Re: Probate Records
Trying to interpret the numbers, the first two digits appear to be the year of probate or administration, and from comparing entries, the next two digits might indicate which probate office was involved - though you get that from the text anyway. As has already been said, you'd probably need to get ...

Some people find it useful to export a GEDCOM file from Family Historian and view it with an app on a tablet or smartphone.

Re: Sources, Citations and Methods
Does the topic 15823|Sheer number of sources! have anything useful? Several of us put forward our thoughts on shortening the list of sources in reports, and as usual there was a range of opinions covering both Method 1 and Method 2. Most of us probably ended up just as convinced as before that we we...

Re: Interpretation of 'Legal' italic writing in Wills etc?
To a large extent it's a matter of practice. With wills of this period the style and form of letters was fairly consistent, and there are also a lot of standard (and usually repetitive) legal phrases, so once you get used to these it's not too much of a challenge. You can get books on palaeography, ...

Re: Sheer number of sources!
If the sources are from only a handful of Method 2 Source records, then the technique you proposed earlier might help, where one Citation holds several Where within Source references, or less rigorously literally says something like " See the Marriage & Death Certificates of all his children. " Tha...

Sorry - not sure what you mean here. I do have just the one occupation fact, with address attached, and a date range for it. The question is how to attach the 30-40 register entries that support it.ColeValleyGirl wrote:In that circumstance I'd consider whether the extra 'occupation' facts were needed at all.

Re: Sheer number of sources!
One further thought about the idea of combining sources/citations into a single item: This is admittedly a rather extreme example, but one of my ancestors worked as a tailor for about 55 years in the same place. In that time he and his wife had 20 children; 12 married, and 11 died and were buried. I...

Re: Sheer number of sources!
Arthurk, you make a good point that the global name of the document should appear in the Sources list. So, I have been experimenting with the Ibid. scenario and it does not work very well for me. It seems that Ibid. only appears in the Sources list if the Citations for the same Method 2 source are ...

Re: Sheer number of sources!
As per my examples, I don't include the global name of the document as it appears in the Report Sources list. This is where the Source record long Title and Short Title can be very useful. The long Title can include such as " Kildwick Parish Registers " and the Short Title just " Baptism of... ". T...

Re: Sheer number of sources!
The use of Ibid. is a necessity not an advantage with Method 2 to avoid repeating the 'lumped' Source Title . It actually adds the repetitive Ibid. prefix that is unnecessary with 'splitter' Method 1 , because each Source Title is unique. Compare your Sources list with my Sources list that does NOT...

Re: Sheer number of sources!
Thanks for your further thoughts on this, Mike. Logically you are of course correct that each document needs to be quoted, and in theory the number of items in the source list will correspond to the number of documents. However... Method 2 sourcing allows for the use of Ibid. , which reduces the amo...

From memory you have to have a certificate and these cost anything from £10 per annum (1st year price rising to £24) for individuals or £24 rising to £55. These are from a low-end provider. To get certificates from a top provider can cost £100s or even more, per year! Having changed my web hosting ...

Unless I am mistaken, arthurk has disabled many of the tick options in the Report > Options > Sources tab. The top three options immediately under Show Source Citations are probably ticked. Re: Sheer number of sources!
I've no doubt FH can cope very well with a large number of Method 1 (split) sources, but I still hesitate to convert my Method 2 (lumped) sources, largely because of the amount of repetition it would create in reports. This is a screenshot of the sources in an Individual Summary Report for a chap I ...

Hi Stephen I suspect you may receive more technical advice, but I think I do more source lumping than many others, and I do have quite a lot of sympathy with that approach. However, it's necessary to be clear about exactly what belongs where. BMD certificates is actually one area where I change to s...

Two options:
1. In the View menu select Record Links... and then open up each record in turn to find where the relevant place is.
2. Use the Where Used Record Links plugin (it works like a query) for a list showing the exact fields.

Arthur, if you do decide to adjust your Census dates to the Sundays , then follow the advice in 15153|Adding census dates day and month and use the Ancestral Sources 'Census Date Check' technique that is far more efficient than the Search and Replace Plugin in this special case.
