Re: GRO Index Searches
One must bear in mind that in the GRO (and FreeBMD) there are missing entries. The only complete list would be in the local Registry office where the original registry books are kept My mother's two sisters marriages are not listed on the GRO but was able to find a copy of their certificate in the l...

Re: GRO Index Searches
Thanks for the update. It has been awhile since I looked at the GRO site. I think it only goes as far as 1957. Ancestry goes further and does give dates of birth for those who have died Genuki has the advantage of listing name of church (where available) which the GRO and FreeBMD do not This only ap...

GRO Index Searches
[ This discussion is derived from the thread 15251|Changing a person's name and father link . ] Elaine Regarding the GRO web site David mentioned it is used for ordering certificates. You can look at FreeBMD that is for searching and gives a reference number for you to order certificates. For births...

Re: Family Law
May be the second registration is not the birth but it will indicate the parents have registered the child after marriage and can confirm the father is the actual father. We do have instances when no one knows who the father is after the mother has married. Like my grandfather. His mother's husband ...

Family Law
I have just read about Family Law It appears that since 1976 if a child is born before the parents married it has to be re-registered even if the father of the child is on the birth certificate. This would mean the FH might have to have two birth facts for the child, See http://www.hulldailymail.co....

Re: Web site creation - suppressing certain facts
Whenever I come across a living fact I go onto FreeBMD and find the details of the person (if it is in UK) so long as there is just one of that persons name I add the reference to my tree. Years ago I saw a photo on someone's tree and asked him what his relationship to the person was. He wouldn't te...

Re: delete individuals
It has been awhile since I deleted anyone. What I have done is highlight the name and from the tool bar prompt edit and then delete Will have to try doing a right click next time. I don't think I have done it that way I wonder if when opening edit the 'delete' can be greyed out to avoid it being del...

Re: delete individuals
One problem I have when deleting an individual is that the end result ends with my name (which I have set as the root)
When I delete an individual I would prefer it to stay with the family name I was working on.
Is there a way to allow this to happen

Re: GRO Birth Indexes and how to Cite against Birth Fact
On Ancestry I get the birth registration details shown in a few rows. Like Name year and Q Registration District name Vol and Page I then use a snip tool to copy the area with all the details. Once done I paste it as a media next to the persons birth date. Doing it this way gives the GRO details nex...

Re: Entering St. in a Name
I always use the form Ann (Smith) that shows I don't know her maiden name.
When the maiden name turns out to be the same as the married name I add her father's name (if I know it)

Re: Additional Information
All my images are kept separate from FH in folders under the persons name. e.g. I have a folder called Markham with sub folders for my name and my siblings. the relevant image is stored in the right folder. It is then copied into FH and media file (as described above)

Re: Stop saying "was" for people still alive!
Mike I haven't come across this myself. I merely replied to make a comment on what was being discussed in saying that a child 'is' always that of the parents whether alive or dead. The discussion was about using the word 'was' and I simply just commented on this to clarify 'is' and 'was' and not bec...

Re: Stop saying "was" for people still alive!
Just adding a little comment to this
The use of the word 'was' should not apply whether the child was a live or dead.
The child will always be the child of the couple so will always remain 'is' whether it is alive or dead

Re: Recording a Certificate with incorrect information
My father's marriage certificate for his first marriage listed his father as Thomas instead of George I ignored that detail and put George as the father's name and added a note about the incorrect name. His first wife's father's name was Thomas. That may be where the register may have misunderstood ...

Mike After I posted my message I went to the MS site. Re: Backup files
I often open Word docs by simply clicking the ikon in the folder. But when it opens it ends up with a temporary number in a temporary file and 'Read only' which is annoying I have since put the cursor over the Word doc right click to open a menu and picked Word 2016. That opens the document how I wa...

FTM 2014/2017 Updates
I made a cardinal error in upgrading FTM to version 2014.1 It was a free upgrade but paid to have the DVD delivered. A few days later I learned that version 2017 was being released. This is by the new owners of FTM. FTM 2014.1 (an earlier versions) will lose the Ancestry link. This is copied from an...

I have just had a quick check on V5 and V6 books and the chapters mentioned by Mike I have not read both just had a glance through them. They are not exactly the same there are changes in the respective chapters. One needs to look at them both in more details to see what the differences are. I haven...
