Re: Plugin editor crashing FH
Just a progress report. I re-installed Windows but this time I stopped at Windows 7, updated it and re-installed FH. Copied in my project folders and the problem was still there. The tests conducted as in the above post revealed nothing and the other projects were fine. So as a further test I copied...

Re: Plugin editor crashing FH
Mervyn Sorry I didn't give enough detail. My Ids consist of a two letter sub-tree identifier, for example DN followed by an ahnetafel number in relation to the root of that subtree and other stuff which is not relevant here. So for example my id is DN1.0. The plugin expands the number after the iden...

Re: Plugin editor crashing FH
At this point I am becoming totally befuddled as to why this problem does not affect all my projects. I am currently writing a small plugin to pack out my (text) Id numbers with leading 0's so that they will sort numerically. It's a toggle, so testing means running it twice. On (a copy of) my workin...

FamilySearch backing out of GEDCOM?
Once a week I read a few Blogs and this week Tamura Jones 'Modern Software Experience' contained a blog from 20th August http://www.tamurajones.net/FamilySearchRemovesGEDCOM.xhtml noting that the reference pages to the GEDCOM 5.5 and GEDCOM 5.5.1 standards had been removed from the FamilySearch webs...

Re: Plugin editor crashing FH
:!: :!: Ok that was disappointing. I am now running a clean installation of Windows 8.1 Pro and FH is the only program installed. I ran FH, registered my key, installed no plugins, and opened and tested the sample project - no problem. Thinking all was well I copied in the projects from my backup dr...

Re: Plugin editor crashing FH
Mike & Mervyn Thanks for the comments. I did try the uninstall/reinstall of VC++ and FH and it didn't help. In the end it seemed to be the least painful route to re-install windows (I have yet to find out if it is not painful, I am currently using my laptop while the desktop downloads 8.1.) If this ...

Re: Plugin editor crashing FH
Mervyn You are probably correct regarding the initial problem and maybe my initial test did find a bug in the Lua interpreter. I have rolled back my system by 2 weeks to no effect and now I believe my Windows system in its interaction with FH is unstable (surprise :D ). The crash occurs at second ru...

Re: Plugin editor crashing FH
JIm Totally agree about portable software. I am a big fan. I will probably bite the bullet and roll back to factory installation (Windows 7!) and move it on from there. I have failed to keep up to date with Reflect images although I suspect I have a just-post installation image of Windows 8 with all...

Re: Plugin editor crashing FH
Well, as they say, 'This isn't over' It seems that I was too optimistic, not something that is usually a problem for me. This afternoon I opened FH and tried to run a script and got the standard Windows closing down message, checked the event viewer and the same problem. So this time I uninstalled a...

Re: Plugin editor crashing FH
Mervyn I see the problem. After your comment I did a quick search and discovered 19 copies of msvcr100.dll on my system with modification dates ranging from today back to March 2010. (Pity I didn't do that earlier I could have saved myself a download!). These were copies in program folders and hence...

Re: Plugin editor crashing FH
Mike You are probably right but neither method is hassle free and it is irritating to have to spend all this time and effort because an installer overwrote an existing installation of a redistributable package and, in addition, did it without a warning of the possible consequences for other software...

Re: Plugin editor crashing FH
I have run a full AV scan on my computer which found no problems. In the end I did what I should have done in the beginning. Since the program was being closed by Windows there had to be an entry in the Windows Applications event log. It turns out that the problem was with a dll named msvcr100.dll w...

Re: Plugin editor crashing FH
I am running Windows 8.1 Pro fully updated. I was running FH v 5.0.10 but as that was my most recent installation I restored back a day so I am now running FH v5.0.9 and the problem is still there. The only other recent installation I have is OpenOffice and I have uninstalled that. I have conducted ...

Re: Plugin editor crashing FH
I am guessing I have some background process running which is conflicting. Just for the record I have no wish to use reserved words as variables. My interest is in examining the error messages produced by the plugin editor in various circumstances. I should explain, just in case you think I am insan...

Re: App for Window-based Tablet
If you are already using Families, why don't you use GedFamilies which links directly to FH? A simple answer: because I had not heard of it. I have just checked it out on the Play Store and unfortunately got the message 'Your device is not compatible with this version' I am assuming that the incomp...

Re: Plugin editor crashing FH
It occurred to me after posting that perhaps it was associated with my windows user account. So I logged off and logged in as (built-in) administrator and the problem did not occur. So this problem seems to be user specific.

Plugin editor crashing FH
I was just checking out what kind of error message I would get if I tried to use a reserved word as a variable name. So I wrote in a single line of code and='and' clicked Go and as expected this produced an error message An error has occurred - plugin failed to complete Line 1: unexpected symbol nea...

App for Android-based Tablet
I have an 8" android tablet and I use the apps associated with my installed windows programs: Rootsmagic-to-go and Families (linked to Legacy). One of the reasons why I am so interested in moving my data from Family Historian to other software is to enable this use.

Re: App for Window-based Tablet
My apologies if I am missing something here but if your tablet runs Windows is there any reason why you cannot install FH on the tablet? Or in fact any windows family tree program with a small footprint.

Re: Standard v Custom GEDCOM
Mike
I think you are correct. I only have a tiny number of source notes in my current working file but I will have a significantly larger number in other files and if each note is going to generate a new source record on export/import then perhaps action could be considered.

Re: Standard v Custom GEDCOM
Mike In Rootsmagic the exported GEDCOM contains source fields ABBR, TITL, REFN, TEXT NOTE, OBJE. Regarding the source Notes: RM and Legacy on GEDCOM export created a new source record with Title and Short Title equal to the text of the source note. FTM2014: the GEDCOM export of the free floating cit...

Re: Standard v Custom GEDCOM
Mike I used your new version to export to RootsMagic and came across an oddity which I have been trying to understand. Rootsmagic seems to import sources in a fairly standard fashion using the short title in the list of sources. However, scrolling down that list I found two sources that were new to ...

Re: GEDCOM Between Various Programs
Mike Regarding Legacy. I am certain that conversion of date ranges into quarter dates is not going to happen, far too many assumptions involved. On the export GEDCOM direction (from Legacy) one of the options that can be chosen is to not convert quarter dates to a range, but the default is to conver...

Re: GEDCOM Between Various Programs
Mike I'm having a cloudy day! Why I should think that Legacy software was linking those notes I do not know, I have checked the log file and the unrecognized dates were all "" enclosed date phrases in my FH file. My comment regarding quarter dates is because Legacy, like FH, will recognize quarter d...

Re: GEDCOM Between Various Programs
Mike. Feedback on Legacy v8 Legacy is harder to test because there are numerous options and customizations available both with import and export. I simply accepted defaults as far as possible. At the import Legacy noted that it did not recognize flag records and I was given the option of mapping the...
