Re: File > Merge/Compare File... crashing Family Historian
I too experienced a repeatable crash when merging two large GEDCOMs yesterday. The merge worked however after creating a new GEDCOM by selecting a subset of recently updated individuals from the second GEDCOM.

Re: Direct ancestors only
I would not use queries or plugins for this kind of task. I would create an Ancestor Diagram from yourself. The diagram boxes would display birth, baptism, marriage, death and burial dates and places. Icons beneath the boxes would indicate if I have linked in the source images of this information an...

Re: Named lists window?
The Focus window is always the first item in the Navigation Bar on the left.
I would add the 14 people to a Named List. Then as you finish investigating each person in turn, use the Delete key on your keyboard to delete them from the Named List.

Re: Coroner/Inquest
Assuming that you will have documents that include all of the detail, I would simply link images of those documents into Family Historian. When you wish to read some of that detail, use the Open In Editor/Player in FH to view the relevant image. No need to spend lots of time transcribing text into F...

Re: How to correctly record date and place from BMD Index entries
Mike, visit http://maps.familysearch.org, search for Sudbury, click Sudbury Civil Registration District. The result is I think self explanatory, spanning the counties of Suffolk and Essex. Note, the title says "England & Wales Jurisdictions 1851". This fantastic facility provided free by FamilySearc...

Re: How to correctly record date and place from BMD Index entries
I would use Q1 1899 in the Birth date field and Bingham registration district in the Birth place field. That's it. Simple, quick, easy to understand and accurate. I see no need to use abbreviations in this world of ultra cheap unlimited digital storage. When we are gone the viewer may not be familia...

How about copying one of the place study projects to a new project named Empty Project Template or something similar. Delete all of the people but preserve all of your sources and customisations. Then in future use this Empty project as the basis for future place study projects.

Re: Reliance on subscription sites FMP, Ancestry etc.
@Baboon281, it would not have been FreeBMD as in http://www.freebmd.org.uk where you found the date 4th May 1874 or the parish register marriage image. There are no exact dates or parish register marriage images on FreeBMD.

Re: Reliance on subscription sites FMP, Ancestry etc.
To be pedantic, a marriage from a parish register would be a marriage image, not a marraige certificate. To make Findmypast and Ancestry more affordable, watch out for special offers and discounts. Findmypast was recently available for £1 for three months I think. Ancestry recently offered a 50% dis...

Re: Married Name
The convention is not to record married surnames, because the change of surname for females is implied when the marriage takes place. I suppose there are exceptions to this rule in countries where the maiden surname is used as the last forename upon marriage.

Re: Reliance on subscription sites FMP, Ancestry etc.
There are no transcriptions of BMD certificates provided by Findmypast or Ancestry or FreeBMD. You only get searchable transcriptions and images of the BMD indexes . I have a complete collection of BMD (birth marriage and death) certificates for my ancestors back to 1837 which is when those certific...

When you have found the duplicates and reduced them down to one record, click the All tab in the Property Box, right click your name, and click Add Name. In diagrams it will show the main version of your name and the alternatives as aka (also known as).

I would say that the solution is not to hide the truth. Divorced parents are still blood relatives of their children no matter what happened to their relationship after the birth of the children.

You may find it easier to access the correct Property Box by double clicking the person in a diagram. That's what i do 98% of the time. I rarely use the Focus window.

Double click each media thumbnail, and ensure that you have entered a date/year in the top right box. When you have done that the media should appear in date order when you next open the property box for that person.

The first thing to do is to organise automatic backups of your FH data (set FH to automatically Save to every minute) and customisations to the cloud using a service such as Dropbox.
