Re: Somewhere between Method 1 and Method 2 Sourcing?

Many thanks to you both for your responses. I hadn't foreseen the extra editing involved in using note links so I will stick with changing to method 1 and converting my existing citations when the occasion arises..

Re: Somewhere between Method 1 and Method 2 Sourcing?

That's pretty much the situation I find myself in. When you decided to make the switch did you convert your older method 2 citations to method 1? or did you simply leave them as is and use method 1 for new citations of the type you mentioned?

Somewhere between Method 1 and Method 2 Sourcing?

As has been pointed out each of these methods of sourcing has advantages and disadvantages. I am inclined towards method 1 for census citations since method 2 generally leads to multiple copies of the same source transcript. However, it doesn't have to, if you put the transcript into a note record a...

Re: Showing images attached to events/citations

.... it is going to be clogging up my source list .... Putting my tongue in my cheek - do you regard the relatives that you documented last year as "clogging up" your list of individuals? Adrian We're into deep questions here. Approximately 20% of the individuals in my file are related to husbands ...

Re: Showing images attached to events/citations

Mike I can see your point and I have decided to make the transition once or twice - I am famous for my indecision. At the moment in a fairly small file I have about 2000 citations for the 8 England & Wales census sources and about a thousand census images on my computer which have not yet been proce...

Re: Showing images attached to events/citations

OK I missed a setting in the Source tab of the Report Options where I can choose a Location "Below Each Citation" for the citation pictures It looks a bit odd since I have both a map and a census image and they are shown in a vertical list but it occurs to me I can get round that easily by adding a ...

Re: Showing images attached to events/citations

Thank you Jane I am using the wrong terminology. What you are showing me is what I did and that is what I meant by editing the GEDCOM. So I will have to use more descriptive captions. Not a problem. I have learned from previous experience not to go blundering on without checking with the experts, pa...

Showing images attached to events/citations

I wonder if someone could offer me some enlightenment. I have an image from a piece of an old map showing the street where my grandmother lived in 1881, as mentioned in her 1881 census. I have attached the map to the census event and ticked the show event pictures box in the individual summary repor...

Re: GRO index predicts a marriage

That could be Michael Whitfield Foster's books "A Comedy of Errors" and "A Comedy of Errors Act 2" - not funny if you are relying on GRO indexes.

Re: Showing CustomID in the Focus Window

As you guessed there are duplicate records one related and one not. I have deleted the one not related and that resolves that problem. The duplication probably crept in when I merged two trees so I will be checking the root ends of my tree to see if there are any more.

Re: Showing CustomID in the Focus Window

Mike With my limited knowledge of FH I think I am getting in over my head. I tried running the query that you mentioned with some surprising results, e.g., my eldest son was put into a pool on his own and I am pretty sure he is related to me. But I really don't want to get into this just now. I have...

Re: Showing CustomID in the Focus Window

Yes I am using something similar to Terry Cole's variation, that was my starting point. The variations I have made are fairly minor; choosing symbols which would be acceptable to the Windows file system was the first main step and I set it up from the start to deal with a collection of trees each wi...

Re: Showing CustomID in the Focus Window

As well as using the Property Box Caption to show the Custom Id you can customise the Main tab to show the Custom Id. Either way, one click on any Individual in the Focus Window shows their Custom Id in the Property Box docked to the right. Mike, thanks for pointing that out, sometimes I'm blind to...

Re: Showing CustomID in the Focus Window

Many thanks for your rapid responses. I use the CustomID as a unique identifier (a variation of Dollarhide numbering) so that I can tell at a glance which subtree an individual belongs to , how close to the main ancestral trunk they are, whether they are directly related or related by marriage and h...

Showing CustomID in the Focus Window

First of all let me state that I am a rank beginner with FH - I started to use it in earnest yesterday - so please forgive me if I use the incorrect terminology. An important part of my family history file is the CustomID and I really would like it to be visible wherever I am editing records. I have...
