Re: Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
A further note for those advising newcomers to FH to abandon witness events. It is pretty easy to rename and re classify Events / Tags. I will do it. But removing witnesses is a far greater labour. I just ran a filter in TMG and found I have 485 instances in my main project. I myself am surprised as...

Re: Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
Thanks Mike. I take note of that. And will remove them from my trees before any great and permanent transfer to FH.
Must also look at queries etc.

Re: Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
I dont have time just now to investigate - But please make no assumption about how or whether TMG exports witnesses in a Gedcom or not. The last version of TMG offered some additional GEDCOM export choices but I didnt look into them. I simply opened my TMG file in FH - which is the recomended import...

Re: Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
A postscript on the add in freezing problem. I have not tried this again, with the Export GEDCOM or any other add in. It is possible that by downloading automatically through Windows 7 (which has a mind of its own about downloads I suspect) and then running the add in to install it, it found itself ...

Re: Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
Thank you very much, both of you, for the information. Just what I needed. I had hoped, yes that the GEDCOM import in Gedstar could be tweaked to accommodate the witness data previously imported direct from the TMG files. But you are right. It is not that simple. A word of explanation about my custo...

Re: Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
Thank you Mike. I am now up and running again - was too tired last night and couldnt cope. I feel this is now more than a TMG transfer problem. Several software packages now provide for witnesses and roles - and can therefore (in one way or another) accept TMG census entries using roles. However, I ...

Re: Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
You are very kind to explain. I did try again and each time I downloaded and tried to run the add in, FH froze. I had to use alt control and delete. I am now in even worse trouble as I decided to uninstall FH in case my installation had been corrupted. I uninstalled it and reinstalled version 6 but ...

Re: Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
I was too optimistic. I am now unsure whether I used the plug in for my export or not. I thought I did. The fact is that today I cant find out how to run the plug in. If I go to Tools, plug ins it shows me it may be running but then freezes the screen and the FH programme - several times that has ha...

Re: Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
Mike Thank you. I don't have media in FH yet and dont transfer media to my phone. No, I did not understand that a non-standard Tag was not the same as a custom event. Thank you for explaining that. As a new FH user (this is my first plug in) I had the instructions when I down loaded it, and then cou...

Using GEDSTAR Pro with FH import from TMG
I have for years used Gedstar Pro to carry my TMG family trees originally in Palm PDAs and later on my Android Smart Phone. I now have version 4.5.3. This program resides on one's Windows computer and converts TMG or Legacy Projects to a file that can be viewed on an Android phone app. It will also ...

Re: TMG to FH custom Facts (Tags)
No, I rightly understood we were talking about the direct import. You didnt make any mistake. I was only confessing that I had not understood that the direct import could be negotiated via GEDCOM and similar Fact / Tag choices choices make within the TMG Project prior to the direct transfer to FH. T...

Re: TMG to FH custom Facts (Tags)
Don, Please don't apologise. I do need the help. I need all the help I can get. I knew how to alter the GEDCOM export from TMG, but was using / testing the Direct import now available in FH6.0.4. It didn't cross my tiny mind that editing or changing GEDCOM Facts in TMG would feed into the direct imp...

TMG to FH custom Facts (Tags)
I would welcome guidance on the automatic import TMG 9 to FH 6 of custom (non GEDCOM standard) Tags. And the affect, if any, of FH plug ins and additional fact sets on the direct import of TMG Projects? There are additional fact sets for FH, and I note there is one for travel. Would the addition of ...

Map location mistake
I have twice made a trial import of a TMG 9 Project into FH 6. Today I purchased FH 6.0.4 and am using Windows 7 Home edition. I have owned FH for many years but am a pretty ignorant user. I find it particularly hard to understand when one is supposed to use an add in. Please treat this as a questio...

Re: TMG import with FH6 - no memos
Me too. Using trial version of FH 6 (not as on my Profile) Tho I failed to recognise it as a general problem! It happened I imported a Project in which I had used MISC tags for all sorts of events - from being mentioned in a diary to joining a club or being elected to office. The info has imported o...

Family History 6 and Widows xp
I have Family Historian 5 on a Windows 7 computer. I intend to upgrade. However, my net book which I take to libraries is still Windows xp. I realise xp is unsupported but I have chosen not to replace it. I understand that FH version 5 must be uninstalled from my main computer before installing vers...

Re: Custom fact sentences
Thank you for the advice on import. I am not at this point struggling to import my data. I am experimenting with FH using a TMG Project which I imported many years ago. This is not a current TMG to FH import issue. Using the menu Tools, Working with fact sets, I can now see that Facts normally share...

Custom fact sentences
This question related to users who are converting TMG Projects - But is more general. The UK edition of TMG had multiple census facts (Tags in TMG), offering a Tag for each census year. (This was to allow report output of the most likely census entry for each census year, since users could selecting...

Re: Putting FH on an android tablet
May be superfluous. I have used Gedstar pro for years converting The Master Genealogist Files for a handheld device. Now on version 4.5.0. for Android phone. It converts the TMG file or a GEDCOM file on one's computer into its own Gedstar file and opens them View only on my Samsung Galaxy 2 Android ...

Sources and Citation systems
I note from the plug in that one should choose between two methods of entering sources in FH. Like many people I have used both systems, changing over the years as gedcom and software became more sophisticated. Thus Method 2 one Source e.g. The Index to Registration of Births for England and Wales w...

Re: Sorting by fore-name
O so many apologies. I just discovered that one can add a column and sort on it. And did this. I need to try and pass on this info to TMG users, as it is wrongly stated elsewhere that one cant do this in FH.

Sorting by fore-name
I am a user of The Master Genealogist alongside FH, so looking at capabilities I shall miss in FH, now TMG is no more. Sorting by fore-name has been important to me. When examining oral evidence or diaries etc, one frequently comes across people - friends and family member identified only by their f...
