Re: Data source
I would say that you should not add speculative people to your main FH project at all. Keep your main project for people that you can prove belong to that tree. How about creating additional projects for speculative people? If they subsequently become proved you can either add them manually to your ...

Re: Backup & Restore - not a new database
I too vote for syncronising via the Cloud. Simple, easy and fully automatic so long that the computer you are updating has an internet connection. I have used Dropbox for many years with no issues at all. No need to use manual methods such as Backup and Restore, except it's a good idea to use Backup...

Re: Showing all ancesters in the diagram window
My suggestion of manually using Lock Window is the method I use occasionally because I don't want diagrams to be locked all the time.

Re: Showing all ancesters in the diagram window
First of all, don't re-enter people because that will create duplicate people. What I would do in your situation would be to create an Ancestor and Descendant Diagram for the person that you are working on, add more people using the click and drag method, lock that diagram by right clicking that dia...

Re: Showing all ancesters in the diagram window
An easier method is to add people in the diagram itself. From the person you are working from, click his/her box, click and drag upwards at which you are asked to Add Father or Add Mother. Similarly click and drag sideways to Add Spouse. Click and drag downwards to Add Son or Add Daughter. The added...

Re: Adding tabs to property box
Rather than adding new tabs to the property box you should consider adding more fields to the Main tab of the property box by clicking the property box Menu (the gear icon) and Customise Property Box.

Re: Temporary lists of Names
I use the In Progress flag for any person that is not absolutely proven to belong to a tree. The In Progress flag box is customised to show a heavy dotted outline, and the men at work icon clearly indicates work in progress. Use the Has Flag query to create a table of people that are in progress.

Re: Custom Views Suggestions
Screenshot showing how I work. I don't use the source pane in FH because the linked images indicated by the icons in the diagram are original source images that contain the information.

Re: Extra Windows
I work 95% of the time in an Ancestor and Descendant Diagram that shows the family that I am working on. That diagram may or may not include the root person. The information displayed in the diagram boxes together with a customised property box displays all of the information that I need to build or...

Yes, Family Historian does support PDF source files. I use JPG To PDF frequently to do exactly what you want to achieve with multiple paged wills.

Only record the birth name. If a female subsequently married the change of name is imputed by the marriage record in Family Historian.

Re: Export only DNA linked relatives
I find that FTDNA and FamilySearch ignore baptism and burial dates and places in uploaded GEDCOMs. My trees there therefore show blank information for the people affected. Both organisations expect users to have birth and death dates and places for people which is often impossible for English relati...

Re: Missing licence name from "Don't Lose this Key" card?
It is correct that the retail packs cannot include the name of the purchaser because they are sealed packs. It sounds like David has an incomplete registration key piece of paper in his pack in which case he needs to contact his retailer for advice. EDIT: on re-reading the original post David may al...

I would suggest that you search the whole of your computer for GEDCOM files in case there is one that would be useful in a location that you have not looked in before. Simply click your Start button, type *.ged, and click Search or press Enter. It would also be useful if you switch on your Windows f...

Starting afresh with v5.0
I would suggest that you maintain a single project containing everyone unless you have an extremely good reason to split. Much less hassle in the long run and virtually no disadvantages.

Multimedia Records - Link/Note
In later versions of GC and in Ancestral Sources the link/notes are always created. I have been using Gedcom Census v6.0.6 for some time, and am now playing with Ancestral Sources v1.1.0 to see if I like it. I do not use Link/Notes and was therefore surprised to encounter them for the first time us...

Ahnentafel Numbers
Suzanne, Go to Diagram Options, Text tab, and pick the scheme that includes Ahnentafel Numbers. Using that information I have tweaked the Name field for my favourite text scheme to ... %INDI.NAME:FULL% [=AhnentafelNumber([''],%INDI%,1)] ... which displays for example as Joe BLOGGS [120]. The ahnenta...
