Re: Relationships
Thanks for all the pointers, Mike - told you I was still trying to learn. Anyway, I've spent a while experimenting, and now have something that seems to work for me. I'll run through it in case anyone else feels like doing something similar. I didn't actually try the All Pool Relatives Except Partne...

Re: Relationships
IMO it is in general not possible to differentiate paternal and maternal ancestors, and this is especially so if ancestral 'cousins' from both sides are married. Then via different routes, everyone is on both the paternal and maternal lines. That is why the All Pool Relatives Except Partner Ancesto...

Re: Relationships
I have an expression =IsAncestorOf(%INDI%,Field(FileRoot(),'INDI.~FATH>')) which produces a diagram icon for direct paternal ancestors (and a corresponding one for maternal). I think I knew before I asked that finding an expression for ALL paternal relations was a bit much! I think we need some mor...

Re: Relationships
Now I'm wondering, is there any way to distinguish paternal/maternal lines as well? Someone might have a more sophisticated answer, but that's what I do with the Custom ID - up to a point. It's included in the code I posted on 23 July, 17:31 (UK). All my direct ancestors from grandparents backwards...

Re: Relationships
I'm on a different tack from Bill, so apologies for seeming to butt in, but it does all stem from the original question. This thread has emboldened me to improve my Property Box caption to include a number of variables. In case anyone would like to copy or adapt it, this is the code for the whole of...

Re: Relationships
Thanks - and hopefully someone else will be able to explain.
I'm not trying to be awkward, just wanting to understand, so when a term doesn't conform to what's described in Help I'm curious to know why it still works. Also why there are two versions - the simple one and the one with 4 parameters.

The different parts are defined in the Help under the Relationship function. https://www.family-historian.co.uk/help/fh7/hh_start.htm#function_relationship.html Thanks, Bill. Go to Tools > Preferences and select Property Box and then Captions and add this to the first box: [=Relationship(FileRoot(),,TEXT,1)] Thanks - but please could you (or someone else) explain what the different parts are actually doing? Re: Export Gedcom File to The Genealogist
What David has not said is that Treeview is s separate program supported by The Genealogist. True, but it's also the name they give to the online tree builder, though I assume there's some kind of inbuilt integration. There are some video tutorials which appear to relate to the online tree product,...

Re: Replacing Pre-Existing Facts as part of RE-DO using AS
I don't claim to be an expert, but I did migrate from RM (v.6) to FH about 6 years ago. My feeling at that time was that I should get to grips with FH on its own terms first, before considering whether AS would be of benefit. And I still haven't used AS. Like you, I used 'lumped' sources in RM - min...

Does the thread Option to not create an image cache (21654) help?
It describes a setting you can make which inhibits the creation of the thumbcache.dat file - is that something you might have done?

Re: Having an issue getting full place name during Geocoding
Gary, yes, Google Maps needs a credit card. It looks like Bing Maps just needs a Microsoft Account and Bing Maps API Key to use a range of free services, but I got distracted before getting very far. I've never got round to any kind of mapping or geocoding in FH, and I don't know when I ever will, ...

Re: Does one use muktiple sources for same event?
In fact a GRO certificate may even be a tertiary source: I'd call a GRO certificate a derivative source (a copy of an original, or as you point out, possibly a copy of a copy of the original).... As you surmised, I was using tertiary in the sense of a copy of a copy of the original, but maybe, as A...

Re: Does one use muktiple sources for same event?
Should have picked up this when you said it -- why do you treat the GRO marriage index citation a separate source to the Parish Register entry when there isn't a separate marriage certificate created by a registrar for CoE marriages? Arguably, it is a separate source, as the GRO Certificate is not ...

Re: Autotext Rich Text table formatting glitches
Thanks, Mike - not just me then. However, because I dislike flabby code I removed most of the font tags, so mine looks like this: <b>Civil Parish of Leeds, Municipal Borough of Leeds: (address) (RG12/xxxx fo-- p--)</b> <table="1650|850|850|700|700|2000|1750|1000"> <row> <fs="-1"><b>Name | Rel. to He...

Autotext Rich Text table formatting glitches
I've devised my own versions of autotext to use with text from source, especially with censuses. These have a default font of Tahoma size 9, but for most of the text, which includes a table, the font is set at size 8. In the table the top line column headers are bold, but I haven't used any text col...

Re: Option to not create an image cache
Mike - please could you clarify what you mean by "unused" and "redundant" thumbnails? Do they relate to images that have been removed from the project, or does the thumbnail cache keep refreshing itself but without deleting duplicates? As my cache is steadily growing, though not yet alarmingly big, ...
