Repercussions of publishing DNA on Genealogy sites
Interesting article in The Times today. In the 1970's and 80's a man "raped, murdered and abducted his way across California" and was never caught. Last year investigators took a new look at the crimes and, as part of this, uploaded the suspects DNA to a genealogy database. There they identified a n...

Re: Birth, Marriage and Death information
Lorna mentioned earlier in respect of the GRO ".....Their birth index includes mother's maiden name (which is not included prior to 1911 in other indexes)....". I have noticed an increasing number of the FMP pre-1911 Birth records (GRO transcripts) also have the Mothers Maiden name in them - this se...

Re: Census, 1939 Register, Electoral Roll
I would respectfully suggest that this was not a case of correcting the database but updating it!. Whichever, the TNA website states "....Findmypast.co.uk subscribers can request a check of the closed records free of charge and if successful, the record will be made available via the online service....

Perhaps also worth noting Mike is that System Restore is, for some oddball reason, disabled on new installs of Windows 10 (certainly on my Win 10 Pro 64 Bit version), and although I regularly turn it back on, it gets disabled again when the "major" semi-annual updates occur!

Re: Ideas for Naming and sorting custom queries?
Have to say, I do reuse some queries and have them named accordingly (eg "Individuals with Fact =" and "Family with Fact =") so that I can go in and modify them to meet a current need. This came about because, as Evelyn says, you end with a very long list of Custom Queries if you save every one, and...

Re: Problem with FMP Rejected Hints
I've looked back through some of the old forum posts and have found reference to something in the KB which indicates that rejecting hints using the Reject button does not result in these hints going in to your Reject list but instead they just "disappear". It's a pain, but perhaps I'll have to stop ...

Problem with FMP Rejected Hints
Just wondering if anybody else has encountered the issue I have found this morning. In essence, the FMP Hints screen offered eight records - a number of these were quite obviously not "good" links (Death record dated before persons Birth, etc), so I hit the Reject button without even taking the Revi...

Re: Phantom census notes
I'd suggest check the Census Template Editor for 1861 in AS. If Column Type is set to Generic and the tick box for "Record even if ...." is ticked then you might have the answer.

Can't say that I have had any problems with "missing" data in the auto text, although it's always been indicated that the auto-text results will frequently need some manual work before saving. What pieces are missing?

Re: Marriages
As Mike indicated, there are no spaces for the Register Date and Registrar. The latter could be input using the Associated Individuals (Witnesses) processing and both can be manually added (in AS) to the Auto-Text output. As far as as which is the best template for non-Scottish Marriages, it really ...

Re: Importing an Ancestry GEDCOM file to FH 6.2.7 with missing media links
Phil - I also use 1&1 for my website (generated via GedSite) and, originally, FileZilla for FTP but the latter also started causing me problems last last year so I switched to CyberDuck. Found this to actually be much faster than FileZilla and very easy to setup.

Re: Where is Ancestral Sources
AS is primarily for capture of Census data plus Births, Marriages, Deaths and Burials. Depending on which options you set in the AS configuration (and, in some instances, the answers you give to prompts when data is being saved), some additional Facts can optionally be created in FH - e.g. related B...

Re: clean install of Windows 10
The Installation Archive is very sound advice. I record the key / validation code, etc., for every piece of software that provides it, in a folder in my "Documents" folder and have this included in all my backup routines.

Re: My Heritage - A Warning!
Actually, with Continuous Payment Authorities companies don't even have to tell you if the amount and / or payment date change!. Most (UK) based companies that I have experience with (very few actually, as I am not a great fan of this type of payment!) do send me an email in advance of the payment b...

Re: Sheer number of sources!
I think it largely comes down to personal choice and what "works" for you. In my case, I mostly use Method 1 - I record the Source Title as (say), "Smith, Rosie - 1845 Baptism record" and would record the name of the Parish registers as the Repository , assuming I had not found the parish registry o...

Sorry Mike - funerals, family illnesses and preparations for a drive to Greece (completed today!) have rather got in the way of things. Re: Problem with Lookup Missing Census Facts
Certainly my experiences to date are that Widows have retained their married Surname - this includes records on my tree back to the 1851 UK Census. The married surname has also been used when the widow has re-married (at least, that is my experience with GRO records). In the case of Divorces though,...

I link the Media to the Source record and then cite that source record from each of the Individual records. The Source record can also contain other "common" data (eg the Census reference) and negate the need to include that on each of the Individual records

Re: Renamed Cemetery, Hospital et al
I keep Church names, etc,., in the Address field and the town, etc., in the Place field. Where there has been a change of name, or where I have identified that a church or similar has been known by two names then I include both in a single Address field, e.g. " the Parish Church (aka St. Andrew with...
