Re: Addresses used with a particular place
Thanks for that, Mike. Writing a plugin is beyond me at present, and getting to grips with the language would take a disproportionate amount of time, I think. Meanwhile, I've found that the existing Address Summary Report plugin can also act as a workaround, though a rather different one. It produce...

Addresses used with a particular place
I'm wondering whether there is any way to show a list of Addresses associated with Places . One place I'm thinking about is in the Places property box . For most of my places, the Main tab has a large and unused Notes field; or an extra tab listing just the addresses might be an alternative. However...

Re: Connecting to Restored rootsweb hosted sites -
It's an easy mistake - 'siteuser' would seem a more normal term to use, so on a quick look through the settings you could easily get it wrong. It's a while since I did mine, but I have a vague memory that I might have got it wrong first time too.
(You see - 'vague' happens to me sometimes too

Re: Connecting to Restored rootsweb hosted sites -
I've just checked the FTP settings for my Rootsweb site, and it looks as though you have a typo.
The host name is sitesuser.rootsweb.com with an 's' in the middle. I've checked this with my FTP program (not Filezilla), and it connected with no problem.

Re: Question on registration info in Help > About
When I changed my computer a couple of months ago I checked with Calico Pie whether I needed to re-register, as I wasn't sure whether completing the registration box would have any effect on the working of the program. They said 'Please click "I do not wish to register" as we already have your detai...

Re: What occupation? (Scottish 1911 census)
The first one looks to me to have 'e' as its second letter, which makes me a bit doubtful about it being Loom. The second one does look like Lens, and I wonder if it means the person did some very fine work with lace which required the use of a lens? While looking into this briefly, I spotted a weav...

Re: Apostrophes
If we're being pedantic, you might wish to review your use of the full stop in "St. Neots". American usage would include it, but the British norm is to omit it, as the town council has done, on the grounds that "St" includes the first and last letters of the word abbreviated. See the guidance on thi...

Re: Website created with FH software - can I include that in a WYSIWYG Website software programme
I'm not familiar with the Serif product either, but I found an online version of the Help file: https://community.serif.com/appresources/WPX7/Help/en-gb/webplus.htm In the left hand menu, select Setting up Sites and Pages > Opening an existing site and at the bottom of that page there's a section he...

Re: Posts not being marked as read.
I've noticed the same as John, with Chrome in Windows 7. I used to come in every day at the FHUG home page https://www.fhug.org.uk/ and if Active Forum Topics was showing anything unread I would go there (https://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/search.php?search_id=active_topics) and read them. The home page ...

Re: Electoral Roll - Dates Taken
The British Library has a guide entitled "Parliamentary Constituencies and their Registers since 1832" . This lists all the ones they hold, but it also has a very useful introduction which deals with questions like dates, who was entitled to register etc. You can download it as a free pdf from https...

Re: Find My Past free weekend
It's not the official GRO death index, but the one produced by Wilmington Millenium, which I think has been available at Ancestry for some time too. The Wilmington Millenium database is called "United Kingdom Deaths 2007-2017", as opposed to the GRO's "England & Wales Deaths 1837-2007". I understand...

Re: Converting .uds to GEDCOM
I agree, it is all a bit daunting. However, a lot of it is about one-time tweaking of the file to be done as you import it to FH, and it does appear to be a step-by-step guide. Maybe it all becomes clearer as you actually work through it. But when you do, make sure you take a backup of the file firs...

Re: Converting .uds to GEDCOM
Welcome to the group! .uds is the extension used by the old Generations program. As you say, at one time it was produced by Sierra, though I think they sold the rights to someone else and not long afterwards it was discontinued. There's a page about transferring data from Generations here: how_to:im...

Re: Generations 4.5 to FH6 Queries
Many many years ago I switched from Generations to Legacy (and then from that to RootsMagic, and now FH). Like you I was having problems with data attached to the wrong people etc, and news of its imminent demise made me decide to make the move. One thing I can remember about making the move is a tr...

Re: FH6 - To-do lists
Thanks - this didn't actually work for me, though that might be because I tweaked it to use my Research fact (which has Auto Create Note) rather than my To Do (which doesn't). However, since I'm currently busy with a fascinating piece of research, and I'm quite happy to continue using the Fast Add m...

Re: FH6 - To-do lists
In short, if you create the custom tab for Research and To Do you do not need those facts in the Add Fact shortcut menu, because it is quicker to open the custom tab. The custom Research Tab shows these items whether you've added them or not, but the Auto-Create Note custom labels don't appear unle...

What you've described is more or less exactly the way I did it. For the record, and in case it helps anyone else, here's a screenshot of my Research fact (my To Do is similar, but with Research I can explain how I've developed it further): ak-resfact1.jpg I am not sure what you meant by "These consi...

Re: Hyphenated Surnames
OK, thanks, it looks like I've probably encountered some aspect of that issue. As I said before, this question of hyphenating surnames isn't one that I've needed to look at in FH, and I was only offering a suggestion based on what had worked for me elsewhere. As it doesn't seem to work in FH at pres...

Re: Hyphenated Surnames
Very strange, have you tried picking the characters from the character map. I don't have Windows 7 available any more to check it on. I can get an en-dash either by typing Alt+0150 or by copying and pasting from the character map, but this non-breaking hyphen eludes me. I can, as I said, get a hyph...

Re: Hyphenated Surnames
You can add any characters you like to Configure Language & Accent Characters . Initially you may want to use the Windows Character Map utility to select & copy, but once added to Configure Language & Accent Characters via its cog icon they are permanently customised for future use. e.g Hold down t...

Re: Hyphenated Surnames
Yes you can add any characters, by editing using "Configure Language and Accent Characters" under the gear wheel on the Property box. Thanks, Jane - but can you add characters without invoking the character map? I couldn't find the non-breaking hyphen in there. Mike - I note your warnings, so maybe...

Re: Hyphenated Surnames
Edit to add – (Alt num key 8211) works really well as it looks a lot like a hyphen. Another edit: If you hold down the hyphen key the extended character option pops up and you can select the second character to get the 8211 character. I'm not sure if I'm looking at the right kind of list, but while...

Re: FH6 - To-do lists
Just to expand a bit on what I eventually did with this, as I didn't use the off-the-peg solutions: I wanted to have some way of recording research that I had already done, and what was still to do, so I created two new fact types - Research and To Do . These consist of Notes only. When creating the...
