Re: FH review
There is always going to be a problem with buying software on the basis of reading reviews. For example if you look at the Genealogy Software Review 2015 http://genealogy-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ Then we find Legacy topping the list with Family Tree Maker second and RootsMagic third. If we...

Hi
I think you will find the answer to your question is within the help file under the heading Work With Fact Sets in the Fact Types Dialog - Visible and Status settings.

Re: Custom reports
Possibly straying off-topic a bit, sorry. I think it is worth pointing out that (at least in Windows 7) the Windows Search facility is a front end to the indexing service which is essential to the functioning of the Libraries in Explorer. If you want to regularly search the content of files then the...

Re: Narrative Reports and Shared Note Records
You can include data references within {} in a sentence template so adding {%FACT.NOTE[1]>%} to an appropriate place in the template should do the trick.
Search for Template Code in the Help File and this information is almost at the end of a page headed Template Codes.

Re: iup.GetFile in FH Plugin Help
Mike, sorry to give the impression that I have a problem writing a specific script. I am still in the early stages of using iup and what i am doing is working through the iup section in the help file to try and get a feel for what is possible and to ensure that I understand the syntax. I know that i...

Re: iup.GetFile in FH Plugin Help
Thanks for the reply Mike. Comparing my guess with your example I think the main difference is that my strReturn should be intReturn to identify that the return is an integer not a string. David Added in Edit: the evidence suggests that the syntax in the FH help file is in fact incorrect. The interp...

iup.GetFile in FH Plugin Help
In the help file for iup.GetFile I am having difficulty understanding the Syntax. The example below it does not seem to match. I would welcome some expert help My best guess is that it should read strFileName, strReturn = iup.GetFile(strFileName) or possibly this strEndingText, strReturn = iup.GetFi...

Re: Common interests / research
I don't know whether there is a forum policy about recommending other forums but I think for these types of family research questions (as opposed to Family Historian questions) you would be best served on a more general genealogy site. There are many. The one I use is Family Tree Forum http://www.fa...

Re: Select a Record via a Plugin
Mike Thank you for your detailed response and the suggestion regarding the custom GUI I will look into that. Unfortunately it seems, as Jane said also, that what I wanted to do is not possible. Regarding your other comments: You are correct the plugin (not me) identifies the principal using the uniq...

Re: Select a Record via a Plugin
Thanks for responding so promptly. More details: I have to give some background which may be too much detail, if so, I'm sorry. In addition I am not really looking for comments on my process since it works for me and I am very unlikely to change it now. I use separate custom events, by year, for cen...

Select a Record via a Plugin
I may well be missing something obvious here but bear with me.
Is there a way to Select a Record found via a plugin?
I am using fhPromptUserForRecordSel('INDI') and I would like to set a starting individual from within the plugin.

Re: How many Grandprarents report by generation?
Jane I have been thinking about your comment regarding the maximum number of Ancestors. Clearly correct but it does depend on the family tree in question and I don't think there will ever be enough information to do an accurate maximum possible count in all generations. Obviously it is not possible ...

Re: How many Grandprarents report by generation?
Jane
Nice. I ran this on my file root (not me) and it picked up both birth and adopted families of one ancestor as can be seen in the Great Grandparents count and up (a bit).
It also makes one realise how much is missing

Re: Research Notes
Mike Thanks for the suggestion. One of the beauties of FH is the wide range of options in reports and I think this problem arose because I chose to include Notes in the main section of the Individual Summary Report rather than having them in separately headed sections at the end of the report. So I ...

Private Notes
[These comments follow on from the 11086|Research Notes thread in the New Wish List Requests Forum.] Another alternative is to make your research notes private, ensure that you have not ticked include private notes and they will, as far as reports are concerned, be almost invisible. I say almost bec...

Re: ShortCut Icon for Plug In
I know it is not so fast as clicking an icon but they can be individually added to the Tools Menu and that gives pretty quick access. If you have not come across this then go to Tools > Plugins , Click the More>> button at the bottom of the Plugins box and when you select a plugin the Check Box ' Ad...

Just installed FH6 and after using it for about 10 mins (have to leave the computer now) I find the list filtering a huge improvement and that alone is worth the upgrade price.

Hi In the focus window: Select a parent and show their property box (if it is not showing click the icon in the toolbar that looks like a hand holding a sheet). On the Main tab of the property box you should either see a list of children at the bottom or a pair of down arrows surrounding the word mo...

First Individual does not have lowest Record Id
I'm asking this question out of curiosity not because it is particularly important. I am running a loop through individuals starting with the usual MoveToFirstRecord. Now I expected this first record to have Record Id 1 but in fact their record Id is 117. I looked at the GED file and indeed the indi...

Re: Upgrading to FH5
Family Historian is an excellent program but asking if you are making the right choice on a forum dedicated to Family Historian may not give you an unbiassed view. My suggestion would be to join a forum dedicated to Family History but not biassed towards one piece of software. A forum which fits tha...

GEDCOM File Finder.PNG Mike I am attaching a screen shot of part of the output from GEDCOM file finder as used on my backup folder As I said a mini-sample. Re: Dealing with more than one possible relative
There are numerous ways of doing this and I hope other forum members will share their methods (I am certainly interested to see what others do). One fairly simple way is to add a new (unrelated) individual, enter the data that you have and then using the Edit Menu (Edit > Add to Named List) add them...

Re: FamilySearch backing out of GEDCOM?
The freeware Utility mentioned in the Behold blog 'GEDCOM File Finder' is interesting if you are interested in GEDCOM versions (Of course I don't know how accurate it is). On my backup drive I have numerous (more than 1300) gedcom files mostly produced by FH5 (v5.5 ANSI) but also by Rootsmagic 6 (v5...

Re: Identify all occurrences of a particular place
I'm attaching a custom query which takes as a parameter any string that might appear in a full place name and then returns all the facts where it occurs.
If it is not quite what you want it might provide a basis for constructing your own query.
