Gedcom Census - 1911 (and others) - Suggestions

My 5d worth 1) I just record this at present on source text. Maybe it could be added as personal note. 2) Probably best left to individual to record as they like. I agrree with Jon - KIS. 3) That sounds reasonable idea. I've not bothered with it as many addresses I have are just villages. 4) So far,...

Cine

My thought would be to make a written commentary/script for the film, giving information as to when and where it was taken plus make notes of times when people, pets, places are on screen. Then whoever is watching can view it without interruption, but has notes there if they want to find out more.

married at 15?

Remember also that the enumerators in the 1841 census were supposed to round down ages over 15 to nearest 5 below - although not all did - so he could have been between 35 and 39 at that time, making him possibly 19 at time of his marriage.

details on census returns

I only ever enter a single birth event for any individual. I base it, where possible, on census information and try to find confirmation in the GRO indices and/or parish baptismal records. All of the census events have source text and linked images so I can see how I have drawn my conclusions. If ne...

details on census returns

The auto-source is just a useful tool to help you record a transcription of the census. Most of the time you will need to modify some of its suggestions to match what is recorded on the enumerators form. Whether you make separate birth events if the information recorded differs from that which you h...

reference code

Yes. If you are using default settings and recording method 1, the reference is recorded in the title of the Source that GC creates. So it's simply a matter of finding that source in FH and editing its title. You can either go direct to the source from the records window if you know what it's called...

Testing New Version of Gedcom Census

I should have some time over next week to help out, Nick. I know I have a pile of census records to enter.

Residence to Co-residence

Possibly the best way would be to Copy and Paste the Individual Attribute from Spouse-1 to Spouse-2, altering dates if necessary. If you wanted to emphasise that they lived there together, add a note to that affect.

Making a fact always appear last in reports

A simple work round would be to give it a date of 2010 or similar; then it would always come last in the list. You would probably want to alter the sentence for the event using the work with fact sets dialogue so that date didn't appear in the report.

Mother's name on child's birth certificate

I've found one of mine where it's the woman's second marriage. So I reckon yours should read X McSweeney late Wilshere formerly French. But it would depend on what the registrar was told; so it might say McSweeney formerly French or even McSweeney formerly Wilshere!! Look on GENUKI for Barbara Dixon...

The Guardian Guide to Family History

When I was given the task by the family of sorting out our family tree I was new to both genealogy and computing, so I needed software that was easy to use. And here it is. The tutorials in the manual make it easy to take your first steps in the program using fictional data so you don't mess yours u...

Illegitimate birth certifcate 1 day before wedding

If the child was born out of wedlock, the father's name could only be entered on the certificate if both he & the mother were present at the registration. Then the son could have been legitimately used either surname. So having no father mentioned doesn't prove whether James was the father or not! I...

Family Mystery

I'm struggling to find any figures, David, but I think impossible is the word. More so than today even without Legal Aid. Lawyers who practised divorce law were only in big cities, so travel expenses would have been another burden apart from the apprehension of going out of the local area! Also the ...

Family Mystery

I wonder if William walked out for whatever reason abandoning Catherine & her young family. She met up with George. I think I'm right in saying if William couldn't be found after 7 years he could be presumed dead so Catherine married George. Doesn't explain the age discrepancies though. Divorce woul...

Birth Certificate

I would have thought that a birth in a workhouse have been registered, and that application for a bastardy order would have been made by the Board of Guardians to get the putative father to cough up some money to pay for the child's upbringing. These may survive in the local record office - worth ha...

Stillbirths

I know this is a back to front way of doing it, but if you are convinced these children died young, how about looking for burials, although I believe a death certificate would have been necessary, it could have been badly indexed or under mother's maiden name etc. Or if you know where they would hav...

Aprox date doesn't always mean approx year

Good point Chris. This could also apply if you know relative's year of birth and have been told that birthday was 'near Aunt Sarah's' which you know. Maybe the answer is another qualifier, say 'about', which could be used if year is certain, but month and/or date isn't. Of course then there's the op...
