Re: Importing from 'Generations'

Yes, I was trying to keep my answer concise, but the principle is the same: add a tag if there isn't one, and make sure that any tag on these events can't be mistaken for anything else.

Re: Pasting into Text from Source/Autotext

After reading all the comments, I'm still leaning towards putting my census data in tables; I accept that these don't work well in printed reports, but as I don't use these much I think I can live with that. These are going to be mainly for my own on-screen benefit, and in view of what Nick says abo...

Re: Importing from 'Generations'

This issue with Gedcom tags in Generations sounds very similar to my experience when moving from Generations to Legacy. I wrote about it earlier in this thread (29 Apr 2021) - this is part of my post: I can't now remember all the details now, but I've a feeling that with user-defined fact types Gene...

Re: Pasting into Text from Source/Autotext

The question for me is “why do you want formatted tables?” IMO, there are too many columns in census returns to display neatly in a typical A4 portrait report. I record census text as a simple column -separated literal transcription of what’s in the return, apart from a standard abbreviation of the...

Re: Pasting into Text from Source/Autotext

If you intend to use Ancestral Sources then you may wish to make your Text from Source format to match its format. Otherwise, you could end up with two different styles of Source record format. The same argument applies to other types of Source and not just Census records. Thanks, Mike - though in ...

Pasting into Text from Source/Autotext

I've finally upgraded to v.7, and one of the reasons for this was the possibility it held out of adding tabulated data to Text from Source fields. With the Lumped Source Splitter plugin (thanks, Mark) I've converted my lumped census sources into separate ones for each household, and am now looking a...

Re: GRO & FreeBMD sources - how to demerge B, M & D

All done now - many thanks to Mike for the advice and plug-in, and John for remembering about it. I successfully edited the GRO version to create one for FreeBMD, and after testing on a copy have applied both to my main project file. I'm still undecided about re-ordering the various bits of the cita...

Re: GRO & FreeBMD sources - how to demerge B, M & D

Thank you, Mike, I've now tried the plug-in on a copy of my project, and it works perfectly, changing the single GRO Index to three separate ones for B, M and D. However.... The specific Source titles required can be edited on lines 17 to 24 and include Baptism, Christening, Burial & Cremation. i.e....

Re: GRO & FreeBMD sources - how to demerge B, M & D

Interesting, John. Is this the thread it arose from: https://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=6803 It looks to me as though you and the OP there were looking for more or less the same as I'm asking about here, though the thread then changed tack and unless I missed it, there didn't seem to...

Re: GRO & FreeBMD sources - how to demerge B, M & D

Thanks, Mike, that's very helpful - particularly the explanation of what the expressions actually mean. I haven't fully decided how to proceed; my last post indicated a bit of hesitation, but I am now thinking it would after all be preferable to split the GRO Index source into three separate ones. H...

Re: GRO & FreeBMD sources - how to demerge B, M & D

Thanks - it's only relatively recently that I've started using Q1, Q2 etc in the fact dates, and my use of 'Mar qtr' etc in the citations goes back a lot further than that - in fact long before I started using Family Historian. And since my source has been 'GRO Index' I don't feel the need to repeat...

GRO & FreeBMD sources - how to demerge B, M & D

Up till now I've been using a single source for each of the GRO Index and FreeBMD, with no differentiation between Births, Deaths and Marriages. I'd now like to separate them out into GRO Birth Index, GRO Marriage Index etc etc. I thought I remembered seeing something about this here in the past cou...

Re: This week's active discussion topics in the FHUG Forums email

I can't remember if I've occasionally had duplicate copies in the past, but I definitely did yesterday.

Like Helen, I no longer have them to check the full headers, but I've confirmed from the email server logs at my end that two copies went through at 8:09:08 and 8:14:08.

Re: Ability to Change Type of Fact

As I'm still on v.6 I can't try out this plugin, but I did occasionally use the built-in function when I was using RootsMagic. I seem to remember that you invoked it not by selecting an individual and then picking from a list of facts, but by first highlighting the fact in the equivalent of the prop...

Do all Generations Source records use that same set of tags, or does it have templates that allow different tags in different Source records? Re: Bibliography Citation-specific Metafields

Here's my personal take on date of access... It's pointless because it's not actionable .... It's useful to have the year of publication because I can go to the appropriate library to find the 2003 edition of "My Life in Kenya", say... Which leads me back to the thought that a bibliography shouldn'...
