to show you what goes wrong. Most of the lines go well but starting from (see text file) Naam: Job van Beek, there is no newline aft...

It's usually (if not always): item: 2 spaces newline space newline data space newline space newline next item to be replaced by: item: data newline nextitem An example of the site with this behavior is on link: http://www.streekarchiefvpr.nl/pages/nl/zoeken-in-collecties/genealogische-akten.php?miva...

Re: cleansing source text
Beautiful Mike, thanks!
It's like magic... would it (on top of this) also be possible to change : followed by newline by : followed by space? Can that be done in the same "run" with the previous newline trick?

Re: cleansing source text
Hi Mike,
Thanks, this now works fine for consecutive linefeeds. It now appears that sometimes there are 1 or 2 spaces followed by a linefeed (and/or preceded). Is it possible to filter that out too?
