Re: Gay relationship
Thank you very much for your help, Mike, but my IT skills are just not up to the job. I kept the label on the left as you suggested, then copy-and-pasted your expression into the template ... but now the labels say 'mothermother' and 'brotherbrother' and 'rootbirthdayboy' and 'partnerhusband'! Thank...

Re: Gay relationship
Thank you all very much for your replies. Lorna, you were quite right in me recording my cousin as the root ... but now I'm a bit worried when Mike says that would be unsatisfactory?! Mike, I wish I could include a little snip of the diagram but the only part with a problem involves living people wh...

Re: Gay relationship
Forgot to say, Mike, yes it's definitely a diagram not a family group sheet. I'm planning on sending the PDF to the printers to be printed out on one long roll ... if it works!

Re: Gay relationship
I shall attempt to upload an attachment snip of the text scheme! Text Scheme.PNG Thank you, Jane and Mike. I wish I was better at explaining ... and using ICT! From what I can remember, I made a custom text scheme cloned from another one? It shows birth, baptism, occupation, death, burial and relati...

Gay relationship
I'm preparing a family tree for my cousin's 40th and I'm having a problem with the wording on his diagram/PDF. It was easy enough to add his husband's name and their date/place of marriage in 2014 but on the diagram it says he's his 'partner' and I know they will want it to say husband. (And having ...

Re: Project window query
Thank you all very much for your help! Mervyn: Luckily I have a huge monitor so I did what you suggested and opened up the two projects side-by-side and copy-and-pasted. Happy days! Mike: I thought I might be able to merge something but I'm too scared of losing all my precious stuff! Even before my ...

Project window query
Two stupid questions today:
How do you copy and paste individual records from one project to another?
And if that's not possible, can you open two different projects side by side so I can copy-type the details across myself?
Sorry, but I can't find the answer on Knowledge Base. Bit befuddled!

Named Lists
Apologies but I've been trying to do this for hours. I've done a Named List of 20 individuals with columns for birth, death and birthplace. It looks exactly what I want on my screen but I can't save it in that format to pass on to a family member. Whatever I try, it just keeps reverting to a simple ...

Thank you so much for that, Mike.
It actually worked and I even managed to delete two of the unwanted columns so it fitted on one page. Very happy!

Re: Addresses for an individual
Thank you, David, but I'm afraid I've fallen at the first hurdle! I can't find a standard query saying 'Individual Timeline'?
I'm looking at the query window and checking the drop-down menu but can't see it? Am I in the wrong place or just missing something obvious?!

Addresses for an individual
Sorry for this daft question but, as a non-techie, I'd like to know how to create/print-out a list of addresses from an individual record? I want to do a fieldwork trip tracing their footsteps/various residences throughout life. In the past, I've just copied them all out in chronological order by ha...

Surname and dates list
As a newbie I’m only just beginning to look at queries and still don’t really know what I’m doing! Sometimes when I’m off to the library/record office for a research day I just want to print off a handy list of, say, all the Brentons in my tree with their dates. None of the query types listed seemed...

Thank you both very much for your replies and patience.
I'm only on Chapter 13: Introduction to Queries at the moment ... but when I reach the Plugin section, I'll come back and read your suggestion again. I'm easily confused ... so small steps and all that!

Numpty newbie questions
Two more stupid queries, I’m afraid … still learning, sans IT skills! 1) Does it matter if FH is open/running or not when you’re using Ancestral Sources? I forgot to open it yesterday so when I’d closed AS, I thought oh no all that newly-entered data has gone, but I opened FH and it was magically th...

Just go for it!
I’d just like to reassure anybody out there who is wary of trying Ancestral Sources to go for it! I’m basing this on the ‘if I can do it, anybody can’ kind of assurance. I have no computer skills, I’ve only been researching my family history for about six months and I lost my memory somewhere after ...

Sources ... or regrets, I've had a few.
 Forgive my daft query but I haven’t been using FH for very long and, I’m ashamed to say, haven’t been using the Source capability at all until now. (Somehow I managed to add Citations but not Sources. Ahem!) I’m also too scared to use Ancestral Sources because it says you have to have mastere...

Re: Stupid question about notes and facts
Thank you very much, Mike. Plug-ins are way too advanced for me yet, I'm afraid ... I'm only up to chapter five in the manual ... but I'm going to save all your replies for when I have more experience and brain power. I'm a bit frazzled tonight after spending seven hours squinting at parish records ...

Re: Stupid question about notes and facts
Mike, you were quite right about how I'd created those Notes and I've turned them all into Facts now, so thanks for that. The only odd query I've got left now is that certain names have been spelt in different ways in censuses so I feel I should make a Note or Fact of that somewhere because it makes...

Re: Stupid question about notes and facts
Lorna, thank you very much. I've just followed your clear instructions and it worked! It's much easier to understand now without any extra displayed Notes to distract me. I think, in about a year, I will have managed to use about 2% of the potential of Family Historian. Still, slow but steady wins t...

Stupid question about notes and facts
Sorry to be a pain ... I know the answer will be in the manual somewhere but it may be quicker to ask before my brain fries completely! I've started writing some Notes on my granddad ... but they seem to be all appearing in the summary box/Focus Window which is a bit alarming. What have I done wrong...

Brilliant, it worked! Or, at least all those distracting curved lines have disappeared. I would never have worked that out on my own so thank you for such clear instructions: much appreciated.
