Census - finding enumeration district
I've used Charles Booth's poverty map of London successfully to locate streets - it's 1898/9, and you can compare it with a modern map.
Wish he'd done the whole country!

We will crack this! Yes, I have 'protected mode' on. I've just gone through the procedure and written everything down: In Ancestry when you have your census page (or whatever) click Save (on the right under the blue bar) In Save Options, select Save to your computer and click OK In Save As give it a...

To move the file, right-click on it in the Virtual folder and select Copy, then open the folder where you want it to go, right-click on an empty space and click Paste.

This is very annoying! What you need to do is say Yes when Vista asks you whether you want to open the 'virtual' folder, and then copy the saved page to your family history folder - the one that FH recognises. Then delete it from the virtual folder. If you're doing lots at once it's not quite so bad...

Multiple Marriages between two families.
When you click to add a new spouse, you get asked whether you want to create a new record or link to an existing one. So you enter one family first without any marriages, and when you enter the second family, for each of the 3 siblings make sure you click 'link to an existing record' for the spouse ...

I would think 'folder books' - ie 'book folder' for the two younger lads - that was a job in printing.

My ex-husband was born in Oxford because his mother had been evacuated there from London when the Blitz started...however, she wasn't happy away from John's dad so she moved back again after John was born, taking him with her. They had no other children so can't answer the second half of that questi...

Hi Peter - it's me again - a slow day at work today! Your parents were married in Croydon in Oct-Dec quarter, 1932. Reference is 2a 917. Your own birth certificate reference is Jan-Mar quarter, Surrey Mid-E, 2a 335. Your father is trickier as he has a less unusual name. There was a Charles Henry Ste...

...and, while we're at it, a Hilda Grace Holberry was born in Croydon in 1907 - birth registered July-Sept quarter, vol 2a p 258. I found the death details on ancestry.co.uk which costs money (but I have a subscription). The birth was on freebmd.org.uk, which is a free site - although there are gaps...

I have a similar note on the death certificate of my great-uncle, who committed suicide (although the certificate doesn't mention this - the Cause of Death box is blank). It's a Scottish certificate.

Chelsea Pensioners
The Royal Chelsea Hospital itself has an archive, but it doesn't seem to be online...there's an email form on the website though, http://www.chelsea-pensioners.co.uk, which you can fill in asking for information. My long-lost cousin did that to find out about our mutual gg-grandfather.

Marriages are indexed under both parties' names...the wife's is her maiden name. It's easier if you look up the more uncommon name first, make a note of the date, district, volume and page numbers, and then look up the other spouse to see if the numbers match. Having said that...I have found a Willi...

Hi Simon: this happens with both Ancestors and Descendants narrative reports...somehow it puts itself into a template with headers and footers in a paler font.
