Re: Assigning a fact to multiple individuals

As a lumper: My source record will hold "master record" information about a source - a book, an artefact, or a collection (such as FreeBMD Births or the 1851 Census on FMP). Against it I will want to hold information specific to the source: Its repository Its general reliability/applicability (e.g....

Re: Assigning a fact to multiple individuals

I wonder if the differences of opinion are rooted in a philosophical difference in how we understand records. For me, a Source record is a record about the Source AND about my view of that source. It contains information to enable me to find the Source again, information about what I found within t...

Re: Assigning a fact to multiple individuals

There may be a case for arguing that a lumped source containing hundreds or thousands of citations need not be updated when an individual citation changes. However, by adding or deleting a citation to a source, you are changing the significance of that source in supporting the story you want to tel...

Re: Assigning a fact to multiple individuals

The same Updated timestamp changes occur with any added or deleted link from one record to another. e.g. When a Repository is added or removed from a Source the Repository record Updated timestamp changes. When a Note record is added or removed from another record the Note record Updated timestamp ...

Re: Assigning a fact to multiple individuals

citations contain only a pointer (XREF) to another (source) record[/list] This is wrong. Citations contain a pointer to a source record, but can also contain: a Quality Assessment, a Note, Text from Source, Where within Source, an Entry Date, and Event Type Responsible. So Adding or Removing a cita...

Re: Assigning a fact to multiple individuals

Witness is a one-way link that could be souped up to be two-way... To be rigorous, we need to specify what 1-way and 2-way mean in this context... Adrian, acknowledging everything you say, which is perfectly right (I think), let me shut down with these: Thanks for responding generously & constructi...

Re: Assigning a fact to multiple individuals

That's really informative, thanks. Sorry I didn't go searching for any follow-up. I do know the ticket system and used it a few times, but glad to know informal review is commonplace here. Yep, I definitely have a different perspective. :) It's no contest if Calico has some under-the-hood imperative...

Re: Assigning a fact to multiple individuals

As an aside, I have often wondered why the updated date/time for a Source record changes if one of its citations is deleted, but not if an extra citation is added. Is there a logical explanation for this? Lorna, just discovered this old post and remark of yours, and was really surprised. For a mome...

No, Helen :)
I'm more inclined to watch for reaction, take account of useful feedback, wait for any possible recommendations to go there and, lacking that, do so regardless only if I feel strongly enough. Which I might in the end this time.

Ah well, worth a brain storm, learn something in the process, and I look forward to any other outcome/ solutions. Like this, Jim? The plug-in solutions (or some adaptation of the AS approach, which comes to the same thing) were/are/will be an admirable intervention by the best fire department in ge...

Source: Event Type Responsible

This tag probably doesn't get used very much, but it seems to have its uses if one source/citation is also linked/edited for another fact (or even another individual, etc.). With a census I noticed the ALL drop-down had many rows, a lot more than the relatively few in what I take to be the correspon...

Re: I Quit FH for TMG

But why, if you got the details from FreeBMD or from an Ancestry/FMP/Family Search Collection , why not record it as that? (Lumping) I might get a census record off Ancestry and give the source as 1851 E&W Census (Ancestry) - using the TNA reference as the "Where within Source" - and I may agree wi...

Re: I Quit FH for TMG

That two-level Publication data works for me - it says where I found it and where the original paper(ish) copy is so that if you want to consult that, then you can. It is important for me to record the web-site because I can give you an example where the Ancestry image of a census page has an ink-b...

Re: I Quit FH for TMG

The vast majority of genealogy software, so far as I know, work on the basis that a Source is the single (usually but not always) physical object that you consulted to get the information in question. Thus if I read the book "My Life in Kenya" using the British Library's copy, I (usually) create a ...

To me, that sounds like a good supporting argument for the usual forum advice of keeping everything in one big Project. I actually run 3 Projects, but they are unrelated to each other and are in 2 different countries. Sorry to take issue with that. The forum advice is presumably intended for the "g...

I chose not to create an extra column for the Project name because it would be very repetitive and long Project Names would consume a great amount of space.
