Re: V6 Backup very large files
Rob, don't know if this is anything to do with it, but you mentioned "default is set to F:". Some time ago MS altered Windows 7 so that I could no longer save files in the root of a drive (say if you want to save a file in the root you get the message "you do not have permission to save in this loca...

Jane, I think the idea is to show approval to the originator without making the topic more difficult to follow with extra posts. I suppose a bit like Facebook. I would also add agree + disagree, + thanks etc. Of course what we have is good, but often when these things are asked for it is a lot of tr...

Re: Ancestral Sources: Error Reading GEDCOM File
###EDIT - Apologies, I initially thought you had problems importing to FH, not just AS. In any case it might be worth trying some of my original post: You need to find the best way of getting the most data across. A point I disagree with Calico Pie is the lack of Plugin usage in the trial version, a...

Never used or heard of them before but they get a good ebay rating and have a non-ebay site if you don't like ebay or prefer to give all your money to the supplier rather than some to ebay, however looks like free postage on ebay. http://www.genealogysupplies.com/ http://www.genealogysupplies.com/fa...

Re: Customize Place in the Property Box
Even in TMG you could use the place fields anyway you wanted, I used the temple field as an abbreviation I could use instead of other fields which I then used in charts (trees) to reduce the space used. In respect of Gedcom it looks like you can use them anyway you want. They seem to be stored in GE...

I could not see a time slider on mine (win7), but after I ticked Time slider from the Map dropdown it came on.
Nice feature, must check it out, I like the drag both sliders together to show movement by year.

Re: FH V6 My Heritage Hints
Without an answer from Calico I don't think one could get to the bottom of this. I would suspect "business" model etc comes into this. Is it hopefully a revenue stream for Calico or an easy way to add an extra feature or both, both are legitimate aims. I too read the reviews on MyHeritage, but perha...

Re: Speculative Link
This is always a tricky one, but happens very regularly, especially if you key up to your database as you go, rather than take notes and key up when you are more sure. For me it is important to notate/highlight how tentative it is so it is easy to spot. The 2 methods I favour are: <> Add to the Fore...

Re: BDM registrations
I used TMG for many years and never thought of using the BMD "registration" tags until you just mentioned it. I just considered it to be part of or source for the "event". I tried to keep things simple and had say 1 tag for a birth and anything to go with it including any details which would either ...

Re: Text Formatting In FH6?
Interesting discussion which just goes to show that it is difficult for one program to do everything, and that is why many genealogists use more than one program and hence the importance of portability of data (yes a strong virtue of FH). When I was on TMG, as good as it was I used 2 other programs ...

Best format of PLACe and ADDRess for Map Geocoding
I've a busy few months ahead but I have just had time to install FHv6 and it is looking very nice. But with the new mapping features it has immediately prompted me to look again at my PLACe and ADDRess structure to make it fit in with the latest format that ties in with geocoding. <> Is there a best...

Re: news item linking Calico Pie and MyHeritage
Once again an interesting history + genealogy of the genealogy industry. If someone were inclined I'm sure they could use FH to create a tree, it would be a good test to see if FH could cope with multiple incest.
,. Mind, once again I'm sure it is the same in many business areas.

Re: known issues with GEDCOMs downloaded from Ancestry.com
I was in IT for many years and seen the scenario repeat itself. My guess (and only my guess) is that Ancestry decided to create a new Family Tree Maker. I understand they had acquired a very good in its time FTM that went to I think version 16. They then did a complete rewrite, I suspect by either a...

Re: Text Formatting In FH6?
When I used TMG I exported reports to *.rtf files. I created sentences (templates) with special combinations of characters. I then only needed a fairly simple Word Macro (experiment with simple record macro feature to what you need, e.g change styles, para format, font, colour) to run on any future ...

A quick partial repeat of what I said on another site earlier today: "Ancestry have a lot of good things, but not their trees either online or their FTM, I gave up on both years ago......" Ancestry do it their way, especially when it comes to notes, they freely admit that their own online trees and ...

Re: Family History 6 and Widows xp
There is of course a big debate re XP, but it is no longer supported and theoretically "not safe" re attack etc. I am now on Windows 7 and hoping for a new laptop soon, but I am waiting for Windows 10 which promises to be more laptop/pc friendly. But that is not much help if you want to use FH6 now ...

Re: TMG Import and Exhibits (Media)
I came from TMG, but had my data structured there so that it was as close to gedcom standard as possible, so I had little problems moving via a Gedcom file. So if you have non gedcomable items I doubt the Gedcom route would be of much use, and if you hope eventually to use the FHV6 witness import fa...

There are lots of free options here, and effectiveness/ popularity etc change. At the moment I'm with Avira which is down the list, but I felt I had more control, but recently moved from Avast.
