Completeness of 1861-91 Census
I've made comments somewhere else on our site, about searches, subscriptions and the like. For all their faults, if one utilises the features provided and works through the information collected, then ALL the sites, free or not, provide a heck of a lot of extremely valuable research material. Being ...

Excel files
I'm not able to check this out as I'm at work but I can't remember if Excel files can be imported into FH or not. I've received a 'tree' which is an .xls file (looks a bit like a pivot table) and it would be a pain to ty[e it all out again.
Anyone out there got any suggestions?

1871 Census Easingwold
E-mail me with some name & other details and I'll see what I can do. If it's not clear, search for me - vliet- and that should bring up the address.
If not, just put the names as a reply - I'm sure you'll get help!

1837 online invitation
A couple of Carlsbergs later and searching unti almost 2 this morning and I reckon I'll be keeping the 1837 set-up. I think my hasty comments were based on the gut reaction that I'd been conned. I don't think I have. IF 1837 reply to my e-mail commenting on the situation I will apologise (sort of!) ...

1837 online invitation
The information is on Ancestry, sure enough, right up to 1983. It looks like 1837 knew all about it and I, along with doubtless a load more, have been conned out of a fiver. That is assuming I can get a refund as they promise on the site, of the £50 less any units used or minimum £5 cancellation fee...

1837 online invitation
Right. My login details were not needed as the link in the e-mail took me straight to the payment bit, as it were. Therefore, I have to assume that, for whatever reason, the 'invitation' came out of the blue as I have only been a very infrequent user of 1837, because of the cost. Looks like it will ...

I'm going to have a bite to eat, then subscribe BUT, at the moment I think it's only via the e-mail, Dave. There was no code or anything in it so perhaps it's the link.
I'll let you all know.

1837 helpline have confirmed that all the BMD material for England & Walse is free as past of the subscription but foreign records, 1861 Census & military stuff is still subject to buying units.
So, it seems a good deal.

1837 online invitation
Hi All Has anyone else who might subscribe to the 1837 online site had an invitation to have free unlimited access to the BMD info for £50 for a year? I received an e-mail yesterday and think it would be superb to let me search for some of the missing people in my immediate family. BUT - I don't kno...

Deaths
Hi All
My memory is slacking but I can't remember if, on the BMD fiche at the library (for example) is a person's age at death recorded? If so, what year did it start? I know that a mother's maiden name appeared on the Birth fiche records about 1909 or around there.

I seem to remember that a program I used to use called Goldwave, was just the sort of thing and I recall just linking up a stereo cable from the headphone socket to the sound card on the PC to record from cassette or vinyl to a CD. So, the principle should be the same. I seem to recall that Goldwave...

Announcing Family Historian 3
I'll be ordering my upgrade from TWR probably. I've already used them for a Census CD and, bless them, they couldn't supply on the expected release date as Ancestry fouled up, good & proper. However, almost as soon as they received stock, so did I! I can't wait for the new features in v3 and, when I...

This still causes me problems. I was adopted and have birth & adopted names. I still can't get 'both of me' conveniently on diagrams and if you search through the forums you'll find earlier questions. I've tried linking as same person, or putting a note or whatever, but it doesn't seem to work. It d...

Genes Reunited and privacy
Privacy is a bit of an 'in' thing nowadays, especially with all the worries about identity fraud and so on. It is worrying, I grant you but this is the way I have dealt with it and it seems to work. Using a program like Res Privita (or whatever it's called!) to get rid of dates & other information y...

Hi Jane
How do I add a column for another spouse eg second wife? I suspect it's not difficult but I couldn't get my head around it last night.

Tips from Simon
Great tips. Simon. Another comment about the mouse wheel is that (at least on our PC & with our mouse) placing the cursor arrow in the bottom scroll bar allows you to move the diagram left or right with the up or down motion of the wheel. I bet a lot of people out there know that already! Regards. V...

Hello
Yes, welcome Magnus.
The whole business of family history & genealogy is absolutely fascinating and I have only been doing it for about three years.
Thankfully, there are so many people out there who are only too willing to help.
Remember the golden rle - if in doubt, ASK!
