Registrar's signature decipher, please!
Please may I ask if any body can give me a lead to decipher this Dennistoun Registrar's signature from 1890? The two marriages on the form were both entered by the Assistant Registrar and so there is no other writing in this hand to compare the signature to. Thank you for your time and assistance. B...

Re: Ancestoral Sources:"Error reading GEDCOM file"
Good afternoon Mike, Notice the GEDCOM Report starts with an anomaly in the Family record F385, which is the one Validate complains about. I think it is at that point the GEDCOM truncation has occurred. Correct. No Family records after F385. I imagine in that 'broken' Project, in the Records Window,...

Re: Ancestoral Sources:"Error reading GEDCOM file"
Good morning Jane and Mike, In FH in the Records Window, open the Families tab, and sort into Rec Id order by clicking the Rec Id column header. You should be able to confirm that Rec Id 401 does not exist. Yes. I suspect the File > Validate... command will fix the problem by removing the broken lin...

Ancestoral Sources:"Error reading GEDCOM file"
Please may I ask for some help in loading a GEDCOM into AS? On trying to load a GEDCOM into AS v7.2.4 that I have been creating in FH v6.2 from new, I immediately saw a 'Error' window, with a white cross in a circle, with a red background, with the following message: "File cannot be loaded: Invalid ...

Re: Ancestris versus Family Historian
Mike, Thank you for your time and considered comments. The thought of getting my head around another database does not fill me with joy and I do like the combined package of AS and FH for data entry. May be FH v7 will go on the list! I will need to pay close attention to the does and don't you have ...

Re: Ancestris versus Family Historian
Mike, Please may I ask if you have any updates, observations, recommendations to make on the Ancestris software and the implications of its use of Java, versus FH v7.0.8? I am swithering whether to upgrade to FH v7.0.8, as I am not using all the buttons and whistles in FH v6.2.7 by a country mile an...

Re: A moment of levity for 2021 or is it?
Aye Brian, Looks like some wag has seen the opportunity to amend the original OCR by using the text amendment facility to the left of the document screen. ;) So far as I am aware, as long as you are logged in to the BNA, then you can make amendments to the original OCR scan, to 'assist', or otherwis...

Re: writing a personal history connected to Family Historian
Aye princessbarbski, I have exported individual's GEDCOM from Family Historian (FH) v6.4.2 and successfully imported them into Personal Historian (PH) v3 Essentials (Free version), without problem, so far! What can appear to be a cluttered series of entries is easily populated/expanded, with your pe...

Oh you "poor" souls, what was your Xmas bill for a day of gluttony? AS v5.3 Generic information saves?
Good evening, I have been using AS v5.3 to populate FH v6.2.7 and have used the 'Generic information' (exact wording maybe different!) format when transferring the data entry into FH. I haven't entered data into my small database for approximately 6 months and now have a wee backlog. The froth of th...

Re: Recording Scottish "Tee" names
Aye GeorgeJ, I would agree with "Wulliam", having worked over much of Scotland since 1973, these additional "names" often relate to the place from which the person comes or a particular trait, mannerism they have and I have always known them as "bynames". e.g. Willie 'Skye' and his son Lachie 'Skye'...

Re: Best way to capture images
May I add that circular glass paper weights work very well, are inert and smooth surfaced and will not damage documents, photos, maps or cloth articles. They are not cheap ~£10 for a set of four (4) + P&P & VAT. An alternative, which is also not cheap, is a large piece of plate glass that can be use...
