Re: Changing repositories
Another fascinating discussion. I almost didn't read this because I don't use Repositories but I am glad I did. Just a few comments from a UK bias. 1. Websites - I'll be honest virtually all my information comes from websites. However, I now download a digital copy of everything I use and I am going...

Re: Understanding table debugging
Mike I did know that and I used the built-in function to calculate my ancestors by scanning the file looking for ahnentafel numbers - very inefficient I now know but the only method I could think of at the time. Once I had a working script I tweaked it by using a direct method to calculate the ances...

Re: Understanding table debugging
Mike Well that is interesting, so this is not a problem in FH but a consequence of a well-defined operation in Lua with no guarantee as to the result. In the example I gave you the # could just as easily have been returned as 53, or in fact various numbers, including the 107 given, up to 595. So I g...

Thanks for persisting with this. This is not good news and I hope that Calico Pie will quickly resolve the problem.

Re: Understanding table debugging
Mike The explanation was quite clear but it does not prevent me being surprised at the order. There is no other table of the sme name. The debugging details are as I said in my first post. I have constructed a list of the index numbers from an inspection of the table. In the table these numbers are ...

I have of course read the reference that you gave me. The script I am using works perfectly well I was simply trying to understand the table debugging for future reference. Thank you for your help.

Re: Understanding table debugging
Mike Sorry but I still have a problem. I inserted your ipairs code immediately after the table was constructed and it gave me 53 entries. On checking the table again the first gap in fact occurs at 54 so that is consistent with a consecutive array of 53 elements but not an array of 107 (is the fact ...

Many thanks for the clear explanation. It is a great help to be able to understand the debugging variable lists.

Understanding table debugging
Let me say that this question is about understanding tables and debugging and not specifically about the example I am using. I have constructed a local table of individuals indexed by Ahnentafel number relative to a root using entries of the form AN[Anumber]=pi:Clone(). When I break the script at th...

Text colour in Lua script examples
I am trying to read some of the Lua examples in the Knowledge base where the code sits on a grey background with the keywords in a mustard? yellow, I don't know if it is my monitor but I find this text colour almost unreadable. Is there a setting somewhere that I am missing? I have changed the theme...

Re: Multiple Events and/or Assertions
Jan Many thanks for the link, more interesting reading. It highlights that there is no agreement as to the right or wrong way to do things and of course that is the basis of all interesting discussion. I was interested to note the use of 'assertion' as a means of stating that the evidence 'may' be u...

That is much neater and the logic is still transparent - a very important factor. I have a tendency to include too many comments but I do not want to fall into the trap described below. The remainder of this post is not relevant to Occupations but is relevant to Documentation Many years ago I read a...

Re: Occupations
Thanks Jane In the book I have been using string.find comes first and did the job, also generally I didn't have to worry too much about patterns. I'm trying to work out the pattern you suggested. Is this correct? the () means grab the string within; '.-' means 0 or more characters minimally expanded...

I am not intending to publish this so work in progress is not accurate. However. I am attempting to attach the plugin file. Please excuse my non-standard choices of variable names - I am not a programmer.

Re: Multiple Events and/or Assertions
I have been trying to follow this thread and it is fascinating so I thought I would put in my own, probably oversimplified, conclusion. It seems to me that the main thrust is that we should attempt to put our quart of data into the pint pot of a FH database. I don't think FH was designed for evidenc...

Excellent. Your idea of the separator works really well and following your plugin and drastically reducing the amount of data collected I was able to write a simple plugin to just count the number of individuals who recorded a particular occupation and discard duplicate mentions of the same occupati...

I was unaware of your plugin. I have downloaded it and will now spend some time trying to follow how it works and then, I hope, modify it to use your idea of the ~ separator, as it solves both my issues simultaneously.

I am thinking of using the Occupation Descriptor, as well as the Occupation description, and my thought is to split my occupation data into 'Occupation' and 'Descriptor'. So I would welcome opinions as to how this should be done, or even if it should be done.. At this moment I am thinking along the ...

Re: Importing from FTM2014
When you imported the GEDCOM into Family Historian did you check the option: 'Copy any linked multimedia files into the project folder;? If you did then the fact that they have not arrived suggests that their location is not available on your computer or the files were not properly linked in FTM2014...

Hi Derek
I don't know if it is any help but your source titles contain text formatting which is reminiscent of html tags. If this is a result of an import you may need to ensure that the exported GEDCOM is in plain text.

Mike Many thanks for the two references. I have read Terry Cole on Dollarhide numbering but do not recall reading something quite as clear as that tutorial. Dollarhide Numbering
I don't know where this topic belongs so am happy if it is moved. A couple of months ago, shortly after starting with FH, I mentioned the fact that I used Dollarhide Id numbering in my file and Mike Tate suggested that a plugin should be possible to set the numbers. http://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/view...

It was easier than I thought (how often does that happen?) I simply checked for an empty parents table (in the allChildren function), and moved to direct links to the child family if it was.
Many thanks

Re: Identifying Siblings
Jane Many thanks. I was using a modified version of the allChildren function of your plugin to do my sibling numbering and it works very well and I do need to have all those children. Your comment, however, has put me onto the right track (i think! it's a bit early in the day yet). At the end of the...
