Re: Census Dates
Thanks for all the further thoughts. Adrian - your thinking is very similar to mine regarding applying census dates to occupations, residences etc. Bill - thanks for the reminder that an address in a census isn't necessarily the usual residence. Mike - if (or as seems likely, when) I make the change...

Re: Census Dates
Arthur I would correct the dates to the proper one if it was my data. Yes, but the whole point of my question is, which is the proper one? (I may now be a bit nearer the answer - see my previous post. This one from Valkrider appeared while I was writing that, so sorry it looked as though I was igno...

Re: Census Dates
Thank you, Tim, that's all very helpful. I see that the householder's form mentions only the night of Sunday 30th March , as does the extract from the legislation. Monday 31st is the day for the enumerator to visit and record the information. That, in fact, is more or less the way I've handled US ce...

Re: Census Dates
I'm aware that in the US people were rarely enumerated on the official census day, but thankfully (for me) that's an issue I haven't had to deal with much. What's bothering me is that for many years I've been following the Fitzhugh approach and recording the Monday dates, while at the same time real...

Re: Adding census dates day and month
This question of exactly which date to use for a census is one that I've been wondering about.
Since this current topic is more about using FH, I've started a new one on the Research board - Census Dates (15186) and would welcome opinions there.

Census Dates
In the course of this topic 15153|Adding census dates day and month on the General Usage board, the question has arisen of which date to actually record for a census. This is something I've been wondering about recently, and since it's not just about using FH, I thought I'd start a topic here. The f...

Re: speed up multiple Citation/ Source selection
Arthur, AS does NOT force you to use Fact Witness Roles , and has options for Custom Facts , Associated Person , Notes , etc, as alternatives. Yes, I understand that - and it was implicit in what Jim wrote anyway. But since data entry in FH is already a lot quicker than in my previous program (main...

Re: speed up multiple Citation/ Source selection
Thanks for the comments, Jim. I'll take a look at the Clone Any Record plugin, as I might find it a bit easier than Automatic Source Citations. Interesting thoughts re AS - I too resist using witnesses, and have my own custom facts for them and for things like registration (a fact I use for the pers...

Re: speed up multiple Citation/ Source selection
Jim, Like you, I tend to copy/modify existing sources, instead of creating a new one from scratch. The method I use also enables me to see if the citation has already been used before, with no need to create a new one! (I miss the copy as new facility from FTM, which the steps below go some way to ...

Re: Skeleton Tree for Ancestry
I agree with Mike and Jane on this. I'm not certain, but I think that even if the website marks people as Private, their details will still be in any Gedcom file that you allow others to download. With the benefit of hindsight, I have one more comment about Places in this kind of skeleton tree. Ance...

Re: Skeleton Tree for Ancestry
However, there have been a number of recent discussions where minimal data is required to obtain Hints & Hits or in your case DNA matches, so maybe the Plugin needs more options to remove data than I first imagined. I agree, this kind of thing does seem to have come up a few times. Please don't do ...

Re: Skeleton Tree for Ancestry
You need to understand how Place fields and Place records work. Unlike other records (that are linked by Record Id ) the Place fields and Place records are coupled by the place-name. So if all the Place records are deleted, then all the equivalent Place field names remain. What Place records add is...

Re: Skeleton Tree for Ancestry
Thanks for your comments, Mike. If this skeleton export to Ancestry is something you need to perform repeatedly, then one way to simplify the process is for you to write your own dedicated Plugin combining elements from the existing published Plugins . I don't expect now to need to do this again, bu...

Re: Skeleton Tree for Ancestry
Just saw this thread. I wanted a similar tree for Ancestry and didn't like how some things were showing up on their site. With Mike Tate's help I came up with a plan which as he pointed out is documented in the knowledge base. I created a step by step procedure that I use which I attached to the th...

Re: Skeleton Tree for Ancestry
Thanks, Colin, that does sound relatively simple, although I don't at present have a CSV to Gedcom converter. However, part of me wants to resist this because I don't think what I want is so peculiar, and it ought to be possible using the tools I already have. You could probably argue that it should...

Re: Skeleton Tree for Ancestry
Ancestry trees without sources don't inspire a great deal of confidence In reality Ancestry trees with many sources often refer only to sources in Ancestry's own databases, and have been linked by people who accept Ancestry 'hints' unthinkingly. In my experience a tree someone has uploaded to Ances...

Re: What's the Mother's Name?
My first thought was Harriet too, but if you count the strokes, there are two between the "i" and the "t", which don't look at all like an "e". Added to which, an Anna/Hannah confusion could account for the mistake in the first letter, which would be less likely with Harriet.

Re: What's the Mother's Name?
My best guess would be Hannah. It looks like whoever wrote it first wrote A (cf Ann below), then corrected it. Possibly he thought it was Anna, and was then put right.

Re: Skeleton Tree for Ancestry
Thank you for your thoughts so far. Skeleton Tree for Ancestry
I've recently done an Ancestry DNA test, and to facilitate matches they advise creating a tree on their site. I don't want a public tree, but simply a private one that shows a basic outline of my ancestors as a basis for discussion. I don't have any shared facts or witnesses, nor am I going to uploa...

I must admit I am confused. Whichever way I navigate through the pages, it ends up here: https://www.tracker-software.com/product/pdf-xchange-editor/download?fileid=549 and that page demands $43.50 single user licence for PDF-XChange Editor . (The Plus version costs even more.) Its introduction at ...

Re: Property Box Facts tab - a Place problem
Thanks, Mike, for the thoughts re in and at . Long term I know it would be best to get more consistency in the way I record Places and Addresses, but I'm still pondering the pros and cons of the two approaches. I'm probably leaning more towards separating them out, which would obviously help with th...

Re: Property Box Facts tab - a Place problem
Thank you, Jane - I was away from the computer. This has reminded me of a related matter: I've found that some of my sentences use in when I'd prefer them to have at . To me, "in Leeds, WRY" sounds better than "at Leeds, WRY" , but with an address, "at 300 Leeds Road" is better than "in 300 Leeds Ro...

Re: Property Box Facts tab - a Place problem
The Main tab of the Property Box can be customised by clicking the gear wheel in its toolbar and selecting Customise Data Entry... , but the Facts tab is done differently. This confused me initially too, and getting to the options is a bit more complex. From the menu item Tools select Fact Types... ...
