Re: How to document DNA connections with FHv7

Thanks for those observations. At present there seems to be variations on a theme, mostly using a custom fact. I am "live testing" now, but I can give what I have so far. - It is very much based on Jane's method (link above) using her query as a starting point (changed for my custom facts), but havi...

Re: moving from version 2 to version 7

... as Mike says, but experiment importing/converting your data and see what it looks like, play with it, work out any new data structures, nomenclatures, try new features before committing to that final import. Also check out the latest plugins and especially Ancestral Sources. Be patient, enjoy th...

Re: Diagram Box Expression, FACT ContainsText

Thanks again Mike, that works a treat, I like a bit of Boolean. I will keep this in place, but in this instance it might be simpler to have multiple conditions, but I am sure I will use the =IsTrue(...) function in the future. I'm sure it is nothing to worry about with LUA and modern PCs, but I ofte...

Diagram Box Expression, FACT ContainsText

I have a query with "=FactLabel(%FACT%)",,"contains",TEXT,"JGO" Works fine. I am trying to put the same thing into a Diagram Box Expression. e.g. =ContainsText(FactLabel(%FACT%),"JGO",STD) which does not work. My current fix is to have a Box condition for each %FACT% but I was hoping there would be ...

Re: New Laptop - Windows 11 FH won't start up.

I've not got windows 11 yet. All I can suggest is to run as administrator at least once. For some programs it is needed to "set things up", as Windows keeps increasing security, of course you should be sure that your files have no virus etc.
Either way, I think I would contact Calico to advise them.

Re: Autohotkey (AHK) "Productivity" shortcuts

No one seems to have mentioned compiling an ahk script file. There are pros and cons to this, the biggest con is that you have to recompile each time you make a change, by running the script "uncompiled" (usual way), it is much easier to test, edit, restart. As I understand it, the main advantage o...

I was just wondering how long an expression could be, I suspect from the commas the combinetext has max of 4 combines.

CombineText in a query

I am using a slightly amended column item from one of Jane's FACT queries: =Record(TextToNumber(GetLabelledText(%FACT.NOTE2%,"Connecting Ancestor FH Id:")),"I") This works fine and displays the simple Individual Name in the column. I have also worked this out to get the LifeDates: =LifeDates(Record(...

Re: Autohotkey (AHK) "Productivity" shortcuts

Now more questions. Do I have to run the script every time I restart my computer? Is there a way to have it run automatically every time I restart? My setup. I keep my scripts in a folder within another folder for program settings bits and pieces. This is to make it easy to backup and find rather t...

Re: Autohotkey (AHK) "Productivity" shortcuts

Don't get me wrong Helen, I think FH is wonderful, but there are countless examples of poor CLAF, and of course FH is not alone in this. - OK, Alt+F4 is universal, but I also think that Escape is a common standard to exit a popout. But for FH popout windows, Escape works on some and not others. - FH...

Re: Autohotkey (AHK) "Productivity" shortcuts

Bill, It is easy to make Escape mimic Alt+F4, but that would do it everywhere and close all sorts of things you don't want closing, a simple Esc:: Send !{F4} Hence Mike's offering, but it did not work for me, it might be my setup. The problem is to limit it to the window in question, and FH popout w...

Re: Autohotkey (AHK) "Productivity" shortcuts

Having played with AHK with FHv7 for some time I have a few "bespoke" additions which some might find of use as examples. Change the fh.txt to fh.ICO which is optional. jimld68 FHv7-AutoHotkey extras .ahk fh.txt This is another AHK with more examples I use for Windows, mostly for keyboard remapping....

Re: How to document DNA connections with FHv7

Thanks Helen, I was beginning to think that was the case. I can see more specialised tools might be needed for research, but I like to keep as much data as possible (even if it links elsewhere), in a simple and as structured a form as possible in one "master" place. I'll have another look at Jane's ...

The former "...which individuals in a project have taken DNA tests that show them to be related to the root" and to record any "data" that might be helpful, could be shared % or cM, segments. How to document DNA connections with FHv7

I am looking at documenting my DNA connections with FHv7. I would like to use a method as near standard as practicable. I have looked through the FHv7 help where there are some topics and the FHUG https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/recording-dna-matches/ (but this only shows for FH V5 and V6). There ...

Re: DNA tracing Ancestry and FH

Regret not a detailed response, and not sure if my situation is relevant. My situation is where there was an unknown father. I had quite a few known tree DNA matches on my side of an "unknown father", and other DNA matches to same female but with a different "known father". My idea was to get the "k...

Re: Combining .jpg files together

With all this "editing" you should bear in mind loss of quality ,unless it is a jpg lossless action. That is why for editing I mostly work in PNG files (lossless), even converting jpg to png, working on it, then saving in png so any future edits should not affect quality.

Re: Enhancement to the Shared Autosomal DNA Diagram

Correct. But because of recombination, the chance of you inheriting a particular bit of generic material from your grandparents is not exactly 25% -- it's there or thereabouts. And the more generations you go back, the more those little differences affect the possible amounts of shared DNA. Do any ...

Shouldn't this follow a typical "bell-shaped curve"
Bell Curve, my favourite, it explains so much in so many areas. I suppose my "50% chance of being in 1 range, 10% etc" implies the same or similar.

Simplicity is the key for me YES. I used your method of putting the detail "in the notes attached to each Person's Facts" for many years, the only problem being repetition. I then discovered the next simplest and more efficient method, Generic Source method 1 made quicker with Ancestral Sources. I ...
