What did they find difficult for beginners? Insert your first individual, open an All Relatives diagram and just keep dragging and adding, what could be easier? Interesting that it's only right at the bottom of the article that it points out how far from GEDCOM compatible the other programs are, des...

Can anyone decipher this occupation from the 1851 census? The first part is 'Wife of do. &' (do. being Labourer and Thatcher) but I cannot work out the second part. I think it is something like 'Dame's School' but this doesn't make sense. http://www.fhug.org.uk/images/uploads/ElizabethFagg.jpg The e...

Can anyone decipher the occupation for Mary Spencer in 1841 and do you have any idea what it means? I think it says LS or maybe FS and it appears against several others on the page. It is always against women not men. http://www.fhug.org.uk/images/uploads/MarySpencer1841.jpg The full reference in ...

Families split across census pages
Thanks all for the confirmations that what I was doing made sense.
I also have the case with two families on the same sheet so I need to look how I have handled that; I think I have used two sources.

Families split across census pages
I often get a case where the head of household is at the bottom of one page and some of the family are on the top of the next page. Currently I use the reference number from the page with the head of household, add all family members and link both images in GEDCOM Census using one source per census ...

My great grandfather Nelson Brown was also illegitimate and his birth certificate shows only his mother. His two marriage certificates show John Brown as his father but this was made up to make him look more respectable (to his brides' families?). His first marriage certificate gave John Brown an oc...

The main where born column already says Bethnal Green London. The transcriber (presumably from the LDS transcription) also made this out as Bethnal Green, although they also thought it said Middlesex at the end! I don't see why there would be an additional Sq after London so I feel it is part of the...

Optional Root Siblings on Hour Glass Diagram
The Hourglass (Ancestors and Descendants) Diagram includes the siblings of the root, making it more of an Hourglass with belt. Can you add a selection in Diagram Options for this type of diagram to turn root siblings on or off. The default should be on for compatibility with the existing FH function...

Bug in the forum software?
I also suspect it's to do with browser/forum. I have found short postings are normally ok, but long ones tend to be lost either if you go edit or back from Preview. I normally write my postings in an Outlook message first so I can spell check them before posting, then cut and paste them in. If I the...

Marital status on census
When using the census as a source for a death event I change the certainty assessment from Primary Evidence to Questionable. It doesn't prove their death. I have at least one bigamous ancestor where his first wife records herself as a widow when he is living with a second wife ten miles away.

If you click on Help at the top of Ancestry then select the email Ancestry Support tab you can send this back to them. I have reported bugs before and they have usually been quite helpful. I think they come back within about 24 or 48 hours.

Fixed, thanks. I'm glad I put in a big enough screen shot so you could see the reference numbers for the source and object. For anyone else doing this, there is a small thing to watch out for in Word. I cut and pasted the 0 @S137@ SOUR string from FHUG into the Word Find dialog but it reported it co...

I forgot to add an image to one source, then went back and used the Attach Images to Existing Sources Tool. This creates a blank Link/Note and if I try and edit this it doesn't appear the same as Link/Notes created at the same time as the source. Is there a workaround to fix this? In the image bel...

Thanks Nick. I decided I would look at this with an open mind and following the advice from Microsoft on the first link in your reply, I ran the ClearType tuner. I found no difference so I turned it off. I notice the vast majority of comments on the Microsoft web site don't seem to like it. For an...

I only installed it because I was fed up with auto update nagging me and shut down telling me it was going to install unless I clicked on a special link. As this meant one of my kids was bound to install by accident when they shut down I decided to bow to the inevitable. When I installed, it asked s...

I would be interested to know what is the oldest age of a mother anyone has found in the 19th century or earlier where they have reasonable confidence in the sources. I have found multiple great grandmothers who appear to have had children up to about 45 or 46. I previously had received information ...

I agree I need to put countries in, I have relatives in both London and Bradford (both in Ontario, Canada not England). It was a left over from my early days of entering data when I hadn't thought about how my data could be interpreted by others. It now ranks along with changing over to one source p...

I use the county name at the time of the event so I have a relative born in Wordsley, Staffordshire but her children were born in Wordsley, West Midlands. Although London is a pain with paces swapping in and out of Middlesex, London, Surrey and Essex at various censuses. Another scenario is where th...

Genetic Distance (for discussion)

Although my wife doesnt feel any great link to her distant cousin, they do have a common ancestry and it is nice to know how close ...
