Re: England & Wales Probate Calendar images
I have a vague memory that Ancestry initially sourced their images from one of the London FHS's which had somehow got hold of either a set of index books or films of the same, but I can't remember the exact details (if I ever knew them).

Re: Census registration districts reference books
Since starting to use online census records I've never seen anything quite like the old index/overview pages that you've given - but thanks for the nostalgia hit ;) The same information is in the TNA Discovery catalogue (I found it by browsing), but arranged differently. For example, the equivalent ...

Re: Media
My understanding is that once the media is in FH it can only be renamed within the program but if it is on my "C" drive it can be remamed there. Once a file has been linked to FH the name of the corresponding Media record in FH can be changed, regardless of where the actual file is stored, but hat ...

Re: Amended GRO birth record
Thanks for that clarification - it explains a lot, but I'm still puzzled as to why jelv can't find the new name in the index. I suspect ordering the certificate may be the best way to work it out.

Re: Amended GRO birth record
Lastly, another thought just came to me. When I've seen notes like this in an index before, they've usually had a year. So rather than reading it as 4a 0465/S could it be 4a 04 from 65/S, ie Sep qtr 1965? Just wondering if anything came from this suggestion? (And in case 04 means something else, si...

Re: Amended GRO birth record
In that case, I think the best chance of finding out what happened is to order a copy of the certificate. It may be that if you use the original reference the GRO will convert it to an application under the new one, but it might be worth asking their advice first. It would, of course, be the later r...

Re: Amended GRO birth record
But you’ve found the surname using Freebmd! But from the original post I got the impression that a registration in the new name hadn't been found, and that a search in another quarter hadn't been tried: He is known by new surname, so I have that as the primary name and his original as an alternate ...

Re: Amended GRO birth record
I’d check the official GRO website, for both entries, may make more sense. Except that you can't search the GRO site without a surname. I suggested FreeBMD because you can use just the date and reference (and district if you wish) so as to see what names come up. At FreeBMD you can of course follow...

Re: Amended GRO birth record
An 'S' in an annotation usually refers to the September quarter - presumably the next following. If you go to FreeBMD and search with no names but just the district and reference 4a 465 (or 0465) in the next September, does anything useful come up? On the face of it, it looks more like a re-registra...

Re: Text from source - tables in reports
Selecting wasn't the problem, but going back to it now, I might have cracked it: with the text selected, type in the required size, then rather than clicking Apply, hit Enter on your keyboard. In fact by doing that I've even managed to get it to accept half sizes, e.g. 8.5. Thanks for the inspiratio...

Re: Text from source - tables in reports
The lack of response seems to indicate that this topic isn't of great interest to anyone else, but for one last throw of the dice, I've refined the settings and come up with what I think are slightly better results. For all of these I changed the font in report options to Times New Roman 9pt (previo...

Re: Text from source - tables in reports
I've now managed to produce some sample tables on the lines of what I was suggesting. I concentrated on the England & Wales 1911 and 1921 censuses, as these are among the more demanding UK ones. (I accept that this method will not work as is for US censuses where a lot more data was collected, but i...

Re: Allow reports to split very wide tables dynamically
I've been thinking about this kind of issue recently - see 21275|Text from source - tables in reports , where Nick kindly gave a link to this thread. I agree that wide tables have been a problem, but is splitting the only solution? When a table is too wide there seem to be 3 possibilities with the c...

Re: Text from source - tables in reports
Trying desperately to keep my thread on track, I've now done some experiments relating to tables and the way the average user might want to use them in text from source. But first, thank you Helen for No. Syntax documentation is here From that I now know that the columns in a table (in text from sou...

Re: Text from source - tables in reports
Mike, I suspect OP wants to see the raw text underneath the rich text, that you can can get at by editing the file directly, or (for Notes created from autotext) by using the method here: https://fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=20894#p127234 to get this view Screenshot 2022-12-11 083123.jpg ...

Re: Text from source - tables in reports
From my original post: 1. Has anyone tried to calculate the optimum width of a table in whatever units FH uses, so as to take up the available space and no more, and thus avoid the need for shrinking? And, related to this: where can custom autotext templates be found, in order to view or edit this v...

Re: Text from source - tables in reports
For me, the question is "what will I do with the reports?".... And 99% of the time I'm not really worried about how tables appear in reports either. It's just that recently I needed to produce a pdf report to send to someone else and was a bit embarrassed about how they appeared so I ended up not i...

Re: Text from source - tables in reports
Thanks, Nick - quite a bit of food for thought in that thread. So far I've been trying to copy the layout of certificates and census returns, including long lines of text or line feeds, but I'm aware that long lines in particular are part of the problem. I'm beginning to wonder whether in the intere...

Text from source - tables in reports
I know this subject has come up from time to time, but I couldn't find a previous discussion to add these thoughts to. Re: Sort order for Place Records
I've rarely needed to enter US states, and the difficult to spell ones even more rarely, so I don't feel I can offer much in relation to the workflow in the cases you identify. However, based on the way I (mostly) do things, does the following help for English villages, churches and other places of ...
