Re: FH platforms
I can answer some of these questions - FH does not understand TMG split memos - it brings the entire text (including the || splitting signs) across as a single Note. As far as I know, the only way to address this is to manually split them yourself into multiple Notes (which FH does allow) and then c...

Re: FH platforms
To TMG-Refugee - a lot of far more detailed answers to the questions you pose are available in the 'TMG Refugees' website and mailing list. You can get access through the TMG-REFUGEES list admin, whose admin email is TMG-REFUGEES-admin@rootsweb.com list address: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/in...

Re: Witness in a Census Fact
Rich, the FH+AS method of entering census data effectively creates unique entries for each person associated with the event. As you have found, this means the sort of 'aggregation' of roles within a single sentence that we are used to doing in TMG is impossible. At least I think it is impossible - I...

Re: New Project from TMG
Dick, I'm not sure why you are having any problems running TMG on Wondows 10 - it runs fine in Win10 (better in some respects) and in fact runs across a broader range of Windows versions than most genie programs. Some people have found they have to TMG via 'run as administrator' for Win10, but I hav...

Re: Importing citation details
I would have to differ on the comment that It is also disappointing that at least one TMG Surety is not transferred to FH Assessment. As far as I can tell, all my TMG citations that have a TMG Surety end up with an FH Assessment. Not one I can understand though, but as I've said before I have asked ...

Re: Importing citation details
If I can just make some corrections here. The field use in TMG is meant to be as follows (and this is from TMG Help): Citation Detail is used for more specific information in the citation; for example, page numbers, dates of correspondence, etc. The length of this field is unlimited. Citation Memo: ...

Re: Census Tags/ Events TMG to FH
There seem to be 2 points under discussion so far - the first one is easy to deal with - as Mike pointed out, any customisation of FH applies to all projects under its control. In TMG, one can have multiple Projects, under which one can have multiple DataSets (each of which is more akin to an FH pro...

Re: Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
Just to clarify, there is no difference in the TMG program between the US and UK editions - neither is 'simpler' than the other. I speak as a UK Edition user since it was first made available in 2002 (TMG 5.00). The UK edition uses a 'UK English' by default (some slightly different spelling) and has...

Re: Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
Glad you've sorted that one now Evelyn. With the census tags now identified properly as CENS, FH will import them as census (rather than misc. events of type census). It will also handle the witness roles now properly (I know, I've been through this change myself). So then Gedstar will also get the ...

Re: Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
While I appreciate that plugins and post-processing the FH GEDCOM file can fix things, I'm always in favour of going back to the root info in TMG and fixing things there - that way you don't have to keep fixing the FH data if you do a re-import. But this statement worries me - "Every single census t...

Re: Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
I don't see any need to de-witness any events before (or after) transfer to FH - as of 6.0.4 FH does a reasonable job of transfer from TMG and now appears to be identifying and storing most witness info correctly. I can't agree with Mike that everybody at a census is a Principal and shouldn't be cla...

Re: Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
First, there is no need to use an FH plugin to convert Evelyn's ex-TMG census entries to the proper GEDCOM identity. Go back to TMG and make sure all the TMG census tags have a GEDCOM ID of CENS. Having a GEDCOM ID of CEN1871 or somesuch is of little value, as (a) it's non-standard and (b) the year ...

Re: TMG to FH custom Facts (Tags)
Evely, On re-reading my post I found too much of a GEDCOM flavour, and I can see you may have mis-interpreted it to mean it applies to a GEDCOM import from TMG, which was not my intent (I've never used it). So I DO mean the FH direct import, and if you read it from that viewpoint I hope it makes mor...

Re: TMG to FH custom Facts (Tags)
Evelyn, I too have a Travel tag in TMG, which FH is happily accepting and converting to an FH Travel event. In FH this is stored in the GEDCOM as a 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Travel set of tags, and the rest all comes across OK (bar fixing the sentences of course). If yours are being interpreted by FH as an Immi...

Re: GEDCOM Criticisms
Well I'm not sure it's 'most of the errors'. The following gives an analysis of only some of GEDCOM's stupidities (before highlighting programming issues): http://www.tamurajones.net/GEDCOMCharacterEncodings.xhtml and while this mainly supports your programming stupidities argument, the bit on CONC ...

Re: GEDCOM Criticisms
Yes, Adrian, its an extremely large hobby horse, and probably not worth the effort of trying to ride! But to say GEDCOM is a standard worries me (it fails any logical test of such a definition) and I also fear it is not other programmers who are at fault - just one small example: the GEDCOM specific...

GEDCOM Criticisms
If I can just revert back up to AdrianBruce's commentary on 'Witness' in 12468|Is V5 to V6 upgrade worthwhile? - firstly, I wouldn't blame the name on TMG's use of it for marriage witnesses (especially as in TMG you can have a witness to any event). Second, I think the origin is in GEDCOM, which use...

Re: TMG Import & extra code
Any TMG user should be able to tell you that these codes are not at all 'unusual' - they are entirely normal formatting codes within TMG template sentences and Memos (which become FH Notes). A more complete list can be found in the TMG Help, but it will include the following usages, which will also ...

Re: V6 Fails on TMG direct import
Depending on the range of TMG features you use, I would urge caution - there are still significant problems with the TMG import - 17 of my bug reports have still not been addressed, and I'm sure I could find more if I spent more time on it. The biggest problem (true of all programs trying to import ...

Re: FH TMG Direct import issues following V6.0.1
I'd agree with mitchep's analysis -I reported most of the same problems to Calico yesterday. There are also other issues, like: 1. FH doesn't carry over TMG's 'last edited' date 2. FH doesn't honour TMG 'Primary image' annotation on media 3. witness info dropped from some events 4. Individual Census...

Re: V6 Fails on TMG direct import
You may be one of the lucky ones - I think the majority of TMG direct importers fall in the 'witness hangs v6' camp - certainly I do, at about 10% of witnesses supposedly processed. v5 is useless to me as it doesn't import much, and v6 is just useless. Calico Pie need to get a fix out quickly, or TM...

Re: upgrade from version 5 to version 6
So given I bought a full copy of v5 in late Nov, and registered with Calico for a free upgrade, how does one make it happen? Anyone know? All I get offered in the store is the full purchase price and I don't see any way of claiming the 'discount' - and the link for claiming it again has disappeared ...
