Re: MBE awarded & military records untraceable

Good morning Helen,

May I ask if you have had a browse through these newspapers available at the Hampshire Archive for your Grandfather?

Re: MBE awarded & military records untraceable

Thank you Jane, for the link to the RLC archive site. The RASC where my Grandfathers mob, before he joined the MGC and I am still digging after 15 years! Slow progress is possible.

Good health.

Re: MBE awarded & military records untraceable

Aye Adrian, thank you for the enlightenment towards OBE and MBE, much appreciated and another reason "Why?" I enjoy genealogy. I am still trying to get my head around William Samuel Fields lack of appearance, so far, in the London Gazette of the time. However, I shall leave further 'digging' to imac...

Re: MBE awarded & military records untraceable

Aye imac_boy, Having re-read your posting, I am confused! :? The letter from St.James's Palace refers to the award of the OBE and yet the envelope addresses your Uncle as having been awarded the MBE! :? I leave that mystery to you. ;) After a bit more digging, I believe I have come across the entry ...

Re: MBE awarded & military records untraceable

Aye imac_boy, Rather than digging in Ancestry, I have found 'FindMyPast' to be very good for WWI records and I took the liberty to make a search using your Uncle's details from his Medal Card. I took a screen dump of the top 5 results and wondered if the 3rd, 4th and 5th entries are of the same man ...

Re: 18th of Light Dragoon Guards

Aye Ann, May I suggest that you have a read through his blog and make contact with Paul Nixon (http://armyservicenumbers.blogspot.co.uk/) ? Paul's insight into military records, their location and potential availability, even though your research maybe outwith his more usual area of research can be ...

Re: Where am I?

Good evening Lorna,

Thank you for your straight forward instructions, at 02:30am I don't always see the obvious! ;)

I don't cope with written 'Help' very well either, but that was really good. :D

Re: Where am I?

Aye Peter, Did quite a few surveys around Castleton and Newcastleton and didn't hear the "Shielding" place name being used. However, as already suggested I have referred to the NLS website and trawled through all of the 25 inch to the mile, 1st edition, 1855-1882 sheets, http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch...

Re: Location of FH 'Project' files and folders?

Aye Mike, after a long walk, I came back to the debacle and took drastic action. I deleted the 'F:\Family History\Family Historian Project' folder, created a folder 'F:\Family History\FH_Projects' and then used FH to copy across my projects from earlier backups. Using this string 'To copy/rename a P...

Re: Location of FH 'Project' files and folders?

Good morning Bill and Mike, thank you both for your constructive observations upon my debacle. I am going to sit down quietly, reload an earlier copy from my backup and start again! Bill: Old habits from the late '80's die hard and I don't 'trust' 'My Documents', with everything getting dumped into ...

Location of FH 'Project' files and folders?

My apologies for cluttering up the forum, but my 'bet noir' has struck again! I appear not to be able to get my head around the 'Folder', 'File' structure used by FH. I have attached 3 screen dumps to illustrate my inability and used the 'Help' and the FHv6 manual to try and sort this out! I suspect...

Re: Organizing photos.

Aye Jessie and Ann, I had/have similar problems getting my head around "Where?" and "How?" to structure my files and folders and it was sufficiently bad for me to consider "giving up" on using FH to organise them. The old "Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS)" acronym is best applied! I too have my own syst...

Re: Free Findmypast and Family Historian Webinar

Good evening Mervyn, thank you for your suggestion. I have given it a try and it makes no difference to my inability to view some videos, so I have reverted to the 'default' Firefox setting. If I find the solution, I shall post it on here.

Re: Free Findmypast and Family Historian Webinar

Good evening Joan, Thank you for your consoling words. I think the problem relates to specific sites and the code they are using to publish/launch their videos. WHY? I cannot answer. I can cope with binary arithmetic, just, but algebra and logic are not in my wiring. ;) If I find or somebody shows m...

Re: Free Findmypast and Family Historian Webinar

Aye Valkrider and Mike, My thanks to you both for your positive responses. The YMMV had me baffled :? but that isn't difficult, with 'text' speak! I uninstalled the Silverlight and updated the Adobe Flash Player to v23.0.0.207, rebooted, then cleaned up the drive and defragged. Resulting in quicker ...

Thank you Jane and 'tatewise, I accept my comment towards Calico Pie may have been unnecessarily harsh and apologise if offence has been taken. Re: Free Findmypast and Family Historian Webinar

I was disappointed that when asked about Accepting/Rejecting hints from non-UK records with only a UK subscription, the answer was to buy a Worldwide subscription! There are other scenarios where this applies, such as when the user knows about a hint and does not want to waste PAYG credits to Rejec...

Aye "jmurphy", Thank you for posting the link to Paul Nixon's Blog, just the ticket, as I have been trying to decipher my Grandfathers Army Service number and the answer is on Paul's blog.
