Re: Surname first for %FACT%,1,MALES_FIRST
Mike, I found the cause (see below), but FH should cope so emailed to info@calico-pie.com Dear CP, It was suggested by Mike Tate on the FHUG that I report this problem to you. It is noted at the end of this topic with extra info from Mike: http://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=12262 jiml...

Re: Surname first for %FACT%,1,MALES_FIRST
Thanks for that Mike, is much neater than my version, but I have no idea what it is doing. I can always add the column back if I want to sort on forename. your selectable "For Place fields choose one of the qualifiers such as %FACT.PLAC:FULL%." works as well as my presumably V5 "FACT.PLAC", interest...

Surname first for %FACT%,1,MALES_FIRST
I have created a query (below) to find PLACes and all Facts associated with them, there is an place "containing filter" so I can quickly jump to any of the the Facts or Place records. The only problem is the standard "=FactOwner(%FACT%,1,MALES_FIRST)" column appears forename first, so it is difficul...

Lorna, I stand corrected: jimlad68 wrote: However, if any of these places still had records with the same place, they will be recreated next time you close/start FH. No. Deleting a place record will remove it from the place field in any records which used it. It will not magically re-appear next tim...

Re: Program crashes when merging and editing places at same
baw, I think that you are expecting too much, considering the scenario, basically you are trying to do 2 updates on the same thing at the same time, however perhaps FH should not let you do it and block the second action. Might be worth mentioning to Calicao so they stop us trying to do it.

Re: PDF and Place data
re how I can delete places from this database? Depends which places. There are now 2 types in FHv6 (but very closely related). For the new style (with the geocoding) and displayed via the tab in Records, just select what you want (filer etc) edit > add to named list. then R mouse on the named list, ...

Re: "Syncing" with Ancestry
I'm not sure if they have changed it, but in the past you could not even overwrite an old tree, so to keep the same name you had to delete it, then recreate, meaning you had to reinvite your editors/browsers etc. As far as I can see the only way to"sync" with Ancestry trees is via FTM which is bette...

Not got into that yet, but sounds very useful, please let us know how you get on. Speaking to relatives can also be a problem, many are the other side of the world and you know if only you sat down with them you would get loads of info, but then there are people born say 1st half of 1900 who will on...

Re: Place and Address - Appearance in Reports etc.
Shiriki - Like you say: "There seems to be many different schools of thought". All I can advise is what my plan is and why, but that suits me and I recently adjusted it to fit in with Geocoding . 1. Keep all location details in the comma sepatated PLACe. I also feel that this is more portable, for i...

Re: My Heritage Data Integity
How are you exporting your Gedcom as that can make a big difference?
Have you tried using the Plugin Export Gedcom File? There are lots of options although I don't think there is a specific one for My Heritage, but one of the others should do it. If you find a good method, please let us know.

David, Bill, I am no expert in this, but if you want to use a text editor, (make sure it opens Unicode, Notepad++ does but I'm not sure about PSPad), to ensure you get only lines that begin with "2 PLAC" try this after switching on regular expression find/replace: "^2 PLAC " to "2 PLAC , " or whatev...

Re: Insert PLACE Field
I'm sure this could be done more "accurately/ efficiently" with a plugin, but don't ask me how. I like the idea of editing (running macro or other text manipulating program) the GEDCOM file direct, but I am always concerned that without full understanding of the task in hand, it might be easy to mes...

Re: resizing of Sentence box in Individual Properties box
I have grappled with this kind of problem for years in different programs, and FH is very typical. Either the box is too small, or the font is not suitable, especially for alignment. So Ian's problem of too small a box for editing. I totally agree. However, even when there is a good size box I will ...

Re: Ancestry trees ~ new to FH V6
Mistytor, if you search through the forum you will note that syncing with other trees, especially with Ancestry trees, is "troublesome". I find the easiest is to keep your master database in one place (for me FH) then if you need to, export the "best fit" Gedcom file to other trees. If you want to u...

Re: Ancestry trees ~ import to FH
As Mike said in an earlier post: Since you have decided to use FH for your master database, then eventually your Gedcom tree should always be exported from FH to Ancestry and not the other way. Except that is when you are able to download other peoples trees from Ancestry and merge them into FH. For...

Re: Exporting to Ancestry (long post)
Yes, the old problem that not all programs interpret GEDCOM correctly and/or in the same way. You also need a program that can report your data how you want it. Ancestry trees are notorious for missing data or "hiding" it or in this case getting it wrong. Hence important to design your data structur...

Doug, Sorting with a lack of dates can be a problem. I can only refer you too an earlier topic for a partial workaround: " - There are no SORT DATES in...

Re: FH TMG Direct import issues following V6.0.1
Having moved from TMG via a GEDCOM file I'm afraid I can't help with most of your points. Point 6. " Places are recorded as a comma separated sentence in FH." Whilst experimenting I noticed this, however via a GEDCOM file all the commas were kept (if you set up the export correctly) and I did like T...
