posting fh to web
I've used Lagacy, RootsMagic and GED4WEB for various versions & purposes. Certainly,GED4WEB works well and is cheap to buy. There are others around but it depends what you want to display. Unfortunately, my ISP (Demon) can't handhe PHP and I haven't tried the other free sites that I use. Hope this m...

Birth Registered Twice??
The father could well have been the house-holder himself, or possibly, his son. The latter is my favourite of this (unlikely!) scenario!!!!!

Birth Registered Twice??
Perhaps the parents were desperately trying to give the child legitimacy as it was born a month prematurely? After all, had they married before the birth, tongues would certainly have been wagging. I'd be interested to know the sort of year you are talking about, by the way.

Diagram size
Hi Jane The diagram is 23 A4 horizontal pages across & 2 deep. The metafile in Word, the whole diagram fits across the width of one sheet of A4 - rather small!!! However, it does go into Excel. I'm just trying to get it into a form that some of the other people looking at the same families can see. ...

When I try to copy a diagram as a bitmap, I get the error message that the size is too big. Changing to enhanced metafile, results in an image in Photoshop that is totally un-readable!
Any ideas?

IrfanView is an excellent ptogram, I agree. Also, Vallen Jpegger, which is free too. Included on the December CD with Your Family Tree magazine, is ACDSee. One of these programs should allow you to convert the file, making sure it is RGB format. As Jane says, try the compression. If necessary, conve...

Diagrams - saving as .jpg, .gif, .png etc.
I am a photographer and have used digital images as part of my last job. Their manipulation was part of everyday tasks. Still miss the old darkroom though. If anyone wants to ask questions about that kind of thing and if it would help take some of the pressure off Jane, then please feel free to ask ...

Printing Page Numbers in Diagrams
I think it would be useful to have the option to print page numbers. If the font could be sized as well then on some of the numerals would be covered by the overlap when the pages were stuck together. Assuming the numbers were in the top left corner as they appear on screen.

Placing info on a web site
Sadly, Demon, whose server runs my e-mail doesn't support PHP. The concensus of opinion on the 4 variations on one of my family sites reckon that Ged4web gives a pretty good cross-section of information and flexibility. Admittedly, it does produce a lot of html pages but once they're done, then usin...

Finding people in Manchester
I assume you have searched the whole of the 1901 Census, with different spellings etc., as, don't forget, if they were visiting other people or working away, they could be in different areas of the country. If they were in Scotland, they would be registered anyway. If they were in 'transit' on the d...

I've had a few similar problems this week-end too. I can link myself to my natural parents with no problem, obviously. And I can link myself with my adopted name to my adoptive parents. Trying to show myself as the same person but with two names seems to cause a problem. Alias or Associated Person a...

Try the following link.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... search.asp
The Ancestral File, I.G.I. & Pedigree Resource File can 'sometime' give unexpected results! At least the odd date discovered might be cross-referenced to a Quarter from the GRO or FreeBMD.

Try this one too.

If you know the name or areas of the mines/pits etc. try searching along that line.
What did they mine, by the way? Most of my lot were lead miners in Shropshire.

Doesn't matter how sophisticated your system is - large images (in terms of file size, rather than canvas size, as it were) are not really advisable as they slow everything down. Some of the pix I take for work can be over 40 mb, especially if layered and I wouldn't dream of using them in FH! Make t...

Are you living in England or Scotland? I don't know if Scottish library Archive/Research facilities have the BMD records on fiche but that is probably a good starting point.
Look for births from 1897 0nwards.

How to convert pdf files to jpg files
Every time I've 'bought' a downloaded page from 1901 with the good-old voucher, I've had the option to save it as a TIFF file (as well as a PDF). I can't think of any of the free image-viewing softwares available that won't let you look at TIFFs. I think that Irfan Viewer allows you to convert from ...
