Re: Places, Unused
You need to make a Named List of the unused places: 1. Go to the Records Window, Places Tab and alt-click the Links column to sort the places by number of links with the unused at the top of the list. 2. Select the first and then shift-click the last of the places with 0 links to select all the unus...

Re: places linking to person
You can create lists of the records which link to given places or addresses as follows. Places: go to the Records window Places tab and select the place, then go to the menu View>Record Links and that will give you a box containing all the links to that place. If you wish to process them further tha...

Tech Mistakes to Avoid
I picked up the following blog link https://familysearch.org/blog/en/undo-25-tech-mistakes-avoid/ from the RootsTech 2016 Conference Blog Compendium on this site http://www.geneamusings.com/ I thought some of the suggestions in it might spark a discussion. I should note that neither blog includes th...

Re: New Pre-release: 6.1.3
True Lorna. Something is obviously not working correctly to deselect the Source/Citation, unless you close the pane, when you click on the Facts Show Media. So here's another scenario. I have individuals for whom I have a baptism register image which also contains a date of birth. My previous pract...

Re: Alternate names in Indiv Records list; how to show?
I think the filter issue may be explained in the same way as a}. The filter can look for the filtered name in alternate names as well as the record names but it still displays only the record containing the alternate name not the alternate name itself, unless you have a column showing alternate name...

Re: Alternate names in Indiv Records list; how to show?
I think what you are asking for is to mix in the alternate names into the first column of names in the Individuals tab of the Records Window. I don't think that is possible. You can however show them alongside the name of the individual as follows. You need to add an extra column to the Records Wind...

If you don't have access to Word then Winmerge Portable

Re: switch off the popup at the RH side of the FHUG forum we
I don't want to get into a discussion about the use of Ad-blockers, but I have AdBlock installed in Chrome and right-clicking the pop-up at the bottom brings up a contect menu with AdBlock as an item. Using that it is possible to block the pop-up and it seems to be sticking across FHUG. Before anyon...

Re: switch off the popup at the RH side of the FHUG forum we
I don't have a phone but on my full size screen if you hover the mouse over the lower end of the popup a pair of arrows appear and clicking them slides the pop-up off the screen and leaves behind a pair of arrows that can be clicked to show the popup again. David Added in edit. It seems that you hav...

Re: Clearing all certainty assessments
If your query has a column containing the values of the Certainty Assessments then select all the values in that column, go to menu Edit and click Delete. A warning will pop up asking if you are quite sure and if you are then click OK. If you make an error you can go to the Edit menu and Undo the ac...

Re: 1939 Register on Find My Past
According to the information on this TNA page http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/1939-register/ the records were kept by the NHS for more than 50 years and name changes (and presumably deaths) are recorded. When I looked up my mother she was listed with her ma...

Re: Gedcom import errors
Mike I think the first exmple in the TMG_refugee post is very similar in that it is using a subset of the tags. In the few files I have in RM I don't think I have any source which is not Free-form. Following on the comment made by AdrianBruce the basic part of an RM source consists of the three item...

Re: Gedcom import errors
RootsMagic has numerous templates but when importing sources I believe that generally the template information is converted into a non-templated "Free-form" source. Creating a new "Free-form" source in RootsMagic offers the following fields: Master Source, Footnote, Short footnote, Bibliography on t...

Re: Gedcom import errors
But it seems many developers have worked from the faulty example rather than the formal specification, and have ignored the very obvious change described on Page 6 . I rest my case, m'lord. Amen to that. I currently have FH, FTM 2014, RootsMagic 7 and Legacy 8 installed (and if anybody is intereste...

I think the _TMPLT refers to a Source Template. Both RootsMagic and Legacy make use of Source Templates.

Re: Gedcom import errors
Precisely, it is a Draft release prepared by the Family History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and yet contains an example of an apparently illegal use of a tag which is unchanged from version 5.5. We can speculate as to why that is - did they make the change in an ea...

Re: Gedcom import errors
I believe the problem, as with so many import problems, lies in the fact that the two GEDCOM standards are not the same and as with most file format changes software sticking to the older version will have problems reading the newer. The examples below are taken from the GEDCOM standard documents. T...

Problem with fhSetValueAsText
This problem occurred in the middle of writing another plugin. The code below is a brief sample to demonstrate the problem pp=fhNewItemPtr() ppt=fhNewItemPtr() str='Happy Christmas' old='Happy' new='Merry' pp=fhCreateItem('NOTE') ppt=fhCreateItem('TEXT',pp) fhSetValueAsText(ppt, str) str=string.gsub(...
