Re: 1939 Register on Find My Past

It seems as though my reading of The National Archives research guide (see post 18th Nov 2015) was correct. As from 16th February 2016 the 1939 Register will form part of the FMP subscription at no extra cost.

Re: Adoption?

Is the birth certificate a full extraction or one in shortened form? Did you obtain the certificate or was it one in your grandfather's possession? It was common for people at that time to carry a short form of birth certificate to save any questions!

Re: My Heritage - A Warning!

Peter, have a look at the following link to the Financial Ombudsman which may give you a way of reclaiming the amount that has been debited. There are several cases quoted so you may find one that is similar to your own situation. Your first complaint must be to the Debit Card provider but do be abs...

Re: Putting your research online on your own website.

Thanks for sharing this information and I will certainly give Genealone a try. My one concern with a program that uses MySql and PHP is that I will no longer get contact from those people who find a relative on my website. My understanding is that they cannot be found with a Google search as the nam...

Re: TMG import - what doesn't work?

As a fairly recent convert from TMG perhaps it might be helpful if I let you know my experience. My TMG data was in fairly simple format so the conversion went without a hitch. However the one thing that I did have to rethink was the way I had recorded census information particularly as I wanted to ...

Re: 1939 Register on Find My Past

Interestingly the National Archives research guide for the 1939 Register in Section 3 states "This service is pay per view only at present . However, you can view these records online free of charge at The National Archives in Kew." There has been some speculation that at some time in the future tha...

Re: FH platforms

Whilst I respect Don's opinion, I am a former TMG user who has made the change to FH. I know that there are/were many TMG users who never used the software to its full capabilities and I count myself among them. For us the change is less painful and I have found that it has given me the opportunity ...

Re: PDF Text Highlighting

Have just been having another play with Foxit Reader 7 and you can highlight a rectangular area by going to Comment - Drawing - Area Highlight . The standard colour is bright yellow with 100% opacity but this can be altered to your own choice through the properties box. It does also generate a comme...

There is a video from adobe on the approach you need with a scanned document that has been converted to PDF - have a look at http://tv.adobe.com/watch/acrobat-xi-tips-tricks/how-to-edit-a-scanned-pdf-file/ to see if that will help. I am getting the same problem as you with Foxit Reader and Nitro Rea...

Re: English Dates on Windows 10 system

Thanks for mentioning this, John as I upgraded my laptop today and I would have fallen into the same trap. When Windows 10 first opens it mentions settings and highlights that the language is ENG - it is only by clicking ENG that you find it has defaulted to US ENG and has not picked up the original...

Re: Focus Window display of Spouses of children & siblings

Having been a user of TMG I can understand what Evelyn is looking for. However, I think that it is unlikely that it can be implemented easily in FH as there is a basic difference in the way that the two programs have been set up. The screen shot provided illustrates this, as the desktop in TMG could...

Re: Census Tags/ Events TMG to FH

Due to the way that TMG recorded census data and witnesses, I think that it is difficult to find a quick and easy solution. There are other threads on the Forum which may throw some light on the subject as well as in the Knowledge Base but after a lot of thought I decided re-enter all my census entr...

Re: Repeat Previous Data Entry

As a recent migrant from TMG I was at first worried about the absence of the F3 function that I had become used to. However it has become less of a worry as I am using Nick Walker's wonderful Ancestral Sources that eliminates the need for a repeat key. Once you get used to the auto-fill for Places a...

Re: Alternate Names

As a relatively new user of Ancestral Sources I have resurrected this old post. The opportunity to use Alternate Names, especially with Census entries, would be appreciated as my family name has many variants dreamed up by the enumerator. I find that I have to alter the Autotext entry on numerous oc...

Re: Incorrect lifespan dates in Focus window

As a newcomer to FH from TMG, I think that you have just given me a Eureka Moment, Adrian! I have been puzzling over how to record multiple events, having been used to the TMG primary and other events. Your explanation of what you would do to record a death does make complete sense and I can also se...

Re: Source Citation Methods 1 & 2

Many thanks Mike and Jim for your response. I think that I will take on the suggestion to convert to Method 1 but as I expect that to be a slow process, I will give myself a target of end of 2015!! At the same time I will reduce my paper files by attaching images and as I have already tested out Anc...

Re: Source Citation Methods 1 & 2

May I ask another question relating to this subject as a newbie to FH, having been with TMG for nearly 20 years? When I first started, Method 2 was the logical way in TMG to record and cite sources as there was no problem in the citation being attached to anyone enumerated in the relative census. Li...

Re: Rearrange Address and Place Parts Plugin

Thanks Mike. I have used Method 2 as this seems the quickest way to achieve what I was looking for. Most of my duplicates are in column 1 so highlighting them with the filter and then substituting 3 in your example with 1 works a treat. I thought that it must be possible but couldn't get my head aro...

For some reason I have a lot of instances where the place name is duplicated, appearing both in the address fields and the place fields. Would it be possible to enhance the plugin...

I think, Mike, that we all have the same problem which has been acknowledged - See Jane's note above on 13th December. All we want to know is a possible timescale, unless you are suggesting that a flurry of messages to support will speed the process.

An interesting list which seems to have one glaring error and one big omission. It indicates that Family Search is only useful in the USA, which it is not, and has completely ignored FreeBMD which must be one of the most used resources in the UK! I am sure that others can come up with other sites th...
