Re: Problems Importing FTM Gedcom to FH

The occupations problem, amalgamating place and event description data, is a known issue with earlier versions of FTM but it shouldn't occur with FTM2012.

Re: Save Diagram as .pdf in Win10

You are coming up against one of the peculiarities of Windows Explorer, it does not show the .lnk extension for a shortcut but specifies it as type shortcut. I suspect that many of these shortcuts are appearing in the Recent items folder, there is no garbage collection to remove shortcuts which are ...

Re: Save Diagram as .pdf in Win10

It seems that the settings in the Default pdf printer profiles cannot be permanently changed. A possible solution is to make a new profile and tick the setting "Show Select Profile dialog when printing" and that will give you the opportunity to choose your own settings. Also, as far as I can tell, w...

Re: Save Diagram as .pdf in Win10

I think perhaps a first step is to verify that Adobe is set as the default pdf reader. From the Start Menu Settings > System > Default Apps. Scroll to the bottom of the list on the right and select Choose default Applications by File Type. In the list that appears scroll down until you reach .pdf. T...

In case it helps there is a discussion of the blank page problem here

with a long post which suggests the solution may be settings in your security program.

Re: PDF Text Highlighting

I think it depends on how the image was scanned. There is a brief explanation here

https://itaccessibility.illinois.edu/pd ... textvimage

I have done the cursor test on London Gazette images and the ones I have contain text, the cursor test on pdfs from FindMyPast indicate images only.

Re: Windows 10

Mike I have clean installed Windows 10 and re-installed Family Historian which now appears to be functioning as it should, without the necessity of running as an administrator. I was hoping it would be faster without all the installed detritus that came over with the upgrade from 8.1 but subjectivel...

Re: Windows 10

I didn't think to use the system file checker and I will give it a shot later. Regarding the permissions all of my working data is on a partition of a non-system drive and I took ownership of that partition and applied the permissions to that. My system is a bit complex (I am running 3 operating sys...

Re: Windows 10

Continuing my previous post (I pressed submit accidentally) the permissions for modifying and writing have been removed and a quick check suggests that this has happened throughout my documents folder. At this point I am tired of trying to make Windows 10 work and I am going to choose one of the fol...

Re: Windows 10

I have tried a variety of options with setting permissions for Windows 10 and although I have not verified this it seems that permissions are being re-written on reboor t (or some time). For example, having set all the permissions for full control I started FH without 'as administrator' and the firs...

Re: Windows 10

The permissions problem affects many things. I have had a failing add in to Thunderbird because it was unable to save a temporary file, Word documents which opened as Read Only (from my Documents folder) followed by access denied when I tried to save an altered copy. It is intensely irritating and f...

Re: Starting a fresh

There are clearly different approaches to starting afresh. When I started with FH5 I took my existing file, imported from Legacy, and stripped it of all data except the most basic names and dates (sourced or not) to give me a starting point. (At the same time it gave me a bit of practice at writing ...

Despite your reservation regarding plug-ins it is probably the only option for bulk editing. There is a plug-in available in the store which should help.

Sorting by the File column in the media listing gives you the information about file paths and file names, but probably the visually best method is to use the external file links view.

Re: Blank tab in the Focus Window

Hi Mike You are correct regarding validation. I do not do it very often. I eventually fixed the file by simply deleting the two 'orphan' family records and then re-creating them by hand. File validation now shows no errors. I have taken the gedcom from my most recent backup and run file validation o...

Blank tab in the Focus Window

EmptyFocus.JPG I have this strange problem with the focus window. It only affects three individuals (as far as I can tell) when I select one of these few I see a focus window with their name in the top box, but the Spouses & Children Tab is empty apart from a marriage date and place. Their individu...

Re: Property Box - showing sources

I know this is an old thread but I would like to share a method I use which essentially copies the * marking in the sources drop down list for the individuals fact list. The following 'kludge' achieves this by using a source tag, which I never use, namely the 'Agency Responsible'. If that doesn't wo...

Re: Defining Census as an attribute instead of event

Just a couple of comments to Shosh. A Census attribute would be a custom attribute and that is denoted in the GEDCOM by an _ATTR tag. This will not always be recognized by other software but a great deal of work has been done by Mike Tate to create the 'Export Gedcom File' plugin which addresses thi...

Re: Is it possible to merge Facts?

Nicola

Although it does not help to solve the problem the explanation of why it occurred may be in the FTM section on this page

http://www.tcgr.bufton.org/tcgpcomp.htm

and is connected with GEDCOM export from versions of FTM prior to FTM2008
